The coming Enterprise Software Hurricane
"In the book, I point out that “tilting the bell curve of customers” to move Bystanders into the Risk Taker and Modernizer categories is SAP’s big short term opportunity. The book has several ideas for SAP to do so. Other on-prem vendors have similar opportunities in their own customer bases. And, whoever does it quickly in their customer base will also have a shot at attracting Risk-takers and Modernizers from other on-prem competitors. However, as these vendors introduce new offerings and messages, SaaS, TPM and other vendors won’t stand still – they will update their own offerings to remain competitive."

"As an industry, we have implemented or upgraded ERP software tens of millions of times. It is absurd that we tolerate the failure rates and cost overruns that has become synonymous with ERP. Every aspect of ERP was a reason to gouge – close to 100% gross margins on software, ridiculous MPLS circuit and storage pricing, you name it. Offshore vendors who could show CMM Level 5 continuous improvements suddenly forgot that discipline when it came to ERP support. Much of what is delivered by SIs and outsourcers can and should be automated – see several ideas here"

Oracles streak of missed opportunities
"But even within its peer group, Oracle has missed out on several opportunities. It took way too long to deliver Fusion. Even then, it could have stalled growth at Workday, Salesforce, Adobe and other cloud vendors. It could have delivered a knockout punch to SAP starting around 2010 with its early start with Fusion and its many cloud acquisitions. It could have taken several of its vertical industry capabilities to the cloud and gone after SAP in those markets. It did not and SAP with S/4 and its own cloud acquisitions has weathered the storm."

Nothing permanent about Oracle-Rimini
"But…..Oracle could have solved this years ago by offering a similar service. Most Rimini customers I talk to were not just attracted by the lower price (they had to balance the viability risk that came with a small vendor being sued). They did like the fact that Rimini supports their customizations. They love the fact that their ticket volumes have GONE UP. Yes, they got tired of raising tickets with Oracle (or SAP) because they tell me they rarely got resolved so they quit raising them. They like the dedicated rep model they get with Rimini. Oracle usually tells them the quality of their product is more secure, more trusted etc. It was a quality of service, as much as product and an economic decision for many customers."

Tis the season for software lawsuits
"I want to see how Teradata attorneys can succinctly explain arcane optimization algorithms to a jury. Also how they refute SAP’s considerable prior art when it comes to analytics – their three tier architecture in R/3 which allowed it to support multiple databases and understand how users access certain fields more than others , Business Warehouse going back to 1997, its Business Objects acquisition in 2007 and its Sybase acquisition in 2010 and many other elements. In The New Polymath, in 2010 I had written about work at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Pottsdam which I believe was the genesis for what became HANA. Not saying one side has more merit than the other, but it will mean looking at a lot of documentation to say who developed what and when before the other did."

SAP: Past, Present and Future
"I was very encouraged that most of the conversations were focused on process, industry and geography. This used to be SAP’s strength and it is good to hear Board members and a new generation of executives who lead its cloud properties like hybris and Ariba talk fluently about trends in talent management, shop floor, customer facing areas and be able to bring in nuances from different verticals and global regions. Every so often the company gets consumed with platforms and tools like NetWeaver and HANA and forgets it is an application software vendor. There was mandatory technology talk and buzzwords in this session but I felt good about SAP’s present and future after spending time with these executives."

SAPs new ERP pricing model: Quick analysis
" In addition to Trust, I wish this team had also been given Realism as a target. As I pointed out in my recent note on Uptake, value in software has been moving away from transaction processing to intelligence and analytics. Not sure the exchange/conversion values reflect the fact that ERP functionality pricing should have steadily declined over the last few decades. In a world where machines are doing more of the work at the front end of so many processes, improving quality of data etc. why should you continue to pay for (often duplicative) work by your ERP system at the back end of that process at the same rate you did a while ago?"

"My relative disappointment with enterprise platforms is one reason I was one of the few analysts who was not clamoring for Workday to open up its own platform. It did last year and I hope they set ambitious goals for partners who develop on its platform – make sure they are well funded, go after massive and underserved markets across verticals and geographies."

"Even though its cloud acquisitions – SuccessFactors, Ariba, hybris, Concur etc – were not cheap, they have helped keep SAP competitive on this side of the pond. With what we have seen in the first couple of years of S/4HANA the ship is tilting back to the on-premise world. Oh sure it promises three options – public cloud, private cloud or on-premise but the public cloud option is a tiny portion of the deployments."

Oracle Database: Solid for Now - by @dealarchitect
"When I talk to corporate buyers, I get a similar vibe of “little love” for Oracle. They constantly evaluate open-source, NoSQL, HANA and other options. But the talent, systems management tools and other “bag of tricks” they have invested in to tune the database, recover from downtime etc. keep them grounded. Having said that Oracle sometimes misreads continued commitment to the database as customer loyalty."

"Not sure why it feels the need to exaggerate progress on S/4. In SAP Nation 2.0 I profiled progress of several next-gen products and I wrote “As we have seen earlier with Oracle, Microsoft and JD Edwards, a next-gen product takes years of development and maturation. Migrating a legacy customer base takes even longer. Those are just the laws of physics. SAP may be able to bend them slightly with S/4, but will likely not be able to break them.”

"What was less on display was the software. The sessions were long on slides and words, less on demos. Given that it was my first SuccessConnect, I asked a few “regulars” – analysts who come to the event every year. To a person, they used the word “transition”. SuccessFactors is being transitioned to leverage SAP’s assets."

"I also did not like Plattner announcing in his keynote S/4 is “basically done” or the fact that he said some bloggers had confirmed to him he was correct. Not this blogger – to me S/4 is where R/3 was in 1995. As we saw over the next decade, SAP (and other ERP) vendors had to expand functionality in CRM, SCM, EAM, BI and many other categories. SAP also had to launch a wide range of IS, industry solutions."
