MacOS Mojave broke simulate keystroke (ctrl + arrow) - Questions & Suggestions - Keyboard Maestro Discourse
(Apparently simulated keys don’t work in Mojave if it’s a keyboard shortcut of an existing app and the shortcut include arrows or function keys.)

“Yes, simulated keys that are hot keys of the system or other applications, that use arrows or function keys apparently don’t trigger the hot keys in Mojave.

“I have reported this to Apple (and done all the hard work of providing them with a test application). No idea if they will resolve it, for all I know they think this is a security feature.”

Memory leak, especially during sleep · Issue #9 · kevingessner/FunctionFlip
So it looks like there may be a memory leak in FunctionFlip (at least as of May 2018)?

Modifier keys (Cmd, Option / Alt, Shift) aren't registered when used in combination with function keys · Issue #1160 · tekezo/Karabiner-Elements
Apparently Karabiner Elements might break built-in modifier+FunctionKey bindings when it’s running? (Potential solution: Enable “Unknown Device in Karabiner Element’s settings.)
“When using IntelliJ IDEA and the built in keyboard, modifier keys aren’t registered when used in combination with function keys. I have set the MacOS System Preference to always show function keys when using IntelliJ (System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Function Keys).”

FNable | FNable
"FNable automatically switches between Function-Keys and System Controls on a normal keyboard. Or it switches between the different states of a Touch Bar Keyboard. The switch happens automatically to match the front-most application's preferences.”

Customize Your Mac's Top Keys to Control Either Functions or Built-in Features Without Using “Fn” « Mac Tips
(On getting FunctionFlip to run on recent versions of macOS:)
"FunctionFlip is not available in the Mac App Store, so you will need to download the FunctionFlip.zip, extract it, then double-click to install. Before installing, make sure that your Gatekeeper security settings will let you install apps from unidentified developers."

Remap Your Mac's Function Keys To Do Anything You Want
"So, what could you use your unused keys for? Here’s a few ideas.

“• An Emoji Key. OS X comes with an emoji tool, but the keyboard shortcut (control+command+space) is kind of hard to remember. You can use BetterTouchTool to trigger the more complex keyboard shortcut every time you hit one of your F-number keys, for faster emoji enjoyment.

"• Launch the notification center. The old-school Dashboard had its own key on older Macs, but notifications widgets have replaced the Dashboard. There’s no key to open the Notification Center, though, so why not create one yourself?"

Kinesis Advantage w/ Reds
As of January 2012, it looks like Kinesis miiight be working on a new keyboard with real function keys?
"Eventually for our new Contoured keyboards, whenever that will be (we are currently in development), they will have true mechanical key switch function keys. No more rubber keys. One of things we want is to be able to remap the keypad key as well, so you can find an easier location rather than reaching up there or using a footswitch."

FunctionFlip - kevingessner
"FunctionFlip individually controls your MacBook or MacBook Pro's function keys, turning special keys back to regular F-keys, or vice-versa."

Macworld | Mac Gems | FunctionFlip 1.1
"But what if you want only some of the function keys to adopt this special behavior? For example, what if you want quick access to volume and brightness controls, but you want the other F-keys to behave like standard F-keys? Kevin Gessner’s FunctionFlip 1.1 is the answer."
