Mac Keyboard Layouts for Windows by adunning
“Since the 1980s, Macintosh computers have included a keyboard layout that facilitates the typing of diacritics and other symbols through the use of the Option key. Windows supplies an ‘International’ layout with a limited range of accents, but using this layout makes the quotation mark and apostrophe keys unusable.

“These keyboard layouts fix this situation: one duplicates the standard U.S. layout used on the Mac (also identical to the ‘Canadian English’ keyboard layout), and the other replicates the ‘U.S. Extended’ keyboard layout introduced with Mac OS X. The U.S. Extended provides more accents and places some characters in more logical positions, but the standard Mac layout provides access to a few mathematical symbols that some might find useful. Unlike the Windows layout, these do not change the basic U.S. keyboard.”

Time to revisit accesskey? – Tink
“Interaction with the virtual buffer works like this: the screen reader listens for keyboard events. When it detects a key press that corresponds to a screen reader command, that action is executed in the virtual buffer. For example, if the h key is pressed when a Windows screen reader is running, focus will move to the next heading (h1 – h6) in the virtual buffer. Otherwise the key is passed back through to the browser, where it will be caught by the JavaScript that handles the shortcuts provided by the website.

“The trouble is that Windows screen readers utilise almost every available key for screen reader specific commands. This means that few keys make it past the screen reader to the browser, and consequently the JavaScript shortcuts are never triggered.”

[…]

“It is possible to tell both NVDA and Jaws to pass the next key through to the browser. In NVDA you press the NVDA modifier (insert) f2, followed by the key you want to pass through. In Jaws it’s the Jaws modifier (insert) 3, followed by the key to pass back to the browser. This is not a user-friendly way to interact with a website though, even assuming you know it’s possible in the first place.”

[…]

“An April 2015 update to Jaws 16 introduced a feature that attempts to solve the problem. The “Web application reserved keystrokes” setting tells Jaws to stop intercepting keys that have been reserved by the website. In the case of Facebook, Jaws would ignore the p as a command to move to the next paragraph, and send the key through to the browser where it would trigger the JavaScript shortcut for posting a status update.

“This feature does solve the problem (for Jaws users at least), but it’s something of a dirty hack. In order for Jaws to know which keys have been reserved by the website, it’s necessary to reference the shortcuts in the HTML. For example:

<div data-at-shortcutkeys={‘j’: ‘Key to navigate to next post’, ‘q’: ‘Key to place focus in chat’}></div>

“Jaws then has to scrape the DOM to get at that information. It’s a method that’s prone to error, and scraping the DOM is always much less efficient than querying the accessibility API.”

Show/hide revisions in Word 2013 - mike's web log
“I just installed Word 2013 and was disappointed to note that some of the long-standing keyboard shortcuts no longer work. For example, I’ve been using Alt+V,A for years (decades?) to invoke an ancient menu command to toggle between hiding and showing revision marks. Even when they introduced the ribbon and the menus went away, a lot of those old menu-command shortcuts still worked. And some still do; but this particular one no longer does, darn it.
[…]
“So, macro time. Using the macro recorder and some editing, I created the following macro and then mapped Alt+V,A to it. Macros are stored in Normal.dotm, so as long as that remains available I should be good. (Right?) However, I’ll have to update Normal.dotm on each machine on which I install Word 2013.”

(P.S. Here’s how you can add that macro to Word:

Apparently the secret to double mapping a key to both that key and a modifier (when pressed alone) is add “lazy: true” to the portion of the remapping with the modifier:

Modifier keys (Cmd, Option / Alt, Shift) aren't registered when used in combination with function keys · Issue #1160 · tekezo/Karabiner-Elements
Apparently Karabiner Elements might break built-in modifier+FunctionKey bindings when it’s running? (Potential solution: Enable “Unknown Device in Karabiner Element’s settings.)
“When using IntelliJ IDEA and the built in keyboard, modifier keys aren’t registered when used in combination with function keys. I have set the MacOS System Preference to always show function keys when using IntelliJ (System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Function Keys).”

Word: Keyboard shortcut for adding a comment | CyberText Newsletter
“I add a lot of comments to the documents I edit in Word. And I finally went hunting for a keyboard shortcut for adding a comment balloon. It’s obscure and not listed on the tooltip for the ‘New Comment’ icon on the Review ribbon in Word 2007 (or later). And even looking for it in the Word Options > Customize > Keyboard Shortcuts area for the Review Tab was an exercise in ‘Huh?’ But I found it!

“It’s Ctrl+Alt+M (that’s intuitive… Not!)

“If you go looking for it yourself in the keyboard shortcuts list, you’ll find it under InsertAnnotation in the list of Review tab commands”

Kaleidoscope-OneShot/README.md at master · keyboardio/Kaleidoscope-OneShot · GitHub
(This may be a Keyboardio thing, though.)
“One-shots are a new kind of behaviour for your standard modifier and momentary layer keys: instead of having to hold them while pressing other keys, they can be tapped and released, and will remain active until any other key is pressed. In short, they turn Shift, A into Shift+A, and Fn, 1 to Fn+1. The main advantage is that this allows us to place the modifiers and layer keys to positions that would otherwise be awkward when chording. Nevertheless, they still act as normal when held, that behaviour is not lost.

“Furthermore, if a one-shot key is tapped two times in quick succession, it becomes sticky, and remains active until disabled with a third tap. This can be useful when one needs to input a number of keys with the modifier or layer active, and still does not wish to hold the key down. If this feature is undesirable, unset the OneShot.double_tap_sticky property (see later).”

Typography Cheatsheet—A Comprehensive Guide to Smart Quotes, Dashes & Other Typographic Characters · Typewolf
This is a pretty great rundown of the keyboard shortcuts for single quotes, double quotes, en dashes, em dashes, daggers, double daggers, pilcrows, numero signs, ellipsis, degree symbols, and also the various forms of accented letters.

(It looks like the numero symbol—№— is only available through a keyboard shortcut if you enable the ABC Extended Keyboard.)

Workman/mac at master · ojbucao/Workman
“The idea of using 'dead' keys is based on assumption that pressing 2 easy keys is better than pressing 1 hard key. So to make it easier to type (programming) characters/symbols, we're going to press an easily reachable key (which will NOT output any character), release it and then press another easily reachable key to produce, say, @ character.

“In this layout the COMMA key is a dead key, pressing it will cause keyboard enter a state in which a single stroke of other keys will output a different character than normal state. After that single stroke, the keyboard returns to its normal state.

“For example, you'd press COMMA to enter the special state. Now if you strike the A key the output will be a forward slash "/". To see how to create other characters, refer to following images for more info.

“To produce the COMMA character itself, just hit SPACE after entering 'dead' state.”

ttscoff/KeyBindings: DefaultKeybindings.dict for Mac OS X
“DefaultKeyBinding.dict file (~/Library/KeyBindings/DefaultKeyBinding.dict) for Mac OS X, created by Brett Terpstra and based heavily on work done by Lri. Please note that these bindings won't work in all applications: TextWrangler and TextMate, for example, override these with their own settings. See Lri's gists and website for more coding madness.”

Microsoft Word keyboard shortcut to close the sidebar - Mac OS X Hints
“Microsoft Word 2011 does not, as far as I can tell, offer a means of assigning a keyboard shortcut to close the sidebar. The AppleScript described here provides that functionality, and sets a keyboard shortcut that will trigger it.

“Name the following Applescript ‘MicrosoftWordCloseSidebar.scpt’ (notice the reversed slash) and save it in ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/Word Script Menu Items.”

jasonrudolph/keyboard: ⌨ Toward a more useful keyboard
“To activate, push the s and d keys simultaneously and hold them down. Now you’re in (S)uper (D)uper Mode. It’s like a secret keyboard inside your keyboard. (Whoa.) It’s optimized for keeping you on the home row, or very close to it. Now you can:

“Use h / j / k / l for left/down/up/right respectively
“Use a for option (AKA alt)
“Use f for command
“Use space for shift
“Use a + j / k for page down / page up
“Use i / o to move to the previous/next tab
“Use u / p to go to the first/last tab (in most apps)
“Use a + h / l to move to previous/next word (in most apps)”

A Modern Space Cadet / Steve Losh
“The important thing I thought of one day is that it’s possible to divide keys on the keyboard into three groups:

“Keys you hold down to change how other keys behave, but that (usually) don’t do anything if you use them on their own (like Shift and Control).

“•Keys that you press and release but don’t want to ‘repeat’ as you hold them (like Escape or Insert).

“• Keys that you sometimes press and release, but sometimes want to repeat (like holding Space to insert a bunch of spaces, or Backspace to kill a bunch of characters).

“• Can you see where this is heading? The last group is pretty normal, but the first two groups are special. Specifically: there are two different ways to use them and they’re each only useful in one of those ways.

“This means that we can combine them onto a single key without losing any useful functionality!”

(Also:)
I forgot to mention that if you use this (and the Shift improvements below) you’ll probably want to change the “[Key Overlaid Modifier] Timeout” setting in the KR4MB preferences:

Key Overlaid Timeout

“This setting controls the maximum length of a keypress that will register as ‘single press.’ It’s easier to understand with an example. The default is 1000ms, which means that if you press and hold the Capslock key for 900ms and release it, it will count as Escape. If you hold it for 1001ms before releasing, it counts as pressing and releasing Control instead.

“If you’re finding that you’re sometimes holding Control out of habit and then releasing it, but it’s still firing as an Escape, you may want to turn this setting down to a lower value. I have mine set to 300ms.”
