Latest macOS 10.14 Mojave freezing 1-2 seconds every few minutes (except mouse and sound) and then continues? - Ask Different
(There isn’t much in the way of replies here, but at least it’s not just you.)

“Since a week or two I am experiencing a very strange problem on my Macbook Pro running macOS 10.14 Mojave. I have all the latest updates installed (currently no new updates available).

“No matter what I’m doing, typing something in a browser or text editor or other application, watching a video on youtube or in VLC, every few minutes the whole system become non-responsive for like 1 or 2 seconds.

“No response to keyboard activity, video playback stops, mouse clicks don’t work. However if any sound is playing, that keeps on playing normally. And the mouse pointer still moves. When I was typing something, the letters don’t appear, but after 1-2 sec when the system continues, the letters still appear as if they were cached somehow.

“So when I’m watching a video (either streaming or just a local video file with VLC) the screen will suddenly stop i.e. the video picture appears ‘frozen’, but the sound continues. Then 1-2 sec later the video continues normally.”

“Apple started in leaning into extensions last year, but with its official announcement that it’s getting out of this category, a few other companies have finally jumped in. Al Iverson's Spam Resource: Apple Moves to "Quarantine" DMARC Policy
“If you monitor these things, you might have noticed that Apple’s consumer email domains (iCloud domains) – mac.com, me.com and icloud.com – have moved to a ‘p=quarantine’ DMARC policy. This means that if you have an email address in these domains, your ability to send outbound mail using an email service provider or other, non-Apple email platform to send mail, deliverability won’t look so good. Mail may not be blocked outright (Apple didn’t move to ‘p=reject’) but moving to ‘p=quarantine’ means it’s much more likely that your mail could end up in the spam folder.”

Paul Taylor York
"I’m legally blind. I’m slowly but inexorably losing my sight, and part of this is my ability to distinguish text and other UI elements with extremely low contrast. The problem is quite common, at least relatively speaking. Maintaining a good contrast ratio is a major tenet of UI design for accessibility.

"I’ve been growing increasingly frustrated with the two major players in mobile maps: Google and Apple. It seems they have been working hard to make their mapping applications as difficult as possible to navigate (pun intended) for the visually impaired.

"To put some degree of objectivity behind this observation, I recently took screen shots of a map from both applications and ran the colors through WebAIM’s Color Contrast Checker to see exactly how bad the contrast ratios were. Outline colors were difficult to determine exactly due to anti-aliasing, so I chose the darkest pixels for comparison. Likely the aggregate contrast ratio’s are slightly higher, but not likely by much. Note that these colors also apply to the web versions of their respective mapping applications."

Computer latency: 1977-2017
"Compared to a modern computer that’s not the latest ipad pro, the apple 2 has significant advantages on both the input and the output, and it also has an advantage between the input and the output for all but the most carefully written code since the apple 2 doesn’t have to deal with context switches, buffers involved in handoffs between different processes, etc.

"On the input, if we look at modern keyboards, it’s common to see them scan their inputs at 100 Hz to 200 Hz (e.g., the ergodox claims to scan at 167 Hz). By comparison, the apple 2e effectively scans at 556 Hz. See appendix for details.

"If we look at the other end of the pipeline, the display, we can also find latency bloat there. I have a display that advertises 1 ms switching on the box, but if we look at how long it takes for the display to actually show a character from when you can first see the trace of it on the screen until the character is solid, it can easily be 10 ms. You can even see this effect with some high-refresh-rate displays that are sold on their allegedly good latency."

As fans await update for 3-year-old Mac mini, Apple classifies mid-2011 models 'obsolete'
"The vintage and obsolete products page was updated to reflect the fact that the mid-2011 Mac mini is no longer supported by the company, meaning services and repairs are no longer offered.

"Apple guarantees parts and service for products 5 years after it is no longer manufactured. After that, they become obsolete worldwide, with the exception of in California and Turkey, where laws require another two years of support.

"Because of that, the mid-2011 Mac mini remains vintage in the U.S. and Turkey, but is obsolete elsewhere."

Think Retro: Open Apple, closed Apple | Macworld
"Well, I say “put an end to,” but things are never that clear-cut. With the Apple IIGS, Apple also introduced ADB, its now-old connection for input devices, but because ADB would be used for the Mac as well, the primary modifier key on Apple keyboards would have both the new ⌘ symbol and the old Open Apple symbol on them to allow them to control both the old and new systems. That weird and potentially confusing state of affairs continued for a couple of decades, but in 2007 Jobs’ vision was finally realized and the Apple symbol was removed for good. In its place, on U.S. keyboards, the word Command joins the ⌘, while in Europe it’s Cmd."

Begun, The Codec War Has | Time.code()
"In 2017, the licensing situation is far worse. HEVC contains hundreds (probably thousands, but I couldn’t verify) of patented technologies. This has long been the case with the MPEG codecs, and the way they deal with this is with patent pools: rather than having to negotiate licenses with every company that has IP in the standard, “patent pools” like MPEG-LA offer a one-stop shop for paying all the needed licenses in one place. The problem is, some patent holders aren’t in the MPEG-LA pool. Some are in a rival pool, HEVC Advance. And then a third one recently popped up. And Technicolor SA has HEVC patents that aren’t in any of the pools, so everything still sucks. And the cherry on top is that the license demands are pricier than H.264, hitting makers of both encoders and decoders, as well as content providers. It’s pretty much a dumpster fire, and one reason that Netflix has stayed away from HEVC thusfar, according to a Streaming Media NAB article."

No Way To Limit Number of Notifications in Notification Center? | MacRumors Forums
(FFS.)
"Yeah, "interestingly" enough, in iOS 9 (at least so far) Apple got rid of the option to limit notifications to 1, or 5, or 10, like they used to have."

osx - Is there any way to save Mac OS X preferences into a shell file? - Ask Different
(Well, here’s a revelation!)
“‘com.apple.systempreferences' doesn't actually contain any preferences for the System. It contains the preferences for the System Preferences application. So none of the actual configuration you do with System Preferences are stored in this file”

Also, this post goes over these steps for importing and exporting preferences from plists:

"Exporting the Power Management (Energy Saver) System Preferences to pm.plist:
defaults export /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement pm.plist

“Importing those preferences from pm.plist on the new computer:
defaults import /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement sysprefs.plist “

Also:
"The preference files for sandboxed applications are now stored in ~/Library/Containers/, but I don't know if copying it to another Mac would cause any issues."

/usr/libexec/lsd using 100% of CPU | Communities
(Ideas on tracking down the cause of “lsof” using high CPU:)
"It seems i have found the solution to this problem.

"It was an Oculus Rift DK2 test app called CyberSpace.app that resided in my Downloads folder. Using "lsof" and the stacktrace I was able to find that the /usr/libexec/lsd process most likely was trying to generate a code signing object using https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Security/Reference/CodeSig ningRef/#//apple_ref/c/func/SecStaticCod…

"After removing the application from Downloads and killing the lsd process it eventually stopped using CPU resources and resumed operations normally.

"If you ever encounter this problem I would recommend running lsof looking for the lsd process started by the currently logged in user.
pgrep -u `id -u` lsd | xargs lsof -p

About Time Machine local snapshots - Apple Support
"When you enter Time Machine, a timeline appears on the right side of the screen. Each dated tick mark in the timeline is a backup, and each backup has a color when you move the pointer over it:
• A bright red tick mark is a backup that can be restored now, either from a local snapshot or your backup drive. When your backup drive isn't available, only the local snapshots are bright red.
• A dimmed red tick mark is a backup that can be restored from your backup drive after that drive becomes available. Until then, the stack of windows on the screen shows a blank window for that backup."

Opinion: Apple badly needs to fix App Store search, but not by paid placements | 9to5Mac
