Michael Tsai - Blog - Yahoo Groups Shutting Down
(On alternatives to Yahoo Groups:)

“Groups.io seems like the best successor and is free for unlimited members, funded by
premium features. It’s already being used by apple-dev and has instructions for transferring from Yahoo and Google. Another alternative is Gaggle, which is only free up to 20 members.”

Yolian Ogbu on Twitter: "THINGS TO DO INSTEAD OF CALLING THE COPS (thread) *strong communities make police obsolete" / Twitter
“THINGS TO DO INSTEAD OF CALLING THE COPS
“(thread)

“*strong communities make police obsolete

“1) Don’t feel obligated to defend property–especially corporate ‘private’property. Before confronting someone or contacting the police, ask yourself if anyone is being hurt or endangered by property ’theft’ or damage. If the answer is ‘no’, then let it be

“2) If something of yours is stolen and you need to file a report, consider going to the police station instead of bringing cops into your community. You may inadvertently put someone in your neighborhood at risk

“3) If you see someone pulled over with car trouble, stop and ask if they need help of if you can call a tow truck for them. Police may give punitive and unnecessary tickets to people with car issues, target those without papers, or worse

“4) Keep a contact list of community resources like suicide hotlines. When police are contacted to ‘manage’ such situations, people with mental illness are 16 times more likely to be killed by cops than those without mental health challenges

“5) Check your impulse to call the police on someone ‘suspicious’. Is their race, gender, ethnicity, class, or housing situation influencing your choice? Such calls can be death sentences for many people

“shoutout to #winnipegpolicecauseharm for putting together these community alternatives to policing”

Tampermonkey :: Add-ons for Firefox
(This Greasemonkey alternative might be worth a look, but based off the comments here, this may still have some issues
"As a long-time userscript developer I am very familiar with this extension on Chrome. The functionality of Tampermonkey is so much better than that of Greasemonkey and it is running like a dream in any Chromium-based browser too.

"Sadly the same cannot be said for this iteration of the extension. Tampermonkey for Firefox is at times horribly slow (most notably the script editor itself frequently makes the browser hang for seconds), it starts chewing up memory in insane amounts (at the time of this writing I'm looking at about:memory data of almost 900MB that has built up over the day, despite only a handful of open tabs and less than ten small scripts) and it also doesn't appear to be very optimized for the Fox yet (I'm seeing scrollbars in the icon's pop-down menu on any website a script exists for)."

// Just for completeness, here’s the original description:
"Tampermonkey is a free browser extension and the most popular userscript manager. It's available for Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Safari, Opera Next, Dolphin Browser and Firefox.

"Tampermonkey will give you much convenience in managing your userscripts. It provides features like easy script installation, automatic update checks, a simple overview what scripts are running at a tab and a built-in editor."

Replacing “crazy” for ableism and preciseness of language

TextExpander and App Rental
On TextExpander alternatives:
"On the Mac and iOS TypeIt4Me works. It's not as good as TE but it does a lot of what most people need. (UPDATE: TypeIt4Me can also import TE snippets. I just recreated them instead) Typinator is made by Ergonis which is a reliable longtime Mac developer. Alfred is just fine for basic snippets on the Mac but aText is probably the better option if you don't like TypeIt4Me or Typinator.

"Keyboard Maestro is far more powerful than TextExpander on the Mac but lacks any useful functionality on iOS. It's also more difficult to wrangle for some people. For me, Keyboard Maestro is a major step up from TextExpander and I'll make the transition with ease."
