The Measure of Success
February 1996 | Across the Board | Brian McWilliams. About using a balanced scorecard.
(1) Profits are a lousy star to steer by. These organizations are attempting to navigate by a constellation of measures--including customer satisfaction, quality, innovations, employee development, and of course, financial soundness.
(2) Use scorecards that focus the organization on carefully chosen, "actionable" measures--things that business line managers and their employees can influence directly, such as customer satisfaction, yield and reliability.
(3) Any collection of non financial measures, will be the product of compromises. The information that's most strategic--how customers view you vs. competitors, for example--is nearly impossible to gather. And information that is readily available--your cost of processing an invoice, for example, doesn't tend to be highly strategic.
(4) Resource allocations are often subjective decisions, with the squeakiest wheels sometimes getting the grease. Most important, a single-minded focus on financial yardsticks doesn't ensure that investments are aligned with long-term corporate strategy.

The weekend Globe – bigger, bolder, better - The Globe and Mail
October 1, 2010 | Globe and Mail Update | John Stackhouse,
Editor-in-chief. A great newspaper must speak to the soul of every great
conversation. We are doing that starting today with an eight-week
project: debates Canada needs to have, not about the issues of our past,
but that will determine our future .... It's not just our views. If
you go to our website, you'll find discussion forums on each of these
topics. They've been raging for months, involving 800 Globe readers
sharing ideas with each other and our reporters to challenge and improve
our journalism. It's a beginning. In the months ahead, our website will
be the focus of informed and reasonable debate about the many passions
of our readers and concerns of our nation. Follow the debates, in print
and online, and then launch your own, if you have the courage to lead.

For B-Schools, Opportunities Rise in Africa -
September 23, 2010 | BusinessWeek | By Alison Damast. Once
content with distant partnerships in Africa, business schools in Europe,
Asia, and the U.S. are now establishing more direct programs on the
continent. An example of relevant content and it begs the question
whether our proposed website be of assistance to the three schools in
this regard.

Analyst Sees Securities Firms Cutting Jobs and Pay -
September 7, 2010 | NYT via By BLOOMBERG NEWS | Anonymous.
“The key product drivers of Wall Street’s revenues and profits over the
past decade have been in a structural decline over the past three
years,” Ms. Whitney said in the report.

Barclays, the Credit Suisse Group and the Royal Bank of Scotland Group
may lead a slowdown in hiring in Europe as the fixed-income trading boom
fizzles out, recruiters said last month. Barclays Capital’s income from
trading bonds and commodities fell 40 percent in the first half amid
the sovereign debt crisis. Fixed-income, currencies and commodities
trading was the biggest revenue contributor at investment banks from
Deutsche Bank to Goldman Sachs.

Some Newspapers Shift Coverage After Tracking Readers Online -
September 5, 2010 | Wall Street Journal | By JEREMY W.
PETERS. In most businesses, not knowing how well a particular product
is performing would be almost unthinkable. Now, because of technology
newspapers can pinpoint what people online are viewing and commenting
on, how much time they spend with an article and even how much money an
article makes in advertising revenue, newspapers can make more
scientific decisions about allocating their ever scarcer resources.
...reader metrics as a tool to help him better determine how to use
online resources.

“We ask, ‘What can we do online to make it more attractive?” ’ Mr.
Narisetti said. “Can we do podcasts? Can we do a photo gallery? Can we
do any kind of user-generated content?”

Seth's Blog: Is it too late to catch up?
Posted by Seth Godin on December 03, 2009. What if your
organization or your client has done nothing? What if they've just
watched the last fourteen years go by? No real website, no social media,
no permission assets. What if now they're ready and they ask your
advice? And, by the way, they have no real cash to spend...Here's a list
of Seth's top ten things to consider doing:

......*Start a newsletter for your vendors. Email them regular updates about what you're doing, what's selling and what problems are going on internally that they might be able to help you with.
*Do not approve any project that isn't run on Basecamp.
*Get a white board and put it in the break room. On it, have someone update: how many people subscribe to the newsletter, how many people visit the website, how many inbound requests come in by phone, how long it takes customer service to answer an email and how often your brand names are showing up on Twitter every day.
*Don't have any meetings about your web strategy. Just do stuff. First you have to fail, then you can improve.
*Refuse to cede the work to consultants. You don't outsource your drill press or your bookkeeping or your product design. If you're going to catch up, you must (all of you) get good at this, and you only accomplish that by doing it.
The problem is no longer budget. The problem is no longer access to tools.

Put Money 101 on the curriculum
Nov. 05, 2009 | Report on Business | by Rob Carrick. The
Ontario government said this week that kids in grades four through 12
will learn about money management starting in 2011, and a federal task
force was launched last summer to find ways to improve financial
literacy. Research commissioned by the Investor Education Fund (IEF), a
not-for-profit offshoot of the Ontario Securities Commission. The point
of the study, which involved about 850 people aged 20 to 34, was to
figure out how young adults learn in an online world. An emphasis was
placed on how they learn what they need to know to handle life events
like having a child or buying a home.

It's a Success, but Is That Enough - The New York Times
Sunday, October 27, 1996 | New York Times | By PETER MARKS.
About the business of New York City theater. Could use of strategic or
larger, questions. Could that perennial basket case of the American
stage, the Vivian Beaumont Theater, be saved? It was not an issue of
landmark preservation but of artistic rescue. What kind of theater is it
going to be? This is an age when audiences look increasingly to the
nonprofit theater for original work, when big institutions like the
Joseph Papp Public Theater and the Manhattan Theater Club seek to be
players on Broadway. Will Lincoln Center Theater choose to become even
more commercial, or will it use its money and power to become the
leading creative force in the nation for new theater? Membership
