DPI Calculator / PPI Calculator
This is a pretty neat jobbie that can calculate the DPI/PPI for monitors. To be in the “good zone” for Retina without scaling, one would want something that’s between 200 PPI and 225 PPI, I think.

(The “good zone” bits are via: https://bjango.com/articles/macexternaldisplays/)

Magic Number – The Calculator For Mac
This is actually a really nice calculator app for macOS—

✓ Supports menubar mode
✓ Supports keyboard shortcuts
✓ Automagically adds commmas for thousands and translates “x” to “×”

Plus:
• The Loop had some pretty good things to say about it: http://www.loopinsight.com/2015/07/30/magic-number-fantastic-calculator-for-os-x/
• And the reviews on the Mac App Store are pretty much universally positive

(So barring any unforeseen weirdness, perhaps this could be a replacement for Calq?)

The unstoppable TI-84 Plus: How an outdated calculator still holds a monopoly on classrooms - The Washington Post
“Electronics almost universally become cheaper over time. But with essentially a monopoly on graphing calculator usage in classrooms, Texas Instruments can charge a premium. Texas Instruments accounted for 93 percent of the U.S. graphing calculator sales from July 2013-June 2014. Casio took the other 7 percent, according to NPD data. During that period 1.6 million graphing calculators were sold, a decrease from sales of 1.67 million during July 2011-June 2012.”

Difficult & Extraneous Word Finder
“A 1995 study [1] found that junior high school students were able to recognize between 10,000–12,000 words, whereas college students were able to recognize between 12,000–17,000 words.

“While, which 10,000-12,000 words vary based on the individual, we can make assumptions about the recognizability of a word based on how common the word is. The more common a word is, the more likely an individual is to have been exposed to it, and thus the more likely that individual would be to recognize and understand the word. The Rare Scale is a linear scale based on word ranks from 10,000 – 20,000. A word with rank at or below 10,000 would be a 0% (thus considered common) on the rare scale, and a word with rank at or above 20,000 would be a 100% (thus considered rare) on the rare scale.”

minimalist calculator on the Mac App Store
This looks like an interesting Calq-like calculator, but two downsides come to mind right off the bat:
• It hasn’t been updated since August 2014 (as of November 2016)
• And the domain that’s listed for the developer's website is returning 403 Forbidden.

Using Soulver for design
"There’s nothing wrong with shuffling and resizing layers around until reaching the desired outcome, but I often get quicker results by breaking out a calculator. And for this kind of work, Soulver is my favourite, because of the way it handles constants and multiline equations." (See also https://gist.github.com/apalancat/6009963 for a downloadable set of the variables used here.)
