Latest macOS 10.14 Mojave freezing 1-2 seconds every few minutes (except mouse and sound) and then continues? - Ask Different
(There isn’t much in the way of replies here, but at least it’s not just you.)

“Since a week or two I am experiencing a very strange problem on my Macbook Pro running macOS 10.14 Mojave. I have all the latest updates installed (currently no new updates available).

“No matter what I’m doing, typing something in a browser or text editor or other application, watching a video on youtube or in VLC, every few minutes the whole system become non-responsive for like 1 or 2 seconds.

“No response to keyboard activity, video playback stops, mouse clicks don’t work. However if any sound is playing, that keeps on playing normally. And the mouse pointer still moves. When I was typing something, the letters don’t appear, but after 1-2 sec when the system continues, the letters still appear as if they were cached somehow.

“So when I’m watching a video (either streaming or just a local video file with VLC) the screen will suddenly stop i.e. the video picture appears ‘frozen’, but the sound continues. Then 1-2 sec later the video continues normally.”

Does this Dewalt corded drill have multi-speeds? - Home Improvement Stack Exchange
“If you see the letters VSR in a description for a drill, that means it is variable speed. More to the point VSR stands for:

possessives - "My wife and I's seafood collaboration dinner" - English Language & Usage Stack Exchange
(This is a pretty definitive answer to how grouped possessives are formed in English—namely “my wife’s and my XYZ” rather than “my wife and I’s XYZ.”)

“Both approaches are linguistically sound, but only one is accepted as a standard; namely, ‘my wife’s and my’. Standard forms are chosen somewhat arbitrarily. This means that they don’t have some sort of objective ‘correctness’; it also means that you can’t argue for the correctness of a non-standard form based on logic. There are many logical ways to convey ideas, and one was chosen to be the standard. If you wish to communicate in a context where adherence to formal/standard rules is beneficial, then you should choose the standard form.”

Best webcam to use with Skype and a Mac mini? - Ask Different
(It looks like cameras that support UVC can work on macOS?)
“Most modern USB webcams support a generic interface called UVC (Universal Video Class). OSX supports most UVC drivers out-of-the-box (true for me in Snow Leopard) so sometimes there aren’t even any third-party drivers to install. (In fact, most third-party webcam ‘drivers’ only install useless add-ons that bloat your system.)

“Logitech is very good at providing compliant UVC devices, so they’re a good starting point.”

OSX Sierra - WindowServer process hangs, high CPU, whole OS freezes - Ask Different
“Wow I accidentally debugged this myself.

“It seems after all that my problem was actually a side effect caused by the real issue which was: macOS Sierra changed how it handled defaults write NSGlobalDomain KeyRepeat -int 0, it no longer supported a zero value, and I had it changed to zero in Yosemite or El Capitan to make the cursor advance faster. To reset it back to normal parameters I changed the keyboard typing delays in the System Preferences > Keyboard back to fastest (both sliders were dragged to the left side).”

ms office - Always show text cursor while moving it in Word - Ask Different
“The text cursor, or caret, is normally in the visible form in applications at the start of its display cycle. It then goes to the flashing sequence once you stop moving it with arrow keys or typing. However, in Word 2011 I’m constantly frustrated because the cursor disappears, or defaults to the invisible state of the flashing sequence, while I’m typing or moving it. This makes it painfully difficult to edit text without using the mouse. As I write this post and keep going back to word I’m noticing that it seems erratic as to what behavior it’s acting. I think that it stays in whichever state it was last in, which 50% of the time is invisible.

“I’ve since changed the blink rate to 200ms via changing the default in Word’s plist file. This helps a little in my frustration, but the behavior really needs fixed.”

Does a bathroom exhaust fan have to vent to the outside? - Home Improvement Stack Exchange
"So, it is required by code in virtually all jurisdictions that ventilation fans terminate in a vent cap on the outside of the building. There should be no leaks in the vent line that could allow the humid air to escape into an interior space. Bringing the vent to an existing attic vent isn't enough, because the air can still mix before it leaves the space and form condensation. You must either seal the vent line to that roof vent (which would also require you to have enough roof vents that the attic can still ‘breathe' with the loss of the one you sealed up), or cut a new hole through the roof for a new vent cap."

music - iTunes: Move files off a network drive - Ask Different
This answer may well have the canonical steps for migrating one's iTunes library.

In short:
• In iTunes → Preferences → Advanced
- Make sure “Keep iTunes Media folder organized” is unchecked.
- Make sure "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" is unchecked.
- Make sure “Share iTunes Library XML” is checked.
• Quit iTunes.
• Go to ~/Music/iTunes/
• Delete "iTunes Library.itl”
• Locate "iTunes Library.xml" and/or "iTunes Music Library.xml". Then delete whichever file is older.
• Edit the remaining XML file with a text editor (like TextMate).
• Make a copy of that XML file and rename that copy to whichever XML file you just deleted.
• Use this Terminal command to create a dummy (0-byte) version of "iTunes Library.itl":
touch ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Library.itl
• Lastly, start iTunes normally. It may chug for a while, but that’s okay.

(Note to self: You also created a Word version of these directions:

macos - Disabling startup items that run on their own - Ask Different
“While in the past it was easy to look in the aforementioned folders for startup launch information (per Dan), this new sandboxed model, while theoretically safer operationally, hides the an app's (or Trojan's?) startup capability from all normal users and most superusers who know to look in the system directories. Finding these hidden Login Items now has become a PITA (pain in the app) with either grep'ing your way through the Applications folder or manually open app bundles looking in /Contents/Library/ for a "LoginItems" folder and it's contents.

display - Is there a way to control the clock speed of the GT 650M GPU in a Retina Macbook Pro from OS X? - Ask Different
"If you don't need to use the MBP screen while using the external monitor you can disable it using a small magnet.

"A small magnet placed on the left side of the MBP keyboard, more or less above where the SD card reader is placed, will make it think that the lid is closed. The GPU will need to do less work to drive just one screen (the external) and use less power, and with the lid still open the airflow will be beter.

"I use this on a 2011 MBP, other versions may need to have the magnet placed at different places for it to detect a closed lid. And if you try this, please use the smallest magnet available."
