Venture Firms Take a New Tack
February 3, 2013 | WSJ | By PUI-WING TAM.

Venture-capital firms are taking stiff measures to survive a tough fundraising environment and lackluster returns, including gutting their partnerships, slashing their fund sizes and refocusing their investment areas....Many venture firms are responding to a higher bar from investors, who have been disenchanted with scant venture returns and are scrutinizing partnerships closely to pick out the stronger versus weaker venture capitalists in a firm.

Venture Capital's New Adventure - WSJ.com
December 21, 2006 | WSJ | By PUI-WING TAM.

Usual Role of Nurturing Start-Ups Takes On a Private-Equity Twist; Mr. Lanza Becomes a Deal Maker...."I suddenly became aware that we were triggering a rollup in the sector and my phone was ringing off the hook," says Mr. Lanza, 50 years old. "It was very surreal. I'm used to wandering the halls of Stanford to fund companies founded by two guys and a dog."

Like Mr. Lanza, other venture capitalists have broadened their roles beyond investing in and nurturing start-up businesses. They more often find themselves handling spinouts -- or buying units of publicly traded companies -- as well as so-called rollups and buyouts, and generally engaging in more-complex financial transactions.

In other words, they have stepped into the realm of private equity, now one of the finance world's hottest arenas. The change could make investing in venture-capital funds more risky.

Venture Capitalists Who Jumped on First Internet Wave Get the Feeling
Again.

leading Kleiner partner John Doerr and Ms. Meeker have been making the
rounds of Silicon Valley Web start-ups and have personally negotiated
stakes in companies.

There's been an "advent of a perfect storm" of "social, local and
mobile" Web companies, and "so we're pursuing that," said Mr. Doerr in
an interview. "It's a new business for Kleiner Perkins, and so we're
getting up every day and fighting to get into the best investments."

Kleiner venture capitalist Bing Gordon spent an hour onstage espousing
his theory of "gamification"—that is, how start-ups can benefit from
using online gaming techniques—to the gathering.

Site Adopts Crowd-Sourcing - WSJ.com
OCT. 7, 2010 | WSJ | by Pui-Wing Tam. Site Adopts
Crowd-Sourcing to Link Start-Ups, Investors. Angel List, a website run
by start-up investors and entrepreneurs Naval Ravikant and Babak Nivi,
was launched late last year as a free site to help entrepreneurs garner
seed funding. Over the past 6 mths., Angel List has helped more than 50
young companies raise financing, says Mr. Ravikant, with two to five
companies funded on a weekly basis. More than 370 angel investors and
venture capitalists now use Angel List, he adds, up from 25 at the start
of the year. Angel List began as a matchmaker, where Messrs. Ravikant
and Nivi identified promising start-ups and put them in contact with
interested investors. But it has since been evolving toward a community
model: Start-ups send in a form to Angel List, and any of the site's
investors are able to evaluate applicants online and pick out companies
they want to meet with. Potential investors then rate the start-up.
