‎A Smarter Shopping List : App Store Story
“You might think little can be done to improve the humble grocery list. But the Grocery app does just that.

“As you would expect, adding items to a list in the app is straightforward. The real magic happens when you get to the store.

“While you’re shopping, Grocery learns the order in which you check off items. Then on your next trip, the app will sort your list for maximum efficiency.

“Pretty cool, right?”

Versions
This kinda looks like a local-only version of Dropbox, sorta?

“This application is a simple versioning system for tracking changes in your important files and documents. New versions are created automatically when updates are detected in your file. You can also add versions manually as you need them.

“Versions supports any file type: Photoshop designs, Archicad or AutoCAD projects, Final Cut or After Effects media files, GarageBand music files, actually any document out there can be versioned with this application.

“The versions database can be stored in a backup folder (like Dropbox, SkyDrive or Drive) or on external drives - a good way to keep everything safe and manageable.”

Michael Tsai - Blog - How to Flip an App for Profit
“Background used to be a good app. You can tell from its early reviews that its users genuinely enjoyed browsing and making use of its hand-curated selection of iPhone wallpapers. In fact, its reviews are generally positive up until late June, when an update began causing some issues. From that point on it becomes clear that Background is no longer owned or updated by its original developer. It’s been flipped.

“[…]

“The gold standard seems to be a 3-day trial that moves into a $9.99/week subscription, but there’s flexibility here, depending on precisely how evil you want to be. Make sure to hide these new payment options from your pre-acquisition users. After all, you don’t want them updating their glowing past reviews. Oh, and for those new users you’re about to acquire? Make sure it’s darn near impossible for them to find the ‘x’ to close your subscription view (or, for fun, make it completely nonfunctional!).”

How to link notes together - Bear - Faq and support
“In Bear, you can create links between notes and even link to specific sections of a note. This is great for all kinds of projects, from creating a personal wiki to a table of contents for a book. Here is how this feature works.”

(to:dr — The main trick is that you can type “[[“ and then a few letters of the other note’s name to trigger Bear’s autocomplete list of matching note names.)

Bear 1.7 is here with note Encryption, Bear Lock, Live Note Links, and more!
Among the new features in Bear 1.7:

“Live Note Links
“Bear has this great feature where you can link notes together. It’s great for organizing notes for a project, building a personal wiki or journal, and more.

“In Bear 1.7, note links will now update automatically if you change the title of a linked note. We now call these Live Note Links.

“More Special Searches
“Search is a powerful tool in Bear, and in 1.7 we’re expanding the array of Special Search operators available. Your searches can now include or exclude tags, focus on top-level tags (excluding nested tags), and more.

“Emoji Autocomplete
“Introducing Emoji Autocomplete. Now, anywhere in a note, type a colon (:) and a few letters, and Bear will suggest emoji for you. Try something like :laugh or :food or :work.”

iOS 13 tidbits: Battery, Maps improvements, more - 9to5Mac
“Automatically close tabs in Safari:
“If you’re the type of person who accumulates a lot of tabs in Safari, iOS 13 includes a nifty new feature for you. You can now have Safari automatically close all of your tabs after one day, one week, or one month.

“There are two ways to access this option. In Safari itself, long-press on the windows button in the lower-left corner, choose ‘Close All Tabs’ and iOS should ask whether you want to enable the automatically close tabs feature. You can also go to Settings > Safari and ‘Close Tabs’ to view the option.”

--
“App updates have moved:
“In favor of a new Apple Arcade tab in the App Store app, Apple has relocated the interface for viewing app updates. To access the recently updated apps list, tap your account icon in the upper-right corner of the App Store interface. Then you should see a new ‘Updated Recently’ list of applications with change logs.

When Workers Control the Code | WIRED
“In practice, that means more money goes to the people who actually put in the elbow grease. When customers use Up & Go to hire a house cleaner, only 5 percent goes to the app (3 percent for transaction costs and a wee 2 percent for business costs like running Up & Go’s servers and development). There’s no venture capitalist demanding hockey-stick growth or profits. ‘Investors are nowhere at the table,’ says Danny Spitzberg, who worked for a year and a half at CoLab, a digital agency, on Up & Go. The house cleaners make an average $22.25 per hour, about $5 more than the area average.”

iPhone XS: Why It’s A Whole New Camera – Halide
“This isn’t the kind of noise we can easily remove in post-processing. This isn’t the gentle, film-like grain we previously saw in iPhone X and iPhone 8 RAW files.

“As it stands today, if you shoot RAW with an iPhone XS, you need to go manual and under-expose. Otherwise you’ll end up with RAWs worse than Smart HDR JPEGs. All third-party camera apps are affected. Bizarrely, RAW files from the iPhone X are better than those from the iPhone XS.”

“Fortunately, it doesn’t have to stay that way. Since the iPhone XS came out, we’ve spent days, nights and weekends working to figure out a solution so we can get the most out of the bigger sensor and its deeper pixels.

“We’re happy to announce a new feature in Halide 1.10 called Smart RAW, which uses the new sensor technology in the iPhone XS to get better images than an iPhone X could ever take. Smart RAW does not use any aspect of Smart HDR — in fact, it avoids it altogether, so you end up with almost no noise reduction.”

It has a tougher time tracking light sleep, being only 64 percent accurate. These are not independent studies, so take them with a grain of salt, but we appreciated the transparency.”

Portrait Camera App 'Focos' Gains Real Lens Optical Effects and Improved Shooting Mode - Mac Rumors
From the comments:
“‘Is it better than the default camera app for portrait?’

“For sure. You can adjust just about anything in there. You can separate the background and edit saturation, hue, brightness etc and edit the front in a different way. You can set up lenses for various effects and tweak them as well.

“There's also way to select the exact point that the background is blurred (so you won't cut ears off or hair). Great great app.”

Brighter and Bigger - All this
(Basically, Brighter and Bigger is kinda like the iOS Magnifier.)
"Some time ago, I installed an app called Brighter and Bigger, which does exactly what you’d expect. It shows live output from the camera, and allows you to zoom in and fiddle with the exposure and contrast."

The Best Air Purifier: Wirecutter Reviews | A New York Times Company
"You’ll notice that the air inside, in every case, is worse than what is outside. That’s counterintuitive, but typical: Inside air quality generally reflects the outside air conditions—and adds new sources of particulate pollution, like pet dander, dusty carpets and rugs, and people moving around and stirring things up."

(And as an aside—)
"NoiSee is one of the top recommended apps in a survey of 192 apps by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, where it came within +/-2 decibels of reference measurements. That’s plenty accurate for our purposes."

My favorite behind-the-scenes iOS utilities – Finer Things in Tech
"GIFWrapped for iPhone and iPad is a simple, useful app for collecting GIFs. An app extension can pull them from webpages, tweets, and elsewhere. Dropbox sync has you covered. A search tool and clipboard sniffer make it easy to expand."

SoundShare: The social music app, adds Party Mode, more
"SoundShare was already a great social music app, but it just got better with the release of 3.0 and new features like Party Mode.

"SoundShare allows you to connect your music subscription service like Apple Music, Spotify, and Deezer to the app and build collaborative playlists with your friends. If you don’t subscribe to any of those services, you can still use YouTube, so everyone can join in.

"The great thing about SoundShare is that it doesn’t matter what service your friends belong to, the app will allow all of them in a single playlist."

Sanitize Content Blocker — Tools and Toys
"I had been having issues with the content blocker I have been using (pages were just broken and missing functionality), and a friend recommend Sanitize to me.

"It blocks ads, tracking scripts, social share buttons, pop-ups, and other annoying items from websites you visit. Once you download it, go to the Settings app > Safari > Content Blocker to enable. It’s been much better experience than the previous app I was using.

"If you use Safari on the desktop, it’s also available as a Safari extension."

Five essential apps to track your spending, save money, and pay your friends - The Verge
"The spending tracker has a particularly clever design. Clarity will show you how much you spent on several categories by week, month, or year: Uber, Lyft, Starbucks, and Amazon are among the big expenses that Clarity can show you at a glance. I’m also taken with its colorful categorized spending charts: tap a section of the chart to examine the spending category and the chart will transform with new illustrations related to the category."

Supertop Blog: Design Details: Drag and Drop
"Although drag and drop on iPhone is limited to being used within a single application, we found that its multi-touch support and the direct manipulation it allows open up powerful new opportunities for batch actions and other features that were cumbersome before, and the lessons we learned on iPhone are relevant to iPad too."
