No sound after upgrading to macOS Mojave — here’s your fix
(A potential fix for audio issues on macOS Mojave:)

“So easiest test was: trying to connect to my bluetooth headphones. This did work so I assumed it must be some stupid software issue — and here we go!

“If you are experiencing the same behaviour I have an easy fix for you!

“Open your terminal (press CMD + Space to open spotlight search, and type terminal and hit return) and then copy & paste this command:

“sudo kill ps -ax | grep 'coreaudiod' | grep 'sbin' |awk '{print $1}'”

Restaurant noise levels are climbing. Here’s how to fight back. - Vox
“But here’s the thing: Loud restaurants aren’t just irksome — they’re a public health threat, especially for the people who work at or regularly patronize them. Being exposed to noise levels above 70 and 80 decibels — which many restaurants boast these days — causes hearing loss over time, Gail Richard, past president of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, told me. This kind of hearing loss is ‘preventable, but it’s also irreparable,’ she added.”

Public Roads - Living With Noise , July/August 2003 -
"Sound is composed of many frequencies, some of which may affect one person more than another. Because engineers measure sound in decibels (dB) on a logarithmic scale, when two sources of sound, each measuring 70 dB(A), are added together, the resulting sound level is not 140 dB(A) but 73 dB(A). The (A) refers to a weighting scale that approximates the manner in which humans hear higher frequencies better than lower frequencies.

"Levels of highway traffic noise typically range from 70 to 80 dB(A) at a distance of 15 meters (50 feet) from the highway. These levels affect a majority of people, interrupting concentration, increasing heart rates, or limiting the ability to carry on a conversation. The noise generated by a conversation between two people standing 1 meter (3 feet) apart is usually in the range of 60-65 dB(A). Most people prefer the noise levels in their homes to be in the 40-45 dB(A) range, similar to the levels found in a small office. A reduction of sound from 65 to 55 dB(A) reduces the loudness of the sound by one half, while a reduction of sound from 65 to 45 dB(A) results in a loudness reduction of one quarter."

How to Know Which Central Air Conditioner Is the Quietest – Cool Today
"If you can’t find an AC’s sound level, look for certain features that imply quietness, including:

"• Variable speed fan — The indoor unit’s fan can operate at different speeds depending on your comfort needs. This improves comfort, lowers energy bills and, of course, lets the AC run at quieter speeds.
• Compressor insulation — A separate compartment or enclosure that covers the compressor to reduce the outdoor unit’s noise.
• Noise-reducing fan blades — A fan blade design designed to reduce the outdoor unit’s noise.
Insulated base pan — An addition of a pan underneath the air conditioner designed to reduce noise and resist corrosion."

"Has anyone else had an issue with not getting audible alert notifications of calendar events?
I have banners turned on in Settings (banners are displaying) and the Play sound for notifications checked.
Volume is all the way up. Audio is confirmed to be working fine.
Confirmed that I have a functioning alert sound selected.
Anything else I should be trying?"

Calendar does not play alert sounds | Official Apple Support Communities
"When the default Alert in Calendar for Events is set to 'At the time of event' and Notifications is set to 'play sounds for Calendar alerts', the Alert sound plays when Calendar notifications are displayed on the desktop screen.  However if the default for Calendar Alerts is set to None  and then an alert is manually set in a Calendar event itself, the alert will display on screen but no sound will play even though Notifications is set to play sound for Calendar alerts."

Understanding STC and Measuring Sound Loss - Soundproofing Company
(This is actually a pretty great write-up on STC.)
"In short, STC gives you a rough idea how much sound a wall, for example, might stop. STC, Sound Transmission Class, is the most common sound reduction measurement in use. As common as this measurement is, it is quite limited and should not be totally relied upon for real world soundproofing expectations."

Sun Sound Windows | Soundproof Window Inserts
(This is the company that did the soundproof windows for Wade and Pam’s house:)
"Is Tinting Available?

"Yes. Both bronze or gray are usually available.
It is important to note that tinted glass warms up quite a bit in the direct sun. Although it will effectively block infrared rays (IR) from entering your interior space, the hot surface of the glass will still transfer heat to the interior space. Therefore, we recommend solar screens instead of tinted glass where HOAs allow them. Installed on the exterior of the window, solar screens block infrared rays (IR) before they ever get past your primary window. Or, 3M makes a variety of films for your existing windows."

new message sounds (two) in 31.3.0 | Thunderbird Support Forum | Mozilla Support
"Is there a way to stop the generic sound from playing, or is this a bug in this Thunderbird version that needs to be fixed by Mozilla?”
"I seem to have fixed this by unchecking "Show an alert" in preferences (under "General"). It was the alert that was making the generic sound."

How do I change the "new messages" sound? (Thunderbird 31.3.0 on MacBookPro running OSX 10.9.5) | Thunderbird Support Forum | Mozilla Support
On setting Thunderbird’s new mail sound:
"I followed the instructions at to change the "new messages" sound. It does play when I click on "Play" in the Preferences pane. However, when new mail comes in, it plays the default sound. So why is it ignoring the Preference?”
"I figured it out. The default sound was coming from Notification Center. I went into System Preferences -> Notifications, selected Thunderbird, and deselected "Play sound for notifications". That stopped the default sound and allowed my selected sound (in the Thunderbird -> Preferences -> General panel) to play by itself.”
"I take it back. While deselecting "Play sound for notifications" in System Preferences -> Notifications did stop the default sound, after a while it also stopped the sound I selected."

Triple pane vs Double Pane Windows - Efficiency, noise, price, quality
"It is VERY common for replacement window salespeople to tell folks that windows with triple pane glass will reduce noise in the home.  In fact, switching from double pane to triple pane has a very small impact on sound.  You’d be much better served by going with laminated glass.  We go into more depth on this in our sound transmission post.  The long and the short of it is if you’re buying triple pane windows to reduce noise you’re overspending."
