How to create a macOS virtual machine in VmWare Fusion on Mac without a CD, USB drive or recovery partition
“If you own a Mac and a VmWare Fusion, then you can legally create macOS virtual machines. However it is surprisingly unintuitive if you don’t have a recovery partition (in which case you can just to Add > New > Install OS X from the recovery partition) or a media, that you can convert into bootable media and use in a new custom VmWare machine.

“This is a simple guide of installing macOS X into VmWare on macOS without a recovery partition or creating external bootable media.”

Master Zaps Zaptronic inZanity: Me on Hobbits and High Frame Rates
On why high-frame-rate movies look bad:
“This is a theory I believe more in myself. Because some thing I think I noticed in all the HFR examples I've seen (and that includes the HFR panel at SIGGRAPH 2012 where lots of different frame rates etc. was showcased - more on this at a later time) I notice one very peculiar effect: HFR makes you a worse actor!

“Yes, it is weird. Somehow, every mistake, and every nuance of movement is suddenly present, and you can tell the tiny fidgety moves people to. The theory is, that when we only "sample" the motion at 24 points every second, our brain fills in the intermediate movement with some ‘ideal’, but when we actually have the HFR information, no such ‘motion smoothing’ can occur in our brain, and we see the movements as jiggly and imprecise as they are, making them look more real but then also more like an actor acting.”

Compersion Is The Word You’ve Been Missing Your Whole Life
(This may be your new go-to webpage about compersion, especially since Wikipedia seems to have merged their “compersion” page with their “polyamory” page.)

“This word exists in other languages. ‘Mudita,’ in Sanskrit, means ‘the pleasure that comes from delighting in other people’s well-being.’ ‘Unne,’ in Norwegian means ‘to be happy on someone else’s behalf.’

“Although the English language doesn’t have an official word for it, there is a lesser-known term for this beautiful feeling: compersion.

“Compersion cannot be found in the dictionary, but Wikipedia defines it as ‘an empathetic state of happiness and joy experienced when another individual experiences happiness and joy.’”

Sorry, an error occurred while retrieving the piston data - Meta / Bug Reports - webCoRE Community Forum
[If you end up with a piston that won’t load, these steps may be worth a shot: Because this worked for you when you had a dead piston in July 2019.]

“1. This will only work if you have Automatic backup enabled.

“2. Go into the SmartThings IDE under My Location and go to List SmartApps.

“3. Find the title of your smart app/piston and click on the title. You should be taken to another window that contains details on your piston.

“4. Next find the section under Application State.you should the first three items in a list.
“Name Value
“active true
“author Author
“bin backup bin code

“5. The bin section will have your backup code.

“This will not fix your piston, but will let you use WebCoRE’s Restore a Piston Backup Code option and recreate the Piston throwing the error and not opening view/editing.

“I have done this for a piston or two that has been locked in limbo.

“If that works you can get rid of the bad piston and use the backup one you just created.”

IFTTT WebHook Instructions - Piston: Design Help - webCoRE Community Forum
On triggering a webCoRE piston from IFTTT:

“You have two ways:

“1. Direct piston execution - head over to the piston and that should give you a link in the Quick Facts section to execute it - that is the URL you need to use in the webhooks of IFTTT. You can also build a JSON body using ingredients and then access them in webCoRE via $args.param (param is the name you gave the parameter in that JSON body)

“2. Event-based IFTTT triggers - use an IF condition and select the IFTTT virtual device - fill in an event name of your choice and you will be provided the URL to use in the webhooks. Try and use unique event names so that you don’t get conflicting executions. You can also implement the JSON body method of passing parameters to webCoRE”

Lutron Caseta integration do I need a smart bridge? - Devices & Integrations - SmartThings Community
(On how to price things for selling online—such as SmartThings bits, in this case:)
“As far as fair pricing, a good rule of thumb is to find the item on Amazon, then go to Camel Camel Camel and look at the current ‘third-party used’ pricing.

“If your item is brand new in the box, the camel camel camel ‘third party used’ is a good place to start, although be aware that when buying from an individual community member people may expect the price to be about 25% below that number when buying from an unknown individual. If your item is actually used, the typical community sale price is about half of the ‘third-party used’ Camel Camel Camel price. Again, just because of the uncertainty in buying from an unknown individual. But you never know, everybody needs to set their prices individually.”

ASL is possible on Duolingo
“Free, American Sign Language resources outside of Duolingo:

“• SignSchool I have used and recommend this for brand new learners and up. It's currently in beta and free (might cost in the future). It's interactive and fun. Credentials

“• Sign Language Blitz.
Credentials: This resource was created by ASL Students, certified ASL Interpreters, and at least 1 Deaf person. (The lesson videos I just did today featured this person, named Gerald.) I'm not sure which regional dialect they are using. Gerald is from Philidelphia though. As someone from the Western United states, I recognized 95% of the signs he used in the lesson. The other 5% were intuitive enough that I could easily guess.

“LifePrint and its corresponding Youtube channel Bill Vicars Credentials. I have used and highly recommend LifePrint. It has some very good resources for brand new users and up. Kirkville - How to Use Time Machine Server in macOS High Sierra
“Some Mac users have long run Mac OS X Server on a computer in their household to use as a file sharing repository, and to centralized backups of other Macs. The Server software had a Time Machine server feature, which allowed you to designate a folder that other Macs could select to store Time Machine backups. This is especially useful if you have laptops that you don’t often connect to hard drives to back up; Time Machine can do this automatically, in the background, even at night.

“With macOS High Sierra, this feature is built into the operating system, and you no longer need to install and manage Server to use it. Here’s how.”

Mod-Tap keys register as tap when used too fast · Issue #2278 · qmk/qmk_firmware · GitHub
(On some QMK parameters related to mod_tap:)
“I have been adding unit tests for the tapping system and `PERMISSIVE_HOLD` should do what you want, as long as you don't have `IGNORE_MOD_TAP_INTERRUPT` defined. You can add a `#undef IGNORE_MOD_TAP_INTERRUPT` to you `config.h` file to make sure. Some keyboards define that by default.

“From my tests, the options mean the following

* `PERMISSIVE_HOLD` = Always the modified output
* `IGNORE_MOD_TAP_INTERRUPT` = Always both keys, unless you hold both keys for at least `TAPPING_TERM`
* `PERMISSIVE_HOLD + IGNORE_MOD_TAP_INTERRUPT` = Modified output if the other key is released before the tap key, or if both keys are held longer than `TAPPING_TERM`. So both keys are output when releasing the tap key before the other key and held less than `TAPPING_TERM`”

Too many dogs today, so here are munchkin cats. I want one! : cats
“I did some cursory online research but it seems like there is no evidence that munchkin cats have any more health problems than cats with normal length legs.

“Obviously these aren’t peer-reviewed scientific sources and could very well be biased, but all the top hits on Google agreed that munchkins don’t have issues. It did say that crossing two munchkins cats is a no-no, but you can get the trait by breeding one munchkin with one normal cat and you will get about a quarter with the munchkin trait and no higher incidence of health problems.

“Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munchkin_cat
“Source 2 http://www.critters360.com/index.php/munchkin-health-problems-lordosis-short-legged-cats-munchkin-breed-cat-health-16878/
“Source 3 http://www.munchkin.net/faq.html”

Also, in reply to a commenter who said, “This makes me so sad,” someone replied,
“You may be happy to realize that it's false. Munchkinism (for lack of a better term off-hand) is a dominant trait, inbreeding is not only not recommended, it's a big no-no. If you go Munchkin-Something Else, you'll get 25% Munchkins in the litter, and they don't have the vast issues that plague dachshunds because of the different bone-structures. Going Munchkin-Munchkin will give only slightly more than 25% Munchkin with many dead, so it's just not done by ethical breeders.”

audio - AirPods: Extremely poor mic quality on Mac - Ask Different
“Apple claims that the poor Mono 8kHz quality which affects recording and indeed simultaneously playback on Mac when the AirPod microphones are activated, is because the SCO codec then gets employed over the entire Mac audio system. This is supposedly ‘expected behaviour’ when trying to use the AirPods and other Bluetooth headsets together with a computer, according to Apple.

“The AAC codec is normally used when just listening to playback on the AirPods. It’s just very unfortunate that SCO – low-quality as it may be – upon AirPod microphone activation is not only limited to doing recording, but also displaces AAC and audio playback.

“Apple Support claims that Apple is looking at this issue, and that improvements might be coming in future firmware updates, but I did not interpret that as a promise to be honest. But for the time being, I’d say that the benefits of making calls and so forth with AirPods on Macs are quite limited.

“Current best practice is to use the Internal Microphone for Recording, and the AirPods for playback when conducting calls. Input and Output devices can be selected in System Settings > Sound or by ⌥-clicking the Volume icon in the macOS Menu Bar, and selecting devices there.”

JAWS 18.0.2945 Latest Update Plus What's New
(On JAWS’s new focus-hightlight jobbie:)
“The following is a list of improvements made between the JAWS 18 April 2017 release and the May 2017 update.

“Beginning with this update, JAWS now visually highlights text in Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 as you navigate using the Virtual Cursor. As JAWS reads, the current text being read is highlighted so a sighted user such as a parent, teacher, developer, or tester can easily follow the text visually. JAWS visual tracking is available in Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, PDF documents opened in Adobe Reader, and Microsoft Mail. It is enabled by default in these specific applications.

“Note that when navigating by line on pages in the web browser, JAWS highlights the virtual line and not the actual line as it appears on the web page.

“While the default settings for the highlight should work well for many users, you can also customize the appearance of the visual highlight including the color, style, transparency, thickness, and spacing. For example, the default color is Lime Green while the default style is Block, which places a solid rectangle around the highlighted text.

“However, you may prefer a different color, style, and more transparency for the highlight. To change these Settings, open Settings Center while focused in one of the supported applications, expand the new Visual Settings group, select Highlight Virtual PC Cursor, and then press F6 to move to the pane where you can configure visual tracking settings.”

“If you’re looking to do a heteronormative couple’s night and need to agree on a movie, it appears the best choice might be to pop in one of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies or ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ Apparently, both men and women are drawn to stories where an out-of-towner and a loyal lapdog team up to pass through a region of abnormally short residents on the advice of a magical entity and join a mission to solve a convoluted geopolitical struggle alongside an eclectic coterie of traveling companions — a stalwart guardian, an axe-toting hothead and an enigmatic denizen of the woods — in order to once again return to their bucolic existences.1

“That, or ‘The Princess Bride’ might be a good call. Great film.

“Still, there are differences in taste: Films in the men’s top 20 but not the women’s include ‘Pulp Fiction,’ ‘The Matrix,’ ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Goodfellas.’ Films disproportionately favored by women include ‘Dirty Dancing,’ the ‘Harry Potter’ series, ‘Pretty Woman,’ ‘Grease’ and ‘Titanic.’”

Launch Services database problems: correcting and rebuilding – The Eclectic Light Company
(If you find that “lsd” ends up using a lot of CPU, perhaps this may be worth a shot?)
“There is no simple way to rebuild your Launch Services database, unless you have a utility such as OnyX which includes this as a feature. Restarting in Safe mode (with the Shift key held) flushes quite a few caches, but does not touch the Launch Services database.”

[…]

“The snag with resetting the Launch Services database is that your Mac will take time to gradually rebuild it, during which its functions will run much slower. After a while, though, it will have been rebuilt, and the right app should be associated with each document type.

“Apple does not tell us which service maintains the Launch Services database, but I have a strong suspicion that it is lsd, or a close relative. It is not that important, as your only controls are in the lsregister command tool, which is limited in its powers.”

Chromecast and TiVo drops resolved : eero
“For the longest time (5 months), my Chromecasts have been dropping off randomly from the ‘castable’ devices list. Sometimes one of the three Chromecasts would be visible, other times all of them, etc.

“On top of that I’ve been having disconnect issues with my TiVO Mini being unable to talk to the main floor DVR, again randomly. This never happened with my old Asus router. After some serious debugging, I seem to have found the culprit. My switch. It’s a Netgear GS116Ev2 (there are other switches with similar settings enabled).

“Now, usually I would never blame a switch since they’re fairly ‘dumb’ devices, but after disabling ‘IGMP Snooping’ on it which was on my default, magically the stability of my network has improved dramatically and things no longer drop randomly.”

Why You Hate Contemporary Architecture | Current Affairs
“For many socialists in the 20th century, the abdication of decorative elements and traditional forms seemed to be a natural outgrowth of a revolutionary spirit of simplicity, solidarity, and sacrifice. But the joke was on the socialists, really, because as it turned out, this obsession with minimalism was also uniquely compatible with capitalism’s miserable cult of efficiency. After all, every dollar expended on fanciful balusters or stained glass rose windows needed to produce some sort of return on investment. And since such things can be guaranteed to produce almost no return on investment, they had to go.”

Measurement and Review of Schiit BiFrost Multibit DAC | Audio Science Review (ASR) Forum
It looks like this guy really didn’t like Schiit’s Bifrost Multibit DAC.
“It is no secret that the previous Schiit products have not done well on my workbench. But I was hoping as suggested by many that their high-end products would do better. Alas, what is shown above is just unacceptable. It shows a product that simply has no design hygiene. Either wrong DACs are used or driven incorrectly in the implementation. There are DACs literally at 10% of the cost that do much better.”

What's the difference between adding a friend on Reddit, and following someone? : NoStupidQuestions
“If you follow them their posts will appear on your Front Page along with the posts from all the subreddits you subscribe to.

“If you add them as a Friend only two things happen: 1) their username appears in Red with an [F] every time you see their name; and 2) you can see all your Friend’s new posts and comments by visiting /r/friends. Their posts do not appear on your Front Page unless they get there by normal means (i.e. upvoted in a subreddit).”

Alienating the Audience: How Abbreviations Hamper Scientific Communication – Association for Psychological Science
“Abbreviations are all too common in scientific communication and are mostly unnecessary; this is reason enough for conscientious writers to avoid them. In many cases, they can confuse and alienate unfamiliar audiences, and even well-intentioned writers and speakers may overestimate an audience’s familiarity with abbreviations.

“Abbreviations shouldn’t be completely avoided, but using them as a default can be problematic. Mindful writers will notice that most abbreviations are unnecessary and will choose to replace them with the meaningful words that underlie them.”

Fixing stuck modifiers. : olkb
“I’m still getting stuck modifiers with my keymap.

“Basically, my modifiers (ctrl, alt, meta) are working as if they were CapsLock keys. This is despite having #define PREVENT_STUCK_MODIFIERS in my config.h.

“I filed an issue on github, but in the meantime, I’m wondering if there are any other possible solutions. Could a function help eliminate the ‘locking’ behavior?”

“Fixed with the help of /u/jackhumbert. The answer is to have KC_TRNS, instead of KC_NO, for the modifier keys on the temporary layers.”

Connection Failing 12/23/17 | Page 3 | TiVoCommunity Forum
“Well, after some packet tracing and a little shenanigans, I’m back online.

“When the Tivo first connects, it connect to something that I presume is a load balancer, and it responds with whom should be contacted next.

“hserver:h2.tivoservice.com:80

“It then connects to h2.tivoservice.com:80, sends some data, the connection abruptly closes, and the Tivo says failed.

“So who is h2?

“nslookup h2.tivoservice.com
“Name: pdk-vip.tp1.tivo.com
“Address: 208.73.183.229
“Aliases: h2.tivoservice.com

“Hmm, is there a h1? Yes there is…

“nslookup h1.tivoservice.com
“Name: pdk.sj.tivo.com
“Address: 208.73.181.202
“Aliases: h1.tivoservice.com

“So, shall we shenanigan, assume h2 is sick, and redirect all traffic destined to h2, to h1 instead? On the router…

“iptables -t nat -t nat -A PREROUTING -s 10.1.1.216/32 -d 208.73.183.229/32 -j DNAT –to-destination 208.73.181.202

“(The first IP is the ip of one of my Tivo’s. The second is h2. The third is h1.)

“And my daily calls now work. (Odd note, after introducing the redirect, it always works on the ‘second’ daily call, and from then on. If I remove the redirect and break it again, it fails immediately. Then after reintroducing the redirect, it works on the second call again. That I can’t explain without more tracing, so do call twice.)”

Accidental ENTER - Typing & Ergonomics - Keyboardio community
(This thread offers some ideas on setting up the thumb keys and the like:)

“thumbs are now (left-right) ctrl, bksp, shift, alt — cmd, ctrl, space, shift

“enter is defined in 3 places: enter key on RM01 and fn + space, on LM01 its fn + v (because I’ll probably never use middle mouse click)

“escape is default on LM01, and fn + cmd on RM01

“windows key is cmd (moved to right thumb row) on RM01, and fn + alt on LM01 (alt moved from RM01 to left thumb row)

“I left ctrl default on LM01 because its conducive to copying and pasting, ctrl-c, ctrl-v and its comfortable there. That same key position is shift on the RM01, again because my thumbs naturally hit the inner thumb arcs easier than reaching for the outer arc(s).”

---

“I placed Enter where the right hand Shift key originally was. I also placed both Shifts next to Backspace and Space, i.e. I have now: ctrl - bksp - shift - cmd || enter (cap says alt) - shift - space - ctrl”

---

> If I were learning fresh, I would swap ENTER to BUTTERFLY.

“That’s my second mod, after oneshot, thanks for the suggestion! The butterfly is easy to hit with my thumb, and hard to hit by accident, so this is perfect.”

Full-size, TKL, 60% and more: a guide to mechanical keyboard sizes – The Keyboard Company
“When I was a boy, keyboards only came in one size: large. 104 or 105 keys were the norm, and anything less would make you feel a little short changed! As mechanical keyboards have exploded in popularity, keyboard makers have created new layouts (and repopularised old ones!) with far fewer keys. We’re talking about Tenkeyless keyboards with 87 keys, or keyboards with 75%, 60% or even 40% of the keys you’d expect on a full-size keyboard.

“In this article, we’ll show you some of the most popular keyboard form factors, tell you about their strengths and weaknesses, and suggest some of our favourite keyboards of that type.”

HDMI and HDCP versions supported? | TiVoCommunity Forum
“It’s because of HDCP. If you power up from sink to source, waiting for each device to be ready first before powering up the next device, then you’re far more likely to be successful. This is because the EDID has to backwards propagate - the sink produces an EDID (which also indicates HDCP status). It’s read the source earlier in the chain, like an AV receiver, which takes it and modifies it to add more capabilities (e.g., additional sound processing). As part of this, it needs to also propagate HDCP status. Then when TiVO gets around, it reads the EDID from the receiver, and gets the HDCP status of both the receiver and the TV.

“The thing, if you power stuff up somewhat randomly, then the HDCP status isn’t necessarily ready by the time the next device needs it so it gets an incorrect status which is propagated backwards. Usually the fix is to re-handshake everything so they can all refresh their status properly.

“Your best bet is just sequencing - turn on the TV< wait 30 seconds, turn on the receiver, wait 20 seconds then TiVo should be OK.”

Should I Use the Adjective “Diverse”? | Radical Copyeditor
“So it may seem like a small act to use the word diverse in a manner that is true to its dictionary definition, but it’s a small act with big ripple effects when you refuse to buy into a system that teaches us what ‘normal’ is and then defines everything else as Other. Diverse is not Other. Diverse describes the collective beauty of humanity.”

Kailh Low-Profile Switches Emerge On ‘Meira’ 40% Ortho Keyboard
About the Kailh Choc switches:
“Because these switches don’t have the MX-compatible cross stem, keycap compatibility is an issue. However, by dint of the fact that this is supposed to be a particularly low-profile keyboard, you won’t want standard-height caps anyway. Instead, WoodKeys is working with NovelKeys on special Kailh caps for them. The caps are available in black or white (with no legends, for the bravest among us), black with white legends, or white with gray legends.”

Nikon Z 6 is a lower resolution, less expensive Z 7: Digital Photography Review
“The Z 6 uses a ‘Nikon-designed’ full-frame 24.5MP BSI-CMOS sensor and has a total of 273 PDAF points (compared to 45.7MP and 493 points on the Z 7, respectively). It has a native ISO range spanning from ISO 100 to 51,200, missing out on the Z 7’s ISO 64 mode.

“The Z 6 will be available in late November – two months after the Z 7 – and will be available with the 24-70mm F4 S lens or body-only. The Z6 will cost $1995 body-only or $2599 with the 24-70mm F4 lens.”
