1. Mentoring: Being the help you wish you'd had / Jo Franchetti / ffconf 2018 - YouTube
**Note** sound quality is bad for the first 90 seconds, and resolves thereafter. The tech industry is suffering; from bad role models and unrealistic expectations, from anxiety and impostor syndrome and from a lack of diversity, empathy and ethical consideration. Everyone, no matter how junior, can mentor and be a hero for someone else, for the industry and for yourself.

A comparison of alien invasion movies from two very different cultures. Get started with a 30-day Audible trial when you go to https://www.audible.com/lindsayellis or text lindsayellis to 500500 and LISTEN for a change. This is an idea I stole from Dan Olson of Folding Ideas - in effect, this is a remake of a video I did five years ago that hasn’t been online for a while, like a second edition, an updated version of a textbook. There was a lot there that I felt was worthy of revisiting, and more still that I wanted to add. Some of the bones are still there, but this version is much more streamlined and heavier researched, and the irrelevant excess has been cut. Sounds of Mars: NASA’s InSight Senses Martian Wind - YouTube
Listen to Martian wind blow across NASA’s InSight lander. The spacecraft’s seismometer and air pressure sensor picked up vibrations from 10-15 mph (16-24 kph) winds as they blew across Mars’ Elysium Planitia on Dec. 1, 2018. The seismometer readings are in the range of human hearing, but are nearly all bass and difficult to hear on laptop speakers and mobile devices. We provide the original audio and a version pitched up by two octaves to make them audible on mobile devices. Playback is suggested on a sound system with a subwoofer or through headphones. Readings from the air pressure sensor have been sped up by a factor of 100 times to make them audible. Music Software & Bad Interface Design: Avid’s Sibelius - YouTube
In this video, I take a detailed look at the design of Avid's Sibelius - a popular music notation application. Sibelius is the embodiment of what not to do as a user experience designer and this video covers a range of examples of inappropriate design patterns and bad user interface choices. Then I go insane. Shut up about diversity – Dora Militaru – Medium
My local web performance community group hosted a Christmas event. I offered the following lightning talk: I can remember three times I felt particularly wimpy in 2017. Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration coincided roughly with my birthday.

Vuex Explained Visually – Vue Mastery – Medium
Managing state in an application full of components can be difficult. Facebook discovered this the hard way and created the Flux pattern, which is what Vuex is based upon. Vuex is Vue’s own state management pattern and library.

For the Love of Lichen - YouTube
"In his home in rural Montana, photographer and biologist Tim Wheeler (http://timwheelerphotography.com ) has lined the walls of his living room with shelf after shelf of lichen specimens. He has gathered these samples from his journeys and he meticulous curates his collection, finding only the most photogenic or unique specimens to profile. Using stacked macro photography, his portraits of lichen transform these dull and ubiquitous organisms into marvels of evolution and vibrant landscapes."

A Metropolis of 200 Million Termite Mounds Was Hidden in Plain Sight | MetaFilter
Termite mounds that are still in use despite being almost 4,000 years old are spread over an area the size of Britain in a remote Brazilian forest. In the course of digging tunnels over thousands of years, "the termites moved more than 10 cubic kilometers (that's more than 2.6 trillion U.S. gallons) of earth," and the entomologists investigating them took soil samples that "indicated mound fill dates between 690 to 3820 years ago."
