Michael Tsai - Blog - Catalina “softwareupdate” Can Download Old Installers
(Perhaps this could be useful for building VMs or the like?)

“The softwareupdate command has gained a new option in Catalina:

% softwareupdate –fetch-full-installer

“Will download the latest ‘Install macOS’ application to this Mac’s /Applications folder. This is extremely useful for many admin tasks.

“The –fetch-full-installer flag has a sub-flag: –full-installer-version which allows you to download a specific version.

% softwareupdate –fetch-full-installer –full-installer-version 10.14.6

The Taste of Disillusionment | The Clean Platter
Oh no—it looks like Alton Brown might be homophobic and racist.

“‘I don’t trust you,’ Alton said, to laughter. ‘Where’s your dad?’

“The girl passed her microphone to the man next to her. ‘Sure, she eats well!’ he said.

“Alton nodded. Then he said, ‘No, I don’t trust you either, Dad. Where’s the girl’s mother?’ Again, laughter.

9Alton couldn’t find the girl’s mom. About ten awkward forever-seconds went by.

“‘Man,’ said Alton to the girl, ‘If that guy next to you is your other daddy, I’m in the wrong state.’

“Again the crowd went really quiet, but up in the balcony, I’m pretty sure Beth and I gasped.”

Yolian Ogbu on Twitter: "THINGS TO DO INSTEAD OF CALLING THE COPS (thread) *strong communities make police obsolete" / Twitter
“THINGS TO DO INSTEAD OF CALLING THE COPS
“(thread)

“*strong communities make police obsolete

“1) Don’t feel obligated to defend property–especially corporate ‘private’property. Before confronting someone or contacting the police, ask yourself if anyone is being hurt or endangered by property ’theft’ or damage. If the answer is ‘no’, then let it be

“2) If something of yours is stolen and you need to file a report, consider going to the police station instead of bringing cops into your community. You may inadvertently put someone in your neighborhood at risk

“3) If you see someone pulled over with car trouble, stop and ask if they need help of if you can call a tow truck for them. Police may give punitive and unnecessary tickets to people with car issues, target those without papers, or worse

“4) Keep a contact list of community resources like suicide hotlines. When police are contacted to ‘manage’ such situations, people with mental illness are 16 times more likely to be killed by cops than those without mental health challenges

“5) Check your impulse to call the police on someone ‘suspicious’. Is their race, gender, ethnicity, class, or housing situation influencing your choice? Such calls can be death sentences for many people

macos - QuickLookSatellite MAC OS, High CPU Use - Super User
This post has some handy ideas about how you may be able to track down why ExternalQuickLookSatellite may be using lots of CPU.

“Troubleshooting steps:

“• See if there are any relevant log messages in Console.app or /var/log/system.log.

“• Use qlmanage -r to reset Quick Look client’s generator cache.

“• Run sudo opensnoop -n QuickLookSatellite-general to see if the process hangs after accessing some specific files. Or select QuickLookSatellite-general in Activity Monitor, press command-I, and see the Open Files and Ports tab.
“Temporarily delete Movie.qlgenerator, Audio.qlgenerator, or other qlgenerator bundles in

“• /System/Library/QuickLook, and run qlmanage -r.
“Temporarily remove applications shown by qlmanage -p | grep /Applications/.
“Disable quicklookd with launchctl unload

vnc - How to prevent RealVNC from scaling the display based on windows scaling option? - Super User
“I had about the same problem you are facing. I am using a laptop and an external monitor. Since the laptop screen is small and high-res, I use the windows scaling option only on it. But RealVNC applies this ‘correction’ even when using the external monitor. If I set it up to 100% scaling (session resolution being the same as monitor resolution), the screen is not filled, and if I let automatic scaling, then the screen is all blurred.

“Anyhow, I tried TightVNC and it does the same thing as RealVNC. The only client I found to work was TigerVNC.”

YSK asking "How are you feeling?" is a much more open-ended question that's not as accusatory or intimidating as "What's wrong?" : YouShouldKnow
“YSK asking ‘How are you feeling?’ is a much more open-ended question that's not as accusatory or intimidating as "What's wrong?"

“When you ask someone ‘what's wrong?’ it puts them in a position that doesn't encourage conversation or doesn't encourage honesty. It gives them an easy position to say "Nothing" or to shrug you off.

“Meanwhile, asking someone ‘how are you feeling?’ will be much more open-ended, is more welcoming, caring and much more likely to lead to an honest answer.

Where you allow your lines to break in a block of text can be very important for readability, and quite tricky within a fluid layout. Latest macOS 10.14 Mojave freezing 1-2 seconds every few minutes (except mouse and sound) and then continues? - Ask Different
(There isn’t much in the way of replies here, but at least it’s not just you.)

“Since a week or two I am experiencing a very strange problem on my Macbook Pro running macOS 10.14 Mojave. I have all the latest updates installed (currently no new updates available).

“No matter what I’m doing, typing something in a browser or text editor or other application, watching a video on youtube or in VLC, every few minutes the whole system become non-responsive for like 1 or 2 seconds.

“No response to keyboard activity, video playback stops, mouse clicks don’t work. However if any sound is playing, that keeps on playing normally. And the mouse pointer still moves. When I was typing something, the letters don’t appear, but after 1-2 sec when the system continues, the letters still appear as if they were cached somehow.

“So when I’m watching a video (either streaming or just a local video file with VLC) the screen will suddenly stop i.e. the video picture appears ‘frozen’, but the sound continues. Then 1-2 sec later the video continues normally.”

How to Limit Automations to Once-Per-Period-Of-Time? (when the start-time for the period is dynamic; i.e. based on an event) - Piston: Design Help - webCoRE Community Forum
Perhaps this technique may be worth a look if you should need to have a piston do something only once within a given X-minute period?

“I’ll chime in. This mechanism is fairly tried and true (and I guess simple is better and thus more reliable).

“You can do everything in the main piston. Take a look at my example below. If the conditions are right, then the piston will run and then it will set a variable equal to the next time in the future it is allowed to run again.”

iOS 13 Makes It Easier to Disable Content Blockers for Specific Websites in Safari « iOS & iPhone :: Gadget Hacks
“To do it, tap the "AA" button on the left side of the search bar. Next, tap "Turn off Content Blockers" to quickly disable all content blockers you have on your iOS device for the website at hand. (Previous versions of Safari had the feature by long-pressing the refresh button and hitting "Reload Without Content Blockers.)

“Likewise, if a site you usually allow ads for has a buggy section that prevents you from seeing the main content, you can tap the "AA" button and hit "Turn on Content Blockers." That way, you're still supporting the site on follow-up visits. (Older versions of Safari only supported turning off ads, not on, via the shortcut.)

“The second method is the one you most likely want to know about, where you'll disable the content blocker for all webpages on that domain until you manually disable the setting. Whether you reload the same webpage or visit another on that domain, your content blocker will stop working. In the "AA" menu, tap "Website Settings," then ensure "Use Content Blockers" is disabled.”

EU brings in 'right to repair' rules for appliances - BBC News
“Under the European Commission's new standards, manufacturers will have to make spares, such as door gaskets and thermostats, available to professional repairers.

“These parts will have to be accessible with commonly-available tools and without damaging the product.

“Campaigners say individual consumers should also be allowed to buy spares and mend their own machines. But manufacturers said this would raise questions about risk and liability.
Instead, manufacturers will have to ensure that key parts of the product can be replaced by independent professionals.”

Anyone knows what is the thing behind the pin called? : EnglishLearning
Apparently the back part of an earring is called a “butterfly clutch”—who knew, eh?

“Butterfly clutch, but nobody calls it that in natural conversation, you would just call it the ‘back of the pin’”

AUKEY | USB-C Car Charger with Power Delivery | CC-Y7
This charger actually looks pretty decent on paper. It doesn’t seem to have a light, and it doesn’t sit flush with the outlet either.

SoundStage! Solo | SoundStageSolo.com - Eardrum Suck: The Mystery Solved!
“The Sony WH-H900Ns, which in my experience produce just a slight amount of eardrum suck, have a gentler filter slope. The NAD Viso HP70s, which for me produce no eardrum suck, focus a relatively modest amount of noise canceling within a narrow band.”

13 Features of iOS 13: Maps improvements - Six Colors
“My other favorite feature is the new Share ETA option, which officially arrives in iOS 13.1 at the end of the month. It’s one of those features that Apple does best, taking a common task—letting someone know when you’ll arrive somewhere—and making it simpler. You can tap the Share ETA button when you’re in driving directions and it will send an update via iMessage to the contact(s) of your choice, along with the ability for them to tap a link and follow you on your route. It’ll even send them a text when you’re getting close, which is particularly handy if you’re driving. (This feature works great on CarPlay, more on which in a future post.)”

“Not only is Share ETA a useful feature, but Apple does a good job of surfacing it in the Maps app, which means I’m hopeful people will actually find it and use it. In fact, when you set a location as a Favorite (more on which below), you can set it up to automatically share your ETA with someone every time you navigate to that location, if you always want your partner to know when, say, you’re coming home from work. I think it’s a great feature overall: I just hope it adds support for transit and walking in a future update.”
