just across the street from that museum is an even more iconic Kennesaw landmark – a run-down, Old West saloon-looking building whose ground-floor porch is draped with myriad flags of the Confederacy. This is Wildman’s place: part store, part “museum.”

Inside, the cramped, dusty enclosure looks like someone’s overstuffed attic. Massive, multivolume sets of Civil War history sit alongside bizarre, self-published diatribes detailing the grand plans of the Illuminati. There’s a flimsy, plastic clock designed to count down to President Barack Obama's last day in office; there’s a big sign above the cluttered hovel of a cash register that reads: “White Trash.”

But move further into the store – to the very back, into an area described as a museum – and you’ll find something far more sinister. The walls and shelves are lined with grotesquely racist depictions of black people, complete with all the usual tropes – big lips, watermelons, the works. There’s shrines to the Klan, to white power.

...the underlying, centuries-old imbalances that allow such a thing to happen. ...an entire urban structure built on inequality....Last weekend, the Globe published a story on how the Ferguson protests have become an American phenomenon, sparking a nationwide conversation on race, poverty and violence. But where there is a story about breadth, there is also a story about depth....the fault lines of segregation exist not along one axis but two: race and wealth....To make ends meet, municipalities such as Ferguson have resorted to more direct means – namely, fees and court fines. Jaywalking and speeding citations aren’t just a tool for enforcing public safety, they’ve increasingly become a financial necessity.

But beyond creating a sense of resentment among the citizenry, these revenue tools have direct and sometimes life-changing consequences. In a place where the median household income is about $37,500 (roughly $10,000 less than the state average), tickets often go unpaid, leading to a warrant, which in turn can lead to arrest, destroying job prospects in the process.

But there’s more. In Missouri, those on parole or probation are not allowed to vote. That means a fine that started out as a financial measure for the municipality can end up as a tool of political disenfranchisement.

This week, TD will announce a partnership with Moven, a company whose namesake app monitors spending habits and, as a result, allows users to tighten up their discretionary spending and save money....Moven's app works in much the same way as health-tracking apps such as FitBit – but for personal finance....The result is an instant analysis of the user's financial health....With the Moven partnership, TD hopes to reintroduce the concept based on “soft advice” – an app that, rather than chastising users for spending too much money, offers them updates and tidbits of information about their spending habits with every purchase.... ...The move is part of an aggressive push by TD into mobile finance. Earlier this month, the bank announced it is partnering with UGO, a mobile wallet platform that allows users to digitize their credit and loyalty cards for use on smartphones.

Among the products unveiled were Google Fit (a health and fitness platform), Android Auto (which brings the popular operating system to cars) and Android TV.

Many of these products seem to mirror similar offerings recently released by Google’s chief rival, Apple. For example, at the iPhone-maker’s own developers’ conference earlier this month, the company boasted of its own fitness software platform, HealthKit, and a tool called CarPlay that offers drivers a safer way to use their iPhones in the car....In the fight for connected device dominance, the companies’ strategies are markedly different.

Whereas Apple’s mobile product lineup has always had a razor-sharp focus, Google tends to design and announce myriad product types and categories, and then quietly retire those that don’t catch on with consumers.

Digital dilemma: Amazon pushes to package up more profit

But if investor patience has in fact run out, as the reaction to the company’s last quarterly earnings may suggest, then Amazon will find itself under even more pressure to squeeze better margins from its content partners. And for a company as notoriously combative as Amazon, that process can sometimes get ugly.

Messy disputes

Earlier this month, Hachette Book Group (HBG), one of the smaller of the major publishing houses in North America, found that its books were taking an unusually long time to ship through Amazon.

Normally, customers could expect the retail giant to have many of Hachette’s titles on their doorstep within a couple of days. Instead, the wait times were closer to four weeks – and in the meantime, Amazon suggested they purchase similar titles from other publishers, which would be delivered much quicker.

“We are satisfying all of Amazon’s orders promptly, and notifying them constantly of forthcoming publicity events and of out-of-stock situations on their website,” a Hachette spokesperson said in a statement. “Amazon is holding minimal stock and restocking some of HBG’s books slowly, causing ‘available 2-4 weeks’ messages, for reasons of their own.”

Amazon’s disputes with book publishers have been well-documented and often messy. Four years ago, during a dispute with the publishing house Macmillan over e-book prices, the online retailer simply removed a user’s ability to purchase Macmillan titles from the Amazon website – a tactic that can have immediate and profound financial repercussions for the publisher, especially given that Amazon controls somewhere between a third and half of the book market in the U.S.

At stake in the Hachette dispute is not only the publisher’s own sales, but also Amazon’s ability to muscle better terms out of its publishing partners. Both companies are caught up in a bitter fight over e-book pricing terms, with Amazon trying to get the lowest prices possible from the publisher to boost its anemic profit margins. An Amazon spokeswoman refused to comment on the matter.

According to some observers, part of the acrimony between Amazon and some of its content partners is likely a result of culture.

Xtreme Labs did not disclose the purchase price to The Globe and Mail. Citing sources close to the deal, All Things Digital reported the price at $65-million (U.S.).

Using variants of the same tools that banks and insurance companies use to detect patterns of account fraud, retail chains in Canada and the U.S. mine their customers’ shopping patterns looking for opportunities to personalize the shopping experience. For example, earlier this year, Shoppers began rolling out a personalized e-mail brochure to each of its loyalty card customers. The e-mails often contain offers not found in their general flyers, as well as limited-time discounts on the sorts of products that individual customers have purchased in the past.

“We’ve had the data for a while now and it has allowed us to make improvements within the store format, but now we’re taking it to the next level,” says Tammy Smitham, vice president of communications and corporate affairs at Shoppers. “We’re giving them exactly what they’re shopping for.”

Android’s importance to Google is two-fold. First, it allowed a company that developed its search services for the desktop age to gain a foothold in the mobile world. Second, it allows Google to put the products where it does make money – primarily, its search engine – front and centre on all Android-based devices. Indeed, whatever revenue-generating software comes up in the future has a natural home on the hundreds of millions of Android devices already on the market...Google is giving away a platform, not a product. The company that dominated the Internet search market by acting as an advertising middleman in billions of user queries is taking the same approach to the mobile world. Rather than looking to profit off the sale of its software, Google is aiming for a critical mass, and attempting to put Android everywhere....Android is now one part of a much wider strategy at Google, whereby the company builds platforms and technologies on which all kinds of other services can run, and then gives them away for free. Gamification can make your brand appealing and addictive

Gamification refers to a strategy whereby interactions with a brand are made more appealing and addictive to consumers by incorporating tricks from the gaming world, such as high-score tables and achievement badges. Are such "achievements" almost completely worthless in the real world? Yes. Do consumers become mindlessly addicted to them anyway? Yes.

2. Think of gamification as a way of creating an Aeroplan-like loyalty program at a tiny fraction of the cost. Many businesses implement loyalty programs such as "get the 10th coffee free" cards. But Zichermann says free stuff is actually at the bottom of the list of what customers want. He uses the acronym SAPS: status, access, power, stuff. Those are the things loyal customers want, in that order. As such, lunch with the owner or a 15-minute head start on a sale for your best customers might be far more effective than a free coffee.

3. Figure out where your product fits into your customers' lives and help make that experience more meaningful.

things on the Internet. But Google no longer believes the future of the
Web is on the personal computer. Instead, the company predicts most
people will soon be connecting to the outside world through mobile
devices. If that prediction is right, it means that's where advertising

Today, Google is expanding into more areas than at any time in its
history: smart phones, e-readers, operating systems, on-line stores. Its
