The Pop-Up Employer: Build a Team, Do the Job, Say Goodbye -

Two Stanford biz profs, Melissa Valentine and Michael Bernstein, have introduced the idea of “flash organizations” — ephemeral setups to execute a single, complex project in ways traditionally associated with corporations, nonprofit groups or governments.....information technology has made the flash organization a suddenly viable form across a number of industries.....intermediaries are already springing up across industries like software and pharmaceuticals to assemble such organizations. They rely heavily on data and algorithms to determine which workers are best suited to one another, and also on decidedly lower-tech innovations, like middle management......Temporary organizations capable of taking on complicated projects have existed for decades, e.g. Hollywood, where producers assemble teams of directors, writers, actors, costume and set designers and a variety of other craftsmen and technicians to execute projects with budgets in the tens if not hundreds of millions.....Jody Miller, a former media executive and venture capitalist, a co-founder of the Business Talent Group, sets up temporary teams of freelancers for corporations. “We’re the producers,” Ms. Miller said. “We understand how to evaluate talent, pick the team.”.....
Three lessons stand out across the flash-type models. First is that the platforms tend to be highly dependent on data and computing power....Second is the importance of well-established roles. ...Third, there is perhaps the least likely of innovations: middle management. The typical freelancer performs worker-bee tasks. Flash-like organizations tend to combine both workers and managers...........Flash organizations have obvious limits....they tend to work best for projects with well-defined life spans, not continuing engagements....“The bottleneck now is project managers,” ... “It’s a really tough position to fill.”.....even while fostering flexibility, the model could easily compound insecurity. Temporary firms are not likely to provide health or retirement benefits. ..... the anxiety is legitimate, but these platforms could eventually dampen insecurity by playing a role that companies have historically played: providing benefits, topping off earnings if workers’ freelance income is too low or too spotty, even allowing workers to organize.

Mr. Bouchard says the opportunity convinced him that his company needed to be the “master contractor” in the equation, controlling the entire life cycle of a job. A new business model was born. “The idea was that we would get the revenue from the Bay and then pay the contractor on the other end to execute the work,” he says. “That’s how we evolved from being an online directory to being a national installation company for major retailers.”

Amazon Offers Help Finding Local Handymen - WSJ

The e-commerce giant has introduced a service in three cities aimed at connecting customers to local service providers like plumbers and electricians, according a person briefed on the plan.

Amazon shoppers in New York, Los Angeles and Seattle would see the offers after purchasing items like a car stereo or air conditioner that may require installation, the person said.

The listings service, known as Amazon Local Services, is part of a broader Amazon effort to compete with brick-and-mortar stores, which still account for more than 90% of retail sales. Similarly, Amazon is trying several initiatives to speed deliveries, and released a credit-card reader earlier this year.

But the listings service will face hurdles. It can take years to build a stable of service providers. Moreover, Amazon is entering a crowded market with established players such as Yelp Inc., Angie’s List Inc. and Craigslist, as well as startups like Thumbtack. Groupon Inc. recently rolled out a listings service through which it will eventually offer daily deals.

The size and scale of private contracting for intelligence goes "well beyond the scope of anything the public is aware of or even imagines," said Peter Singer, director of the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence at the Brookings Institution.

About 1.2 million Americans hold top-secret clearances, the Director of National Intelligence reported this year. More than a third of those, 38%, are private contractors.

Nearly all of the private-sector growth followed the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Although some of the information on intelligence contractors is secret, NSA officials have said the number of its vendors grew to 6,000 in 2006 from 140 in 2001.

"It's hard to think of a single thing the intelligence community can do on its own anymore without a contractor being involved in some way," Mr. Singer said, "from the most mundane of data crunching to the pointy end of the black ops side."

Reliance on private contractors sprang from the need to quickly ramp up data collection and analysis after the 9/11 attacks, experts said.
