Untold AI: Tone over time
"When we begin to look at AI stories over time, as we did in the prior post and will continue in this one, one of the basic changes we can track is how the stories seem to want us to feel about AI, or their tone. Are they more positive about AI, more negative, or neutral/balanced?"

Ron Cobb’s Semiotic Standards for Alien
"a series of signs designed by the graphic artist Ron Cobb (although this sheet is a digitised version based on his hand drawn originals). Ron Cobb was the man responsible for imagining and designing all the human technology in the first and second Alien films. HR Giger of course was famously responsible for the monster itself, and Ridley Scott apparently kept the two men apart so that their particular visions would not become compromised or tainted by the others ideas…

These signs were intended for “all commercial trans-stellar and heavy element transport craft” and are wonderful examples of graphic design. Conceived when the film was in pre-production sometime during the mid/ late 1970’s, they have a graphic simplicity and an almost contemporary feel that would not look out of place in todays CGI-tastic adventures."

How Matte Painting Expanded the Star Wars Universe
Long before computer generated effects dominated science fiction, matte paintings were the go-to aesthetic tool in creating evocative outer space environments. A long used technique in classic Hollywood for films that couldn’t afford on-location shoots or in situations that defied the production limits of the pre-digital world, matte painting was often deployed in conjunction with live-action shots. The aim was to create a seamless blend between the real and imagined world being created for the cameras.

Joel & Ethan Coen - Shot | Reverse Shot on Vimeo
How do you film a conversation? Most likely, you’re going to block the actors, set up the camera, and do shot/reverse shot. But where do you put the camera? What lens do you use? And how do you cut back and forth? Today, I consider the Coen brothers — Joel & Ethan — and see how these choices lend a particular feel to their version of shot/reverse shot.
