Report outlines recommendations for action on caste and gender justice in Nepal (IDSN News)
A comprehensive report on the status of Dalit women in Nepal has been released by IDSN member the Feminist Dalit Organization Nepal (FEDO) with support from IDSN and Womankind.

The report details the situation, challenges and recommendations within poverty, education, health, safety, political participation, Dalit women in the media and Dalit girl children in Nepal.

It is clear from the report that while progress has been made, immediate and sustained action targeted at Dalit women in Nepal is crucial.

UN women’s committee raises concern over intersecting caste, religious and gender discrimination in Pakistan (IDSN News)
Dalit women in Pakistan are at high risk of human rights abuses due to intersecting caste, religious and gender discrimination. In the Concluding Observations of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) review of Pakistan, the Committee recommends that the state addresses intersecting discrimination directly and note concern over the persistence of abductions and forced conversions, stereotypes and insufficient disaggregated data.

In response to the 250 recommendations, which India received during its third review of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism of the Human Rights Council on 4 May 2017, the Government of India (GoI) accepted nine recommendations related to caste-based discrimination.i The accepted
recommendations, were made by a cross-regional group of states: USA, Peru, Argentina, France, Germany, Mexico, Kyrgyzstan, and two from the Holy See (see the recommendations in the document).

UN HRC 36th Session - IDSN comments and recommendations
In the context of the reports being presented at the 36th UN Human Rights Council session (11– 29 September 2017), IDSN is urging states to pay particular attention to caste-based discrimination being included on a par with other forms of discrimination. Especially in thematic HRC resolutions on rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, contemporary forms of slavery as well as discussions of UPR reports on India and the UK.

Report: The challenges of Access to Justice and Social and Medical support for Survivors of Rape and Sexual Abuse (Jan Sahas, 2017)
IDSN member Jan Sahas have released a report from the recently held “National Consultation on the Challenges of Access to Social and Medical support and Justice for Survivors of Rape and Sexual Abuse”. The consultation discussed the role of police, medical, judiciary and family to ensure justice for survivors of rape and sexual abuse. The report outlines perspectives, key concerns and offers a number of concrete recommendations for action. Survivors, representatives of relevant government departments and commissions, policy makers and representatives from the judiciary, civil society, media, lawyers, and UN agencies participated in the consultation.

IDSN urges post 2015 agenda to specifically address caste-affected groups
IDSN is concerned about the failure to recognise and specifically identify caste-affected groups, in the focus area document proposed in relation to the post 2015 development agenda.
