vnc - How to prevent RealVNC from scaling the display based on windows scaling option? - Super User
“I had about the same problem you are facing. I am using a laptop and an external monitor. Since the laptop screen is small and high-res, I use the windows scaling option only on it. But RealVNC applies this ‘correction’ even when using the external monitor. If I set it up to 100% scaling (session resolution being the same as monitor resolution), the screen is not filled, and if I let automatic scaling, then the screen is all blurred.

“Anyhow, I tried TightVNC and it does the same thing as RealVNC. The only client I found to work was TigerVNC.”

This post (presumably from @marcedwards) offers some pointers for Retina-ish monitors that one can run without scaling.

ImageSize - Batch Resize and Convert Photos
If you should ever need to batch resize a bunch of photos or screenshots, this may be the way to go—
a) its ratings on the Mac App Store are broadly very positive (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imagesize-resize-photos/id1197449714?mt=12)
b) And it so happens that you already own this and you have it installed. So it should be ready to go on your system already.

Sub-pixel text rendering
“Higher pixel density displays also negate the need for sub-pixel antialiasing. Apple’s Retina displays really are the final nail in the coffin for sub-pixel antialiasing. If you don’t believe me, feel free to use Skala View (the free iOS app) to load this image onto your iPhone. Make sure it’s set up with the home button icon facing the home button. I’d be surprised if you can tell the difference between the blocks of text.”

Marco Arment on Twitter: "Also, LCD Font Smoothing should be off by default on Retina machines. I should file a bug in the name of good taste."
(Not sure how legit this claim is, but it’s interesting.)

Why is WindowServer consuming 48% of my CPU? | Official Apple Support Communities
(On reducing WindowServer’s CPU usage:)
"I had a similar issue on Sierra, and after some testing it seems setting the scaling back to 'Default for display' improved it by 15%-25%.   I am running dual GTX 970s on 6 monitors ( 6x Samsung U28D590 4K with NVIDIA web drivers on Sierra 10.12.3), and I am not sure why any scaling would have anything to do with software processes, rendering should all be done on the hardware, but there is significant improvement after changing it."

Fusion 8 with Retina Display - wonky mouse | VMware Communities
"EDIT: I found that unchecking Automatically adjust user interface size in the virtual machine and letting Windows run in 100% scaling (i.e. letting VM run on full retina resolution without UI scaling) will resolve a lot of the pauses and choppy mouse movement issues. The problem is that it's nigh-unusable unless you have very sharp eyes. Once I manually adjust the scaling to be 200% (i.e. making it the same as OS X default retina scaling), the problem comes back.

"So the root cause seems to be on Fusion 8's handling of scaling within Windows. Much as the majority of Windows apps suck at HiDPI scaling, it is not very usable without it. And not turning on retina option in VM makes the screen somewhat blurry."

Sizes | Apptorium
"Sizes is a great app that helps you in resizing images for Retina display. The only thing you have to do is to drop your files on the icon and wait a second. You don't even need to name your files properly - Sizes does it for you. And of course you can change the image suffix. Really simple." (This actually works pretty well.)

(5) How can I get my retina Mac to not take screenshots that are too big? - Quora
"What this [Automator action] does is set up an action that when an image file whose name begins with "Screen Shot" is written to the Desktop folder, a copy is made to the Pictures folder and the resolution cut to 50%. Every time you take a screenshot, a duplicate with 50% the resolution is created in the Pictures folder."

Six Colors: Resize and upload images with Acorn and Transmit
"This means that I need to upload two images to my web server every time. For horizontal images, this means one that’s 680 pixels wide and a 2x version that’s 1360 pixels wide. As you might imagine, that’s a lot of resizing and uploading, and I wanted to automate it."

"The bottomline is that heavy compression doesn’t affect the final image as much as you would expect. This is because of the greater amount of pixels in the Retina image, compression artifacts are scaled down and therefore almost unnoticeable."
