jwz: Oh, Hypnowheel, how I loathe you
As a potential Mac gremlin:

“I had similar issues with a 2012 non-Retina MacBook Pro. Mysterious beach-balling that seemed vaguely related to disk IO, minimal CPU usage, no memory pressure. Disk checks all looked fine, RAM checks were fine.

“Turned out that the SATA cable was going bad. Replaced that and everything immediately worked fine. This is a very common issues with MacBooks of that era and it's really hard to diagnose.

“Typically you'd expect a desktop computer to have a much more robust SATA cable than the whispy, brittle thing in a MacBook, but I'm not sure for an iMac. Might be worth looking into anyway.”

HDCP Converters and HDCP Strippers: A solution to non-compliant HDCP devices?
"An HDCP stripper box is placed between your playback device (e.g. Blu-ray player, etc) and your non-HDCP compliant display. It then behaves in a similar manner to a secure device. In order to achieve this, HDCP strippers use the same HDCP chips built into high definition displays. The HDCP source will see a compliant device, so after the authentication process, it will simply proceed to deliver its signal to the HDCP stripper, which will then create the non-restricted copy to forward to the sink device.

"This means that a stripper box can effectively enable HDTV sources like Blu-ray Discs, to work at full high definition resolution with equipment using either analog or 'unprotected' DVI and HDMI inputs."

As fans await update for 3-year-old Mac mini, Apple classifies mid-2011 models 'obsolete'
"The vintage and obsolete products page was updated to reflect the fact that the mid-2011 Mac mini is no longer supported by the company, meaning services and repairs are no longer offered.

"Apple guarantees parts and service for products 5 years after it is no longer manufactured. After that, they become obsolete worldwide, with the exception of in California and Turkey, where laws require another two years of support.

"Because of that, the mid-2011 Mac mini remains vintage in the U.S. and Turkey, but is obsolete elsewhere."

Mac mini server 2011 - remedy for the loud fan? | MacRumors Forums
"Trust me the delta fan is noisy. I have one in a box and it was removed because it was noisy. The other fan is quieter. Honestly though I would replace the thermal paste and see if that helps."

HDCP issue with Apple 23" Aluminum HD Cinema Di... | Official Apple Support Communities
"Starting with the Early '09 Mac mini all video ports are strictly HDCP compliant. That was not the case in the past, which is probably why your previous minis worked. Apple does not have a choice in the matter, the content owners do, so some Apple legacy products get left behind."

Essential Hardware for My Mac-Based Business — Katie Floyd
"Because I have a lot of documents that come into my life I need a reliable workhouse scanner so the iX500 was a no brainer. One feature I particularly appreciate is the ability to scan wirelessly to my Mac. Because of the way my office is arranged it’s not convenient to keep the ScanSnap on my desk physically connected to my computer. I keep the ScanSnap on a credenza out of the way but easily accessible."

And this might come in handy for mounting a Mac mini under the counter or something:
"HIDEit Wall Mount - Desk space is at a premium and I wanted to keep my cable clutter to a minimum. I found the HIDEit mount that would allow me to mount my Mac mini either to a wall, under a desk, or - as I choose - to the back of my monitor. The HIDEit mount is VESA compatible using 75mm or 100mm pattern, meaning the four screw holes match to the holes in a back of any VESA compatible monitor. My Mac mini is tucked out of the way out and off my desk."

Is my computer compatible with QuickerTek’s Airport Cards?
QuickerTek makes various replacement Airport cards for Macs. It looks like their MCard 2.0 might just be compatible with the 2007 Mac mini (A1176) that’s in the kitchen.

SOLVED: Replace the wifi card with a current 802.11ac card? - Mac Mini Late 2012 - iFixit
"Currently there is no replacement for the internal WiFi card, but there are alternatives.

"I would hope that Apple doesn't change the Mac Mini style and releases a new Mac Mini with WiFi ac support in a similar minicard style as the 2011/2012 models, so I can order a spare part to replace the existing one.

Edit:

"QuickerTek used to make a WiFi ac product called uCard which was an internal replacement for the AirPort card within the Mac Mini, however it was discontinued before I had even heard of it. :("

Review: miniStack MAX Completes Our Mac mini HTPC - The Digital Media Zone | The Digital Media Zone
"The miniStack MAX is taller—or perhaps better described as thicker—than the mini by about 50%. The deep dimples surrounding the SD card and disc slots lack the clean, understated lines of Apple’s now-retired slot drive openings. And the white activity LED, designed to reflect off of a supporting surface, seems out of place beside the mini’s pin-hole power indicator. It’s not necessary bad design…just a bit inelegant next to the mini." (This is that DVD drives that’s designed to pair with the Mac mini.)
