Set a Default Finder Window Size with a Relaunch
“The Finder window behavior can get a bit frustrating if you like your windows to open up at the same size every time. So, MacWorld tried to come up with a way to get consistent behavior. It’s a bit weird, but it seems to work:

“1. Open a Finder window and set it the size you want
2. Close all windows (Command+Options+W and click the close button)
3. Hold down the Option key, right-click the Finder icon, and select relaunch”

Finder security errors opening documents: a summary – The Eclectic Light Company
“In certain circumstances, trying to open a document in macOS 10.8 and later can result in a security error and refusal. This article summarises knowledge about this issue: how it arises, what it means, and how to work around it.

“This issue only affects documents for which the default app has been set to a different one, either in the Finder’s Get Info dialog or by some other means. If you never use that feature, then it should never trouble you on your Mac.”

Five unexpected uses for the Tab key | Macworld
“In Finder windows, in all but Column view, pressing the Tab key selects the next file alphabetically. You may not have noticed this because so many windows are already sorted alphabetically, so it seems that Tab merely selects the ‘next’ file. But if a window is sorted by something other than name—Size or Kind, for instance—you can always access the next alphabetic item by pressing Tab, with Shift-Tab selecting the previous alphabetic file.”

Smarter keyboard shortcuts for Finder -
Brett Terpstra shares some keyboard shortcuts that he’s set up for the Finder:
"There are default shortcuts for sorting (Name, Modified date, etc.) and display grouping, but I’ve always found them obtuse. I assign these to standard Function keys, e.g. F1-F3 handle quickly sorting by Name, Date, or Size on my system.”

(Also, this bit from one of the comments goes over how to assign a keyboard shortcut to a menu item when that name might appear more than once in an application’s menus:)
“You have to recreate the menu structure, starting from the menu entry visible in the menu bar, separating items using `->` without any additional space.

"Example : `Presentation->Sort by->Name` will work along side with `Presentation->Arrange by->Name`

"Hope that helps."

Create a new folder in the current list-view directory - Mac OS X Hints
This post offers a handy AppleScript jobbie that creates a new folder inside the current folder when the Finder is in list view (and presumably other views as well, I would imagine)

(You currently have this bound to Option+N within Finder windows, through Keyboard Maestro.)

In case this page were to ever break, here’s the AppleScript:

tell application "Finder"
set selectedItem to selection
set currentPath to ((the first item of the selectedItem) as alias)
set parentPath to ""

if (currentPath as string) ends with ":" then
-- it is a folder
set the parentPath to currentPath
-- it is a file
set {od, AppleScript's text item delimiters} to {AppleScript's text item delimiters, ":"}
set the parentPath to (text items 1 thru -2 of (currentPath as string)) as string
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to od
end if

set newFolder to (my createFolder(parentPath))

end tell
on error -- no folder or file is selected
tell application "Finder"
set the currentPath to (folder of the front window as alias)
set parentFolder to currentPath

set newFolder to (my createFolder(currentPath))

end tell
end try

on createFolder(folderLocation)
tell application "Finder"
set thisFolder to make new folder at folderLocation

set selection to thisFolder
tell application "System Events"
keystroke return
quit -- if i don't do this system events seems to hang???
end tell
return thisFolder
end tell
end createFolder

Remove Duplicates from the “Open With” Right-Click Menu in Mac OS X
"The “Open With” menu appears when any file in the Mac Finder is right-clicked (or control-clicked), and it is intended to provide a list of alternate apps that selected file can be opened with other than what is currently set as the default application. This Open With is great, but sometimes it can become freakishly cluttered with repeat entries of the same app, and in the worst cases it won’t even just be a duplicate here and there, it will be multiples of the same app appearing in the Open With list. We’ll show you how to remove these repeat entries and how to make an easier to use alias for future uses."

What to do when El Capitan sidebar's favorites disappear | Macworld
So—it seems that the favorites-disapeparing-from-the-sidebar problem is sort of a widespread thing in El Cap :-/.

"While several solutions have been proposed, including deleting cache files and the like, what appears to work best—and worked for me—is to restart your Mac. When I had my sidebar faves disappear, I also had some other seemingly inexplicable slowdowns and system oddities. These went away with the restart as well.
