Practical Makefiles, by example
The purpose of this document is to explain how to write practical makefiles for your everyday hacks and projects. I want to illustrate, how easy it is to use make for building your programs, and doing so, dispel the notion that resorting to big clunky graphical IDEs, or makefile generators such as autotools or cmake, is the way to focus on your code faster.

Version Control with Mercurial
This lesson shows how to use a popular open source version control system called Mercurial (also known as hg). It is widely used, both because it’s easy to set up and because of a hosting site called Bitbucket. No matter which version control system you use, the most important thing to learn is not the details of their more obscure commands, but the workflow that they encourage.

Reporters in Ontario are going to have to get their shit together fast when it comes to reporting on Ford. He's continuing to spread false statements and that will require more thought on how those statements are presented to readers. Here are some resources

Fascism Reading List
The books in the following list are overwhelmingly written by individuals who had some sort of direct experience with the rise and rule of fascism. Therefore, these are not merely dry accounts of what happened – but fervent efforts on the parts of these authors to make sense of the horrors they lived through. In trying to make sense of their time, these authors can provide us insight into making sense of our own time. It is true that some of these books cover similar themes and topics, though they are not actually redundant, but these are books which work best when placed into conversation with each other. While there is plentiful historical scholarship on fascism, the Nazis’ rise to power, the Holocaust, and World War II – this list emphasizes works by those who personally lived through the period.

CMake - The Coding Nest
The end of semester is here and, as I grade our students semestral works, I get to use CMakeLists of dubious quality. After seeing the same errors repeat over and over again, I decided to write a short tutorial towards writing simple CMakeLists.

CMake by Example – Mirko Kiefer’s blog
When trying to learn CMake I could not find any good introduction. The CMake documentation is quite comprehensive but not suitable for a beginner. There are some useful tutorials linked on the CMake Wiki but most of them only cover very specific problems or are too basic. So I wrote this short CMake introduction as a distilled version of what I found out after working through the docs and following stackoverflow questions.

Its a work in progress and I will try to continuously improve it.

Firewall App Blocker
In Windows, you can use Windows Firewall to block or unblock certain applications, but it doesn’t offer an easy-to-use interface for its advanced features. If you want to block an application from accessing the internet, you must go through the following steps:

1. Click the Windows Start Menu and open Control Panel
2. Select System & Security
3. Then in the Firewall section, you select “Allow a program through the Windows Firewall”
4. If the program you wish to block or unblock isn’t listed, you must click “Allow another program” to add it. Choose the application in the list and select “Add”. Else you must then browse the hard drive to find it, and so on. This seems complicated for the average user.

Firewall App Blocker makes the process very easy! Simply drag and drop the application you wish to block into the FAB window, or browse the hard disk to find it.That’s it!

joey04/xulBlock-Advanced: XUL fork of uBlock Origin for Advanced users
xBA is a fork of uBlock Origin (uBO) for browsers that support XUL add-ons.
I've used xBA on Pale Moon, Basilisk, and Waterfox. It should work on other browsers too.
xBA is only for Advanced user mode
One purpose of xBA is to enhance the Advanced user experience, with a panel designed to quickly assess all domain connectivity.
xBA is not just for current Advanced users, though. It's also a good choice for regular uBO users with a serious desire to learn Advanced mode.

The media's language about killers in mass shootings analyzed — Quartz
Are there ingrained racial biases that surface when TV news outlets report these tragedies? Is this double standard persistent, or merely anecdotal?
Keen to answer these questions, Quartz reviewed the language used to describe the killers of 27 mass shootings in the US, beginning with the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in 2012.

To do this, we used a list of mass shootings maintained by Mother Jones and included only those killers where the race was ultimately identified. We then looked at transcripts from six cables news stations related to these shootings in immediate two-day period after the news broke.
