Apple says Siri audio grading program will return later this fall, with privacy-focused policy changes - 9to5Mac
“Apple today announced that it will be reinstating the Siri audio program later in the year with some new policy changes. Apple apologized for how it previously handled user data.

“The company says it will no longer retain audio recordings by default. Users will have to opt in if they want Apple to use voice samples, and Apple will aim to delete any recordings that are inadvertent activations.”

iOS 13 tidbits: Battery, Maps improvements, more - 9to5Mac
“Automatically close tabs in Safari:
“If you’re the type of person who accumulates a lot of tabs in Safari, iOS 13 includes a nifty new feature for you. You can now have Safari automatically close all of your tabs after one day, one week, or one month.

“There are two ways to access this option. In Safari itself, long-press on the windows button in the lower-left corner, choose ‘Close All Tabs’ and iOS should ask whether you want to enable the automatically close tabs feature. You can also go to Settings > Safari and ‘Close Tabs’ to view the option.”

--
“App updates have moved:
“In favor of a new Apple Arcade tab in the App Store app, Apple has relocated the interface for viewing app updates. To access the recently updated apps list, tap your account icon in the upper-right corner of the App Store interface. Then you should see a new ‘Updated Recently’ list of applications with change logs.

“While many users now have automatic app updates enabled, this does make it harder to find change logs and know what exactly has been updated.”

Opinion: It’s time for Apple to start offering lossless music formats on iTunes | 9to5Mac
"Selling lossless music would also fit perfectly with Apple’s business model: selling a premium product at a premium price. Lossless downloads are a niche business right now, served by companies most people have never heard of, like HDtracks, ProStudio Masters and iTrax. But with Apple’s marketing might, it could transform the business into a much more mainstream one."

Apple invites Upgrade Program members to ‘get a head start on your upgrade to iPhone X’ | 9to5Mac
"The ‘head start’ period doesn’t seem to apply to new customers wanting to join the iPhone Upgrade Plan, however, so your best bet on getting the fastest checkout experience is sticking with your current plan for iPhone X if possible. Apple notes on its Upgrade Program website that iPhone orders may be limited and "will be determined on a first-come, first-served basis.’"

Selling your MacBook Pro with Touch Bar? Apple recommends this step | 9to5Mac
"If you’re selling (or generously handing down) your MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, Apple recommends an extra step when erasing your data before parting ways with your machine. This step requires an obscure Terminal command that you wouldn’t assume and isn’t required on Macs without the Touch Bar."

Tips and Tricks: Ten Safari long-press shortcuts for iPhone and iPad | 9to5Mac
"The Tabs toolbar button is located on the right side of the screen, either at the top on iPad or bottom on iPhone. Tapping it launches the carousel view of preview cards for all the open tabs. However, you can also long-press it to reveal several more options.

"Without entering the tab screen, a long-press on the button reveals an action sheet. You can close all open tabs in one tab or close the current tab. You can also quickly open a new tab, either in a normal window or jumping to Private Browsing mode."

---

"New to iOS 11, it is actually possible to have Safari automatically launch Reader for select domains. This means you can view a particular website without distractions, in the streamlined reading-focused Safari Reader interface, automatically every single time.

"To enable this, navigate to a page that supports Reader. Then, long-press on the Reader icon (three lines) in the URL bar. This will open a pop-up to enable Automatic Reader View. You can choose to enable it just for the current website domain or on any website you visit. Enabling this option means every page will open in Reader view if it is available, and you will have to tap to disable it every single time."

"iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X support fast charging. You can go from 0 to 50% charge in 30 minutes … but you need an Apple USB-C charger and Lightning cable (sold separately).

[…]

"However, to take advantage of fast-charging, you cannot use the Lightning to USB-A cable that is bundled in the box. Fast charging requires a USB-C to Lightning cable and the USB-C wall charger."

Review: Corning’s 33-foot Optical Thunderbolt cable allows you to move your Thunderbolt devices (or Mac) far away from your desk | 9to5Mac
"I’ve been using the 33-foot version for a few weeks and here’s my take:

"While I don’t own a Thunderbolt Display, I do own a Thunderbolt dock from Matrox (review here but Belkin’s is better/cheaper at $149) that has lived within 3 feet of my Mac until now.  That’s nice, but you can see from the review that the proximity to the Mac creates some spaghetti wire messes.

"Enter the Corning 33 foot Thunderbolt optical cable: Now I can leave my Mac in a closet about 20 feet away from my desk next to the UPS and the cable modem.  All of a sudden, I’ve got a whole lot more desk space and only a thin Fiber-optic cable winding its way up to the desktop. It is even cleaner if you have a Thunderbolt Display."
