It's about understanding your boss's and boss's boss's priorities so you can focus your staff on delivering those objectives and also help move your company forward. People who do this are the linchpins of their companies....there is a big difference between bragging about oneself to bosses and gaining recognition for employees....when assigned a new boss, try to determine exactly what method of communication (i.e. frequency, style) he or she prefers..."Managers owe it to their staffs to tell superiors, 'Here's what my team was able to accomplish,' "

One of the shortest writing assignments at Northeastern is one of the
most frequently bungled. For the Marketing and Customer Value class
students must write, in fewer than 150 words, a compelling email
convincing executives to implement a marketing and pricing strategy.

Students rarely get to the point, says Bruce Clark, writing coordinator
for the M.B.A. program. "The first sentence should begin with, 'The
single most important issue here is.' You'd be amazed how few students
do that," he says.

* Turn battleships by making directional commitments and staying the

* In giving feedback, the positive messages get lost in the one negative
message, and the negative message gets garbled.
* Figure out what your North Star is.
* Be open to new challenges.
* If there are 10 tasks in an overall project, identify the most
critical task among those 10. What is the one thing that everything
else hinges on (i.e. the linchpin)? Invest time in understanding that one thing. Then,
if/when the problem occurs, it usually occurs there.

(2) Which decisions or activities, done right, will have a disproportionately positive effect on performance?
(3) In terms of skilful team-building, what skills do you have? Need?
