Sign In with Apple: Goodbye Account Management - MacStories
“When apps update to adopt Sign In with Apple, I suspect many users’ initial thoughts will be some variation of what immediately popped into my mind after trying it for the first time: ‘Where has this been all my life?’”

Apple Maps in iOS 13: Sights Set on Google – MacStories
“One compelling new feature of favorites is called Share ETA. With every favorite you save, you can configure automatic ETA sharing that will kick off whenever you start driving or walking navigation to that favorite. So for example, if you set up ETA sharing for home with your partner, they’ll receive a notification every time you navigate there. This notification includes your current ETA, and the recipient can open it to see your current location, the route you’ll be taking, and a live-updating ETA inside of Maps.”

CalZones Review – MacStories
“CalZones, available today on the App Store as a Universal app, is based on a simple, ingenious concept that, to the best of my knowledge, has never been done on the App Store before: the app combines a time zone viewer with a calendar client, enabling you to compare times across multiple cities as well as view and create calendar events that display start/end times in multiple formats. By fusing time zone comparisons and calendar events into one product, Smith was able to create an app that is greater than the sum of its parts because it solves a problem that neither traditional world clocks nor calendar clients could fix before.”

A Complete List of All the Magazines Available for Apple News+ in the U.S. (So Far) – MacStories
“To create this list, I manually opened each magazine and annotated whether its latest issue was using Apple News Format or the standard, PDF-like format. Magazines that support Apple News Format are labeled with ‘(ANF)’ in the list. The split between Apple News Format magazines and standard magazines is fairly even: 125 magazines are using the richer Apple News Format in their latest issue, while 126 of them are relying on traditional PDFs (likely the format the old Texture service was using).”

Using a Twitter Saved Search to Read Replies, Mentions, and Quoted Tweets in a Single View – MacStories
“It’s not a perfect fix, but I’ve come up with a decent workaround to view a single timeline of replies, mentions, and retweets with comments in Twitter for iOS by using a custom search syntax. To open this view, all I need to do is open this saved search in the Twitter app:

“to:viticci OR url:viticci OR ‘@viticci’ -from:viticci”

My Must-Have Mac Apps, 2018 Edition – MacStories - page 4
“iMazing. I use iMazing primarily to keep my iOS devices backed up. It works over WiFi or a Lightning cable connected to my Mac and, unlike iTunes, has the benefit of creating incremental backups, which make it easy to roll back to a particular stable version of an iOS setup. iMazing can also store your iOS apps on your Mac for faster future installation and backup purposes. Finally, once in a while, I have a reason to dig into the data stored in an app, which is something that can be done with iMazing’s file system browser.”

AutoSleep 6: Effortless Sleep Tracking More Accessible Than Ever – MacStories
“If you’ve followed MacStories for long, you probably already know that AutoSleep is one of our favorite sleep tracking apps on iOS. The app stands out for offering a frictionless, effort-free experience. Where other sleep trackers may require you to start and stop sleep tracking manually, AutoSleep takes the burden of remembering those tedious tasks off your plate. If you wear an Apple Watch to sleep, the app will automatically detect your sleep patterns even without a separate Watch app installed. If you don’t have a Watch, or simply don’t wear it to bed, the app will track your sleep through other methods. Whatever your habits are, AutoSleep has you covered.”

Apple’s Emoji Search Is Bad – MacStories
“Prior to macOS Sierra’s release in September 2016, emoji search for Mac was the opposite: general terms wouldn’t return any results - but if you knew the emoji name you could get it to appear 100% of the time. This is no longer the case.

“I do wonder if an internal effort to make these types of search and prediction tools better in the longer term is making them worse for users in the short term.”

A Roundup of CES Home Automation and Apple Accessory Announcements – MacStories
"The Instinct is a smart light switch, but that's not all it is: it's also a full-fledged Amazon Alexa device. No, I don't mean that it's Alexa-compatible (though it is) – I mean Alexa lives inside the switch, ready for your commands. When you use the trigger word, a blue Echo-like ring will light up on the Instinct to show that it's listening, and you'll be able to have the device do anything a normal Alexa device can. Add in the Instinct's motion detecting and ambient light sensing capabilities, and this is easily the most impressive smart light switch I've ever seen. The Instinct will be available sometime in 2018; pricing is unknown.”

"In addition to updating its iOS app, Philips said it is introducing an all-new Mac app in Q2 2018 that will run in the background and allow its lighting system to synchronize with what you’re doing on your computer. Aquarelo: A Beautifully-Designed Mac Color Utility – MacStories
"There are a seemingly endless number of ways to represent colors. Whether you’re a professional designer or developer, or someone who just wants to update a website template, you’ve undoubtedly come across several. The trouble with so many different formats is that it guarantees that at some point, the color value you have won’t be the one you require. Aquarelo is a beautifully-designed new Mac app that cuts through the thicket of formats to help you find the colors you want and convert them to the format you need."

Track Hyper-Local Weather Conditions With the Netamo Weather Station – MacStories
“I’ve been very pleased with the Netatmo Weather Station since I started using it almost two months ago. It may be unnecessary, but I enjoy knowing that the weather conditions I’m seeing in the app are what’s happening immediately outside my back door. It’s also been interesting to observe trends in the data I’ve collected, like rising CO2 levels when we are cooking dinner or dropping humidity levels during the recent cold weather in Chicago, which alerted me to the fact that the humidifier on my furnace has died. I’ve also been pleasantly surprised by the quality of its companion app. If you want up to the minute, hyper-local weather data or enjoy collecting and pouring over weather data, I highly recommend the Netatmo Weather station."

Automating Your Holiday Lights Inside and Out – MacStories
(This post offers some decent tips on how to set up HomeKit automation using scenes and groups.)
"To add to the confusion, what I first unsuccessfully tried to accomplish with a Scene, is possible with a Group. Unlike Scenes, which allow device-level control over each accessory in the Scene, settings for Groups apply to the set of devices only. For example, if you include a Hue light and power outlet in a Scene, you can set the brightness of the light and its color temperature while also setting the outlet’s power state to on or off. If you include the same accessories in a Group, however, you can only control whether the light and outlet are on or off because that’s the only setting the two have in common. The advantage of a Group over a Scene though is that Siri can turn a Group on and off."

With Launcher 2.0, I’m Rethinking My Notification Center Widgets – MacStories
"The utility of multiple widgets, though, is revealed when you consider the new availability settings to show a set of launchers only at specific times or places. Under Widget Settings, you'll find two new preferences:

"• When To Show: Always; on specific days; All Day; From…Until;
• Where To Show: Everywhere; within location; outside locations.

"The idea here is that Launcher can provide a dynamic collection of launchers that intelligently show up only when you need them. For instance, you could set up a widget with shortcuts for your commute in the morning; a widget for when you're at work and want to quickly get in touch with colleagues; shortcuts for the gym; or perhaps you want to hide all your work launchers during the weekend, leaving room for music launchers and sports apps. All of this is possible with Launcher 2.0, with a solid implementation to boot."

Why I’m Considering Bear as a Notes App Replacement – MacStories
"It's a small detail, but I like how Bear makes iCloud sync less invisible than Apple's apps by indicating where the last editing session took place. In the information panel (accessed by tapping the 'i' button in the top right corner of a note), you'll find a 'Last Editing Device' field underneath statistics for the current note. Seeing which device synced the last edit is useful to confirm which changes have been saved; you can also view Settings > Status to check when the last complete iCloud sync happened."

Testing Apple’s 29W USB-C Power Adapter and iPad Pro Fast Charging – MacStories
On the new USB Power Delivery spec:
"As you can see in the chart above, the results are clear: fast charging with the new 29W adapter trumps regular charging with the 12W model in every test. Here are a few more notable tidbits to further put the two adapters in perspective:
• It'd take 1 hour and 33 minutes for the 29W adapter to charge an iPad Pro from 0% to 80%; the 12W model would need 3.5 hours.
• In 10 minutes with the screen turned off, the 29W adapter charged the iPad Pro by 9.7%; the 12W adapter charged it by 2.9%."

How I Control My Mac with Automatic + IFTTT + Dropbox – MacStories
"The other day, Federico asked about why people use web services such as IFTTT. I have a few of these that I use frequently, but the geekiest one is this: controlling my Mac with my car.

"More specifically, when I turn my car’s ignition on or off in the parking lot at my office, Automatic triggers an IFTTT recipe, creating a text file in a special Dropbox folder which is monitored by launchd[1] and runs a shell script depending on which file is created.

"It sounds more complicated than it is. No, really."
