Michael Tsai - Blog - on macOS 10.15
On Catalina’s new Music app to replace iTunes:
“As I dig deeper, I find that a lot has been simplified. There are tasks I had described in my book that had multiple steps that are simpler, and there were often several ways to do something, whereas, now, there is generally just one. I find myself cutting large sections of my book’s content because of this simplification.

“I will miss the column browser; I used this tool constantly to navigate my library by Genre, then Artist, then Album. With Artist, Album, and Genres view, it’s hard to get the big picture. If you have, say, 135 Grateful Dead albums, you need to scroll through the Grateful Dead entry to find the one you want, whereas in the column browser, I could quickly scan a concise list. Or when I wanted to listen to Kind of Blue, it took a few clicks, a quick scan, and I found the album.

“The other feature I’ll miss is that in Songs view – that’s the one where you see items in a list – you can no longer display album artwork. I used that extensively, together with the column browser, as you can see above, because it’s a quick way to scan content to find what I want.”

Michael Tsai - Blog - The Fate of the iTunes Store in macOS Catalina
“In early betas of macOS Catalina, the iTunes Store was visible, but in recent betas it did not show up in the sidebar of the Music app if the user was signed into Apple Music. That seems to be the default now: if a user has an Apple Music account, they won’t see the iTunes Store. You can display it, if you wish, in the Music app’s Preferences, on the General pane, but if you’re a streamer, you won’t see it by default.

“You’ll note that in the screenshots on Apple’s macOS Catalina preview pages, the iTunes Store is not visible.”

iTunes: Missing folder or incorrect permissions may prevent authorization
“iTunes: Missing folder or incorrect permissions may prevent authorization

“With Mac OS X, the Shared folder is required to authorize your iTunes Store purchases. With Windows the iTunes folder is also required. If either of these folders are missing or have incorrect folder permissions, you may notice one of the following symptoms:

My Must-Have Mac Apps, 2018 Edition – MacStories - page 4
“iMazing. I use iMazing primarily to keep my iOS devices backed up. It works over WiFi or a Lightning cable connected to my Mac and, unlike iTunes, has the benefit of creating incremental backups, which make it easy to roll back to a particular stable version of an iOS setup. iMazing can also store your iOS apps on your Mac for faster future installation and backup purposes. Finally, once in a while, I have a reason to dig into the data stored in an app, which is something that can be done with iMazing’s file system browser.”

music - iTunes: Move files off a network drive - Ask Different
This answer may well have the canonical steps for migrating one's iTunes library.

In short:
• In iTunes → Preferences → Advanced
- Make sure “Keep iTunes Media folder organized” is unchecked.
- Make sure "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" is unchecked.
- Make sure “Share iTunes Library XML” is checked.
• Quit iTunes.
• Go to ~/Music/iTunes/
• Delete "iTunes Library.itl”
• Locate "iTunes Library.xml" and/or "iTunes Music Library.xml". Then delete whichever file is older.
• Edit the remaining XML file with a text editor (like TextMate).
• Make a copy of that XML file and rename that copy to whichever XML file you just deleted.
• Use this Terminal command to create a dummy (0-byte) version of "iTunes Library.itl":
touch ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Library.itl
• Lastly, start iTunes normally. It may chug for a while, but that’s okay.

Album-Mode Soundcheck Normalization for iOS
"Yesterday I figured out how iTunes (on the computer) decides whether album normalization or singles normalization is in effect, and the algorithm is very simple:

"All songs play in album mode, all the time, UNLESS a song from one album precedes a song from another album. In that case the song which precedes the song from the different album plays in singles mode. This means that if two contiguous songs are from an album they will play in album mode, even if they are out of order. As long as How thoughtful!

"This algorithm holds whether iTunes is in the artist tab, songs tab, album tab, or playlist. It also holds in shuffle mode.

"The down side to this algorithm is that if you make a playlist with two albums, the LAST song in the first album will play at singles gain. Perhaps iTunes has a rationalization for performing this, so as to smooth out transitions between two completely unrelated albums. But I think they'll be wrong as much as right in this case. And it prevents us from making a playlist that plays properly with, for example, two symphonies in a row. The last movement of the first symphony will be played at the wrong gain. Or two albums from a double album set by the same artist... when shuffled, you can end up with weird effects like the ballads playing as loud as the rockers."

iTunes Sound Check album mode: what does this mean for $rg2sc? - Mp3tag Forums
"Given that Bob confirmed that iTunes has been changed in some way and that there is still just a single iTunNORM tag field, the simple conclusion is that $rg2sc seems broken, since the existing code for $rg2sc only writes track or album gain info and not both simultaneously. It may be fixable if iTunes has been changed such that the album and tag gains are stored in a reformatted iTunNORM tag field, but it may not be fixable if iTunes now uses a combo of iTunNORM and iTunes database info to do both album and track gain changes.

"Determining how (from a tag field/database perspective) iTunes is exactly storing its new gain adjustments is the critical first step. If the new method depends solely on iTunNORM tag field content, then it should be fairly easy to revise $rg2sc code. But both of those steps are beyond my tools and expertise. I can only admire the problem!"

Soundcheck in iTunes 12 | Official Apple Support Communities
As of 2015:
"I have reason to believe that older versions of iTunes used something like a simple analysis of the peak volume. In those days, SoundCheck performed poorly (it was a common complaint in this forum), and many users turned to 3rd party volume normalization tools such as iVolume and MP3Gain.

"It appears that iTunes has made improvements in this area recently. To me, playback sounds much more even, and SoundCheck complaints on this forum are down. The support doc states that Sound Check "computes characteristics of their playback volume" which certainly hints that it is something more sophisticated than a simple peak analysis."

Auphonic Blog: Loudness Targets for Mobile Audio, Podcasts, Radio and TV
"It's also interesting to see how Apple handles the problem of loudness normalization. The Sound Check feature in iTunes analyzes the loudness of newly added songs and stores this information in an ID3 tag or in the iTunes Music Library database. Your iPod then uses this information to compensate loudness differences between different tracks during playback. According to Thomas Lund, a researcher at tc.electronic, the resulting loudness corresponds to around -16 LUFS."

iVolume on the Mac App Store
"iVolume effectively repairs the built-in 'Sound Check' function of iTunes. Information about the loudness is stored by iTunes in a tag named iTunNORM inside your songs. This information is used for playing a song a bit louder or softer at playback time whenever Sound Check is turned on. iTunes' loudness analysis is very fast but unfortunately not very accurate so that Sound Check is not satisfying out-of-the-box. That's were iVolume comes into the game: iVolume re-analyzes every song with a professional algorithm that's oriented on the acoustic perception of the human ear and iVolume then permanently replaces the information in the iTunNORM tag of your songs with perfect values."

beaTunes ~ Replay Gain
"iTunes solves this issue with its proprietary Sound Check, a mechanism that attempts to replay all songs with the same loudness. Another, non-proprietary approach to the problem is ReplayGain.

"beaTunes allows you to perform the ReplayGain analysis and adjust the standardized, track-specific id3 tags as well as the proprietary iTunNORM tags used by iTunes. It does not however, change the actual gain, meaning the original audio data remains untouched. "You can determine how the script will behave next by testing whether certain conditions are met. You can do this with an "if...then" statement; if a condition is true then do something:

if player state is paused then play

Getting Info From iTunes — Noodlings
"The last one (I don’t know exactly when it was released but it was the last one I discovered) is iTunesLibrary (ITLib) and it’s a bit easy to miss because, from what I can tell, it is not a part of the OS, but iTunes itself. You can find the framework under /Library/Frameworks (not /System/Library/Frameworks). It provides similar functionality to the MediaLibrary framework, but specific to iTunes.

“With so many options, which do you use? For the most part, they return the same information though it depends on the version of iTunes. With some versions, one API may return some special playlist that the others don’t. Also, ML is asynchronous while the others are synchronous. I don’t see that as a big deal either way as you can convert one into the other with a tiny bit of work.

"The big differentiating factor is performance. Here are the results for getting a list of playlists for my library:

"XML: 1.66s
ML: 18.79s
ITLib: 0.84s"

Best iTunes automated metadata tagging app? (former Tagalicious user) : apple

Assign Spotify Play/Pause Action to a Keyboard Shortcut | Daily Mac Tips
"As of recently, Spotify has become my music streaming service of choice and I have it going pretty much constantly during my workday. The only downside of using Spotify (at least the only one I’ve come across thus far) is that there are no pause/play/next keyboard shortcuts – and no ability to create them."

Temporarily Pause iTunes - Macro Library - Keyboard Maestro Discourse
"There was a webcomic that went viral years ago where the hero pauses his iPod (i said years ago!), takes care of something, then forgets to resume the music until hours later. I did this all the time. so I wrote a macro that will pause iTunes for 5 minutes, then automatically restart playing.

"It sounded simple at first but over the years of using it i found a lot of edge cases that ended up making the macro somewhat complex. I thought others might be interested in seeing it."

Free Mac App for Tagging Apple Lossless Files? | Steve Hoffman Music Forums
(In case you should need to resort to this…)
"That wasn't clear from your first post.

"There is still a way to do it in iTunes. :--

"1) First, set your import mode (presumably currently ALAC) to something lossless other than ALAC, say AIFF
2) Then select the playlist, right click and create AIFF versions of the files.
3) Select the AIFF files and change the metadata as you wish to create your compilation album.
4) Set the import mode back to ALAC
5) Select the AIFF files, right click and create ALAC versions of your new compilation album.
6) Delete the AIFF files."

Ask the iTunes Guy: What to do when iTunes goes wild | Macworld
(About iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml:)
"macOS includes Time Machine, an automatic backup system that automatically stores copies of your files to an external or network drive. To protect your iTunes library and your other files, it’s a good idea to use Time Machine. This is better than just copying your files or cloning your drive, since it stores multiple versions of your files. If the iTunes Library file in your backup is corrupt, then you’re out of luck, but with Time Machine, you can go back in time and choose different versions until you find one that works.

"I also strongly recommend checking the option mentioned above to have iTunes create that XML file. It doesn’t cost you anything, and it can save your iTunes library if something goes wrong."

Airplay no longer working in iTunes 12.5.1 | Official Apple Support Communities
From September 2016:
"I've been using airplay from iTunes on Mac to an Airport Express and to a Bowers & Wilkins Z2 for several years, both seamlessly with no dropouts. After updating iTunes on my Mac to 12.5.1, I get stuttering audio and inconsistent connections. The only thing that has changed in my entire setup is the iTunes update. Connections to both the airport express and Z2 are both wired, not wireless, so I know there is not interference or an issue with wireless networking. Is anyone else experiencing this?"
