On a milestone of misrule, Mugabe fumes as Zimbabwe falls apart
Apr. 21 2014 | G&M | GEOFFREY YORK.

Mr. Mugabe’s rule is unchallenged these days, after a landslide victory in a 2013 election that was widely seen as tainted and rigged. But while he dominates the country, the Zimbabwean economy is continuing to slide towards disaster – even though Western sanctions on the Mugabe regime have been largely eliminated.

Consumer spending fell by 30 per cent in February (the most recent data available); government revenue dropped by 10 per cent in the same month; civil-service wages have been delayed because the government cannot pay them; and dozens of factories have shut down in recent months, eliminating more than 9,000 jobs at a time when unemployment is already estimated at about 60 per cent...Just 14 years ago, Zimbabwe was one of the wealthiest economies in Africa. Today it has fallen into the bottom half of the continent’s economies. Mr. Mugabe’s misrule has cost Zimbabwe about $96-billion (U.S.) in those 14 years, according to an analyst at the U.S.-based Centre for Global Development. The country’s GDP would be more than twice as big today if it had followed the growth pattern of neighboring Zambia in that period, he noted.

“Mugabe has the ignominious distinction of being the only African head-of-state to preside over an average decline in both economic output and life expectancy since 1980,”

Dictatorship comes naturally to them, right?
June 24, 2008 | Globe & Mail | Jonathan Zimmerman.

Where are the mock shantytowns at North American universities, dramatizing the brutality of Mr. Mugabe's regime? Where are the actors and congressmen, staging sit-ins at Zimbabwean embassies and consulates? Where are the concerts and benefits to generate support for the dissidents? These tactics were staples of the anti-apartheid movement in my college days, but I haven't heard about any large-scale protests here against Mr. Mugabe, who has proven every bit as cruel and cynical as the apartheid rulers.

Why the double standard? You already know the answer: South Africa's oppressors were white. Thanks to our own racial blinders and stereotypes, we expect more of white leaders; they should know better. But blacks? Dictatorship comes naturally to them, right?

Pop-Tarts Or Freedom? - Op-Ed -
January 16, 2005 | NYT | By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN;

In the wake of U.S. aid to help Muslim and other victims of the recent tsunami, Colin Powell suggested that maybe, now that the Muslim world had seen ''American generosity'' and ''American values in action,'' it wouldn't be so hostile to America.

Don't hold your breath waiting for a thank-you card. If the fact that American soldiers have risked their lives to save the Muslims of Bosnia, the Muslims of Kuwait, the Muslims of Somalia, the Muslims of Afghanistan and the Muslims of Iraq has earned the U.S. only the false accusation of being ''anti-Muslim,'' trust me, U.S. troops passing out bottled water and Pop-Tarts in Indonesia are not going to erase that lie. It is not an exaggeration to say that, if you throw in the Oslo peace process, U.S. foreign policy for the last 15 years has been dominated by an effort to save Muslims -- not from tsunamis, but from tyrannies, mostly their own theocratic or autocratic regimes.

Roger Bate: Zimbabwe's Road to Ruin -
SEPTEMBER 21, 2010 | Wall Street Journal | by ROGER BATE.
Nationalizing foreign-owned businesses could doom what's left of this
economy. Zimbabwe is back in the news, and again for all the wrong
reasons. Last week Indigenization Minister Saviour Kasukuwere announced
that any firm worth more than $500,000 will be required to sell a
controlling 51% stake to black Zimbabweans. This effectively means that
all of Zimbabwe's foreign-owned industries are to be nationalized.
