Tribes With Flags -
Published: March 22, 2011

Is the battle for Libya the clash of a brutal dictator against a
democratic opposition, or is it fundamentally a tribal civil war?”
...Iraqis still have not given us the definitive answer to their key
question: Is Iraq the way Iraq is because Saddam was the way Saddam was
or was Saddam the way Saddam was because Iraq is the way Iraq is: a
tribalized society? All the other Arab states now hosting rebellions —
Yemen, Syria, Bahrain and Libya — are Iraq-like civil-wars-in-waiting.
Some may get lucky and their army may play the role of the guiding hand
to democracy, but don’t bet on it.

In other words, Libya is just the front-end of a series of moral and
strategic dilemmas we are going to face as these Arab uprisings proceed
through the tribes with flags."

If Not Now, When? -
Published: February 22, 2011
What’s unfolding in the Arab world today is the mother of all wake-up
calls. And what the voice on the other end of the line is telling us is
clear as a bell:

“America, you have built your house at the foot of a volcano. That
volcano is now spewing lava from different cracks and is rumbling like
it’s going to blow. Move your house!” In this case, “move your house”
means “end your addiction to oil.”

Is the Middle East the new land of opportunity? - Fortune Finance
February 16, 2011 9:05 am

Before the uprising in Tahrir Square, young entrepreneurs had been
creating their own opportunities throughout the Middle East and North
Africa. For investors brave enough to overcome the existing political
strife, the pay-offs could be huge.

Doing Good for the World Versus Doing Good for the Bottom Line -
February 10, 2011

The uprising in Egypt has provoked the familiar
“realism-versus-idealism” foreign policy debate in many Western
capitals, as diplomats and politicians struggle to balance their
ideological sympathy for the protesters with fears of chaos and the
threat of a future anti-Western and anti-Israel policy from Cairo.

What we have paid less attention to is that the demonstrations have
forced some of the world’s hottest technology companies to engage in a
very similar debate.
