Steve Kroft: Growing a firm to help feed the world - The Globe and Mail
Feb. 17 2013 | The Globe and Mail | Gordon Pitts.

Steve Kroft runs the kind of company that is on Canada’s endangered species list. Winnipeg-based Conviron is a mid-sized manufacturer with a high-value-added product that is the world leader in its niche. The product line consists of environmentally controlled chambers used for plant research, and exports account for 90 per cent of sales. The family company – whose official name is Controlled Environments Ltd. – has been export-driven since it was established 49 years ago. As Steve Kroft explains it, the high Canadian dollar has only made it stronger....And where are the opportunities?

Our core competence is designing controlled environments. We happened to focus on agriculture and plant growth, but controlled environments are needed in other industries. People come to us to test protective clothing for first responders, or for applications in pharmaceuticals and chemical storage, and we do a very good job. We haven’t marketed yet in those kinds of areas, but they are where we can make a contribution.

Peter Munk: Recipe for success? Learning from failure
November 5, 2007 | The Globe and Mail | Gordon Pitts.

It's hard to think of Peter Munk as a failure. This is, after all, the man who built Barrick, the world's
largest gold miner, as well as a property empire, a philanthropic legacy and a reputation as a shootfrom-
the-hip tycoon. Yet in the 1960s, he was tarred with the collapse of Clairtone, a Canadian
manufacturer of cutting-edge stereo equipment and colour televisions that he had co-founded. Now approaching his 80th birthday, he considers the strange alchemy of failure and success, and how
entrepreneurs are formed.

Savvas Chamberlain rode an emotional roller coaster late last year as he negotiated the sale of Dalsa Corp., the Waterloo, Ontario, technology company he had built and nurtured for three decades.

The 69-year-old electronics engineer agreed to accept a takeover offer from Teledyne Technologies of California.

Why do so few Canadians grow companies past $1 billion in sales?

Canadians don't really appreciate or understand the significance of
enterprise business - start-ups, private firms and small- and
medium-sized companies. The success of enterprise businesses benefits
Canadian society. The wealth generated by the enterprise is spent in
Canada. It can't easily be taken somewhere else.

What are you going to do now?

I've already started investing in other high-tech companies in the
Kitchener-Waterloo area. I'll concentrate on technology areas I
understand.

Dean of Ivey's Hong Kong campus: 'Canadians are missing the boat' - The Globe and Mail
Nov. 01, 2010 | Globe & Mail | GORDON PITTS. We’re not
preparing the next generation for a time when China will be a
superpower. What are we doing to teach people about China? We still have
people calling us and saying ‘I’m going to China – what should I wear?’
In reality, Hong Kong is a sophisticated city. And when you land in
Beijing, you’re in an enormous city where people are master consumers.
And we are focusing all our attention on languages that might not be as
useful as Mandarin in the future.

It’s really about fixing young people’s attention on the fact the
economic powerhouse is not the U.S. any more. It is China and it is
India and we don’t know enough about this side of the world.

Too many scientists, not enough managers
May. 23, 2007 | The Globe and Mail | by Gordon Pitts. A
study, produced by Ontario's Institute for Competitiveness &
Prosperity and co-written by University of Toronto management dean Roger
Martin, says Canada is placing undue emphasis on science and technology
talent, while neglecting management skills that are in short supply.
"Our managers are undereducated relative to their U.S. counterparts,"
concludes the report, co-written by the institute's executive director
Jim Milway. "We produce fewer graduates in the management discipline
while no such deficit exists in science and engineering."

While science and engineering are important in seeding new ideas and
startups, leadership and management skills, such as strategic thinking,
come into play as companies try to move to the next level as users and
developers of innovation, the report argues.
