Designing a Data Visualization Dashboard Like It was a Game
"Here, I’ll focus in on specific attributes of charts and analytical applications that, if viewed as game elements, could enable new approaches for how to design, navigate and manipulate analytical applications such as data dashboards. Some of the mechanics I think are most adaptable from the discourse of games into the discourse of data visualization are: maps, items, crafting and guild halls."

What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Data Visualization
"Games can provide a useful metaphor for how to deal with some of the challenges of making effective data visualization products. But to understand how game concepts can improve data visualization, we need to better understand the structure of games and identify those kinds of games which most relate to the exploratory data visualization experience."

Standard Patterns in Choice-Based Games
"When I was analysing the structures of CYOA works a few years back, I began to recognise some strong recurring design patterns. I came up with some home-brewed terminology, but didn't ever lay it out in a nice clear way. This is a non-exhaustive look at some of the more common approaches"

Procedural sprite generation.
"On November 19, 2016 in San Francisco, CA the first annual Gen Jam (procedural generation jam) was hosted at the awesome indie co-working space GameNest. The idea was to spend a Saturday creating an art generator, a "thing that makes a thing" if you will.

I created a thing that made character sprites in the amazing style of Christopher "Oryx" Barrett's awesome Oryx Design Lab 16-bit Sprite Set."

Game Theory Is Really Counterintuitive
Every now and then, I hear someone say that game theory doesn't tell us anything we don't already know. In a sense, they are right---game theory is a methodology, so it's not really telling us anything that our assumptions are not. However, I challenge someone to tell me that they would have believed most of…

Game Mechanic Explorer
A collection of concrete examples for various game mechanics, algorithms, and effects. The examples are all implemented in JavaScript using the Phaser game framework, but the concepts and methods are general and can be adapted to any engine. Think of it as pseudocode. Each section contains several different examples that progress in sequence from a very basic implementation to a more advanced implementation.
