Michael Tsai - Blog - How Kernel Prelinking Works on macOS Catalina (or Not)
(On updating kernel extensions being broken (as of 10.15.0))

“‘When you reboot or shut down your machine, launchd stops all processes. Then it remounts the system volume in read/write mode. This is possible because launchd has the entitlement Then it runs /var/install/shove_kernels to copy the new kernel.’

“But apparently this doesn’t actually work. So to update a kernel extension you need to disable System Integrity Protection or manually trigger a kernel update after booting into macOS Recovery.”

Michael Tsai - Blog - iTunes XML and Music in Catalina
(On iTunes breaking access through its XML file:)

“According to Apple, the new Music app, which replaces iTunes, removes support for automatically syncing playlists with third-party apps using XML. XML file support is a popular organizational feature for DJs who use it to sort tracks into playlists and utilize the “Share iTunes Library XML with other applications” option to seamlessly transmit data between apps.”

“A statement from Apple initially said XML would not be supported within the app. This story has also been updated to clarify that Music supports a new method for automatically syncing playlists that third-party apps can be updated to support.”

“In the macOS Catalina Music app, you can no longer have this file created automatically, but you can create it manually.

“To do this, choose File > Library > Export Library, name the file, and save it.”

Optimus Player
Marco Arment recommended this video player on ATP; he described it as being like VNC (in that it can play lots and lots of video formats) while also being more Mac-like than VNC.

Some thoughts after you tried this in October 2019:
• The app seems to be lacking in keyboard shortcuts. For instance, there appears to be no keyboard shortcut to zoom in or zoom out.
• As well, there’s no built-in keyboard shortcut to jump forward or jump backward. (Though with that being said, there are menu items for Jump Forward and Jump Backward, so you could always add keyboard shortcuts for those.)
• And oddly enough, if you choose Jump Forward or Jump Backward while a video is playing, the app does the jump—but it stops playing the video. Urgh.

Michael Tsai - Blog - Catalina “softwareupdate” Can Download Old Installers
(Perhaps this could be useful for building VMs or the like?)

“The softwareupdate command has gained a new option in Catalina:

% softwareupdate –fetch-full-installer

“Will download the latest ‘Install macOS’ application to this Mac’s /Applications folder. This is extremely useful for many admin tasks.

“The –fetch-full-installer flag has a sub-flag: –full-installer-version which allows you to download a specific version.

% softwareupdate –fetch-full-installer –full-installer-version 10.14.6

“Oddly, specifying either 10.14 or 10.14.0 works, but to download Catalina you need to specify 10.15 or else it will fail with an ‘Update not found’ error.”

macos - QuickLookSatellite MAC OS, High CPU Use - Super User
This post has some handy ideas about how you may be able to track down why ExternalQuickLookSatellite may be using lots of CPU.

“Troubleshooting steps:

“• See if there are any relevant log messages in or /var/log/system.log.

“• Use qlmanage -r to reset Quick Look client’s generator cache.

“• Run sudo opensnoop -n QuickLookSatellite-general to see if the process hangs after accessing some specific files. Or select QuickLookSatellite-general in Activity Monitor, press command-I, and see the Open Files and Ports tab.
“Temporarily delete Movie.qlgenerator, Audio.qlgenerator, or other qlgenerator bundles in

“• /System/Library/QuickLook, and run qlmanage -r.
“Temporarily remove applications shown by qlmanage -p | grep /Applications/.
“Disable quicklookd with launchctl unload

Latest macOS 10.14 Mojave freezing 1-2 seconds every few minutes (except mouse and sound) and then continues? - Ask Different
(There isn’t much in the way of replies here, but at least it’s not just you.)

“Since a week or two I am experiencing a very strange problem on my Macbook Pro running macOS 10.14 Mojave. I have all the latest updates installed (currently no new updates available).

“No matter what I’m doing, typing something in a browser or text editor or other application, watching a video on youtube or in VLC, every few minutes the whole system become non-responsive for like 1 or 2 seconds.

“No response to keyboard activity, video playback stops, mouse clicks don’t work. However if any sound is playing, that keeps on playing normally. And the mouse pointer still moves. When I was typing something, the letters don’t appear, but after 1-2 sec when the system continues, the letters still appear as if they were cached somehow.

“So when I’m watching a video (either streaming or just a local video file with VLC) the screen will suddenly stop i.e. the video picture appears ‘frozen’, but the sound continues. Then 1-2 sec later the video continues normally.”

BBAutoComplete: Mac Typing Enhancer
“BBAutoComplete adds word auto-completion to scriptable applications. You type the start of a word, press a key, and BBAutoComplete types the letters to complete the word. If BBAutoComplete guessed wrong, you can keep pressing the key to cycle through other possible completions. Other auto-completion utilities need to be taught the abbreviations and expansions that you use; BBAutoComplete avoids this hassle by automatically looking for expansions in the program’s open documents. This means that it always suggests completions that are relevant to your current task.”

Michael Tsai - Blog - Mojave Finder’s Preview Column Shouldn’t Prioritize Thumbnail Size
“Mojave puts a lot of information at your fingertips in Finder windows. However, the priority given to different components isn’t currently right. In particular, too much vertical space is reserved for QuickLook thumbnails (icons).

“Even in a very deep Finder window in Column mode, a shallow QuickLook thumbnail is given so much space that you have to scroll in order to be able to see that file’s metadata and the Quick Actions bar below it. This is in a Finder window on a 5K display at ‘looks like 2880 x 1620’ mode: it gets much worse on a laptop.”

And then one of the commenters replied with this tip:

“Try selecting a file type in the Finder and choosing ‘Show Preview Options’ from the View menu. It has checkboxes to show/hide filetype-specific metadata as well as the Quick Actions.”

Michael Tsai - Blog - on macOS 10.15
On Catalina’s new Music app to replace iTunes:
“As I dig deeper, I find that a lot has been simplified. There are tasks I had described in my book that had multiple steps that are simpler, and there were often several ways to do something, whereas, now, there is generally just one. I find myself cutting large sections of my book’s content because of this simplification.

“I will miss the column browser; I used this tool constantly to navigate my library by Genre, then Artist, then Album. With Artist, Album, and Genres view, it’s hard to get the big picture. If you have, say, 135 Grateful Dead albums, you need to scroll through the Grateful Dead entry to find the one you want, whereas in the column browser, I could quickly scan a concise list. Or when I wanted to listen to Kind of Blue, it took a few clicks, a quick scan, and I found the album.

“The other feature I’ll miss is that in Songs view – that’s the one where you see items in a list – you can no longer display album artwork. I used that extensively, together with the column browser, as you can see above, because it’s a quick way to scan content to find what I want.”

Finder security errors opening documents: a summary – The Eclectic Light Company
“In certain circumstances, trying to open a document in macOS 10.8 and later can result in a security error and refusal. This article summarises knowledge about this issue: how it arises, what it means, and how to work around it.

“This issue only affects documents for which the default app has been set to a different one, either in the Finder’s Get Info dialog or by some other means. If you never use that feature, then it should never trouble you on your Mac.”

“If you're running SuperDuper! under Mojave, you need to add it to Full Disk Access. SuperDuper! will prompt you and refuse to run until this permission has been granted.

@Due to the nature of Full Disk Access, it has to be enabled before SuperDuper is launched--that's why we don't wait for you to add it and automatically proceed.”

Arcade Spirits on Steam
“Arcade Spirits is a romantic visual novel that follows an alternative timeline where the 1983 video game crash never occurred. It's 20XX and you've just started a new job at the Funplex game arcade. Who will you meet along the way? Will you find the romance you're seeking?”

(@kit_flowerstorm recommended this, saying—)
“I’m biased (I helped with #accessibility in Arcade Spirits and the dev team is great) but this game made me feel hopeful. Even with the protagonist being so used to frozen meals & not wanting to get their hopes up. If you need a smile, check this out.”

GoToFile: Find any file. Instantly.
(Well—this looks kinda neat.)
“Type a few characters and GoToFile will show matching items instantaneous. Fuzzy Search means you can leave out characters and type only the more pregnant ones. It’s just the order that matters. Typing upper-case characters will favour items with those characters at word boundaries. GoToFile can search by file name or by complete path.”

Restoring Deleted or Previous Versions of Files – Help Desk
To restore files from Backblaze—

[Main tip: For the dropdowns for “Files backed up from” and “[Files backed up] to,” only change the “To” dropdown if you need to restore files from a certain date.]

“First, sign into your account and navigate to the View/Restore Files page and scroll down.

“To locate files that have been deleted or removed from your computer, often you need to change the ‘Files Backed Up From’ drop downs on the View/Restore Files page. Leave the ‘From’ side on ‘Beginning of Backup’ and set the ‘To’ side to a period of time when the files had not yet been deleted or removed, such as ‘7 days ago’.”
