How to tell the difference between a React component and a design pattern — Robin Rendle | CSS-Tricks
“It’s easy to see every problem or design as a new component or a mix of currently existing components. But instead, we should make components that can slot into each other neatly, rather just continue to make more components.”

Opinion: Put down the self-help books. Resilience is not a DIY endeavour - The Globe and Mail
“The science of resilience is clear: The social, political and natural environments in which we live are far more important to our health, fitness, finances and time management than our individual thoughts, feelings or behaviours.”

Galen, the second-century physician who ministered to Roman emperors, believed his medical treatments were effective. “All who drink of this treatment recover in a short time,” he wrote, “except those whom it does not help, who all die. It is obvious, therefore, that it fails only in incurable cases.” This is the way of the billion-dollar self-help industry: You are to blame when the guru’s advice does not produce the expected outcome...

Technologies of the Self: A Short Introduction • Chad Mazzola
I had a passing thought several years ago about how if the zeitgeist of 1968 could be expressed as “LSD and the Grateful Dead”, then 2018 was “modafinil and podcasts at 1.5x speed.”

If we contrast the stereotyped “1968” experience — a cosmic consciousness free associating between disparate ideas, the boundaries of the self slipping away — and contrast it with “2018” — a hyper-focus on instrumental knowledge and achieving social and economic mastery through personal productivity — the yawning chasm between various modes of inner experience becomes apparent.

The Stoic tradition emphasized mastery over oneself as the primarily goal of a philosophical education. The tools at the Roman’s disposal — reading and writing — were particularly good for this practice of careful concern over one’s thoughts and actions.

In contrast, the demands of productivity and the constant background noise of stress that shapes the lives of modern office workers led Alain de Botton to claim that “[o]ffice civilisation could not be feasible without the hard take-offs and landings effected by coffee and alcohol.”

Green New Deal: How About A “Low Tech New Deal”? – Low Technology Institute
“While our way of living would be unrecognizable in some regards, the biggest change would have to be our outlook on life and what it means to live a good one. Warning: this will not be easy or popular.”

Hiring the best doesn't always mean hiring the right people
hire for diversity; hedge your bets; good points contra meritocracy

“[If you hire the quantified ‘best’ it] all but guarantees not creating the best team. Ranking people by common criteria produces homogeneity. And when biases creep in, it results in people who look like those making the decisions. That’s not likely to lead to breakthroughs.”

hmmm worrying smells of ‘diversity of thought’ shit tho

I’m super good at CSS and I don’t recommend the cascade, don’t @ me | Simon Taggart - Front-End Engineer and Designer
“We follow these methodologies so that we control the cascade and the effect it can have on the visual appearance of our documents. Don’t you see? That’s our own admission that the cascade kinda sucks.”

The McDonaldization of UX – UX Collective
“Our processes have become standardized — not too much different from the way in which McDonald's standardized making cheeseburgers and fries. This is what McDonaldization does. It standardizes, delivers a product in high volume (low in quality), streamlines efficiency and exerts a certain amount of social control to standardize the thinking and behavior of designers regardless of where they work. Ultimately, this becomes dehumanizing when a designer is so bold as to venture outside the realms of established norms in the profession.”
