Why GOV.UK content should be published in HTML and not PDF
"Compared with HTML content, information published in a PDF is harder to find, use and maintain. More importantly, unless created with sufficient care PDFs can often be bad for accessibility and rarely comply with open standards."

Tymly
"Tymly offers a standards-based vocabulary capable of describing any digital service. This language enables teams to share, collaborate and publish common IT goals – helping improve interoperability and reduce duplication of effort. Even better, using modern open source technology, Tymly can turn these “blueprints” back into cutting-edge digital services!"

Designing digital services that are accountable, understood, and trusted
"I’m hoping to convince you that designing digital services that are understandable, accountable and trusted is now a commercial as well as a moral imperative, and that building an open society in the digital age is about more than open code.

And that, whether you like it or not, if you work in software or design in 2016 you also work in politics."

How we approached service mapping
"We realised that one of the most important stages of building step by step navigation is mapping a user’s journey through a service. This enables us to understand the journey in as much detail as possible, including the different routes a user can take. It allows us to identify the parts of the journey the step by step navigation should cover and the content we should include."

If I could tell you 3 things – notes from a brief career in the public service
1. Your organisation will benefit more from you being user centred than the users ever will.
2. Orient everything you can in your organisation around real user journeys.
3. Seek the truth, even if it’s ugly

How to create a borderless state. Lessons from Estonia.
"Around 17 years ago, Estonia set out to fundamentally rewrite how a government should deliver services and it’s now considered the most advanced digital government in the world. At the end of last year, four FutureGovers took a trip to Tallinn to learn more about its approach."

Network principles
"Government networks form a platform that enables the delivery of digital services. Good network design should create a user experience that the network is transparent, resilient and ubiquitous, with the right balance of quality, speed, security, control and cost.

These principles help designers deliver this experience for their users when designing networks across government. Note that these are principles, not a set of rules that must be arbitrarily followed. Designers can deviate from them where there is good justification."

How designers prototype at GDS
We believe in designing in the open. Most of the ideas on this blog will be iterated on over time, some of them will test badly and never make it onto GOV.UK, a few might end up being patterns that we use everywhere.

Some interesting things about how we do content design
"We don’t just write the content for GOV.UK – we design it. This sounds simple, but they’re fundamental to the way we work: understanding user needs, designing content that meets those needs, and iterating to improve it in response to user feedback."
