5 Proven Ways Manufacturers Can Get Started With Analytics
" I believe they’re in a tough situation with customers wanting short-notice production time while supply chains often needing to be redesigned to reduce or eliminate tariffs. They’re turning to analytics to gain the insights they need to take on these challenges and more. The graphic below is from Gartner’s latest survey of heavy manufacturing CIOs, it indicates the technology areas where heavy manufacturing CIOs’ organizations will be spending the largest amount of new or additional funding in 2019 as well as the technology areas where their organizations will be reducing funding by the highest amount in 2019 compared with 2018"

What Matters Most In Business Intelligence, 2019
"Improving revenues using BI is now the most popular objective in 2019, despite BI initially being positioned as a solution for compliance and risk management. Executive Management, Marketing/Sales, and Operations are driving the focus on improving revenues this year. Nearly 50% of enterprises now expect BI to deliver better decision making, making the areas of reporting, and dashboards must-have features. Interestingly, enterprises aren’t looking to BI as much for improving operational efficiencies and cost reductions or competitive advantages."

Seven Things You Need To Know About IIoT In Manufacturing
"IIoT platforms are beginning to replace MES and related applications, including production maintenance, quality, and inventory management, which are a mix of Information Technology (IT) and Operations Technology (OT) technologies. IoT Analytics is seeing IIoT platforms begin to replace existing industrial software systems that had been created to bridge the IT and OT gaps in manufacturing environments. Their research teams are finding that IIoT Platforms are an adjacent technology to these typical industrial software solutions but are now starting to replace some of them in smart connected factory settings. The following graphic explains how IoT Analytics sees the IIoT influence across the broader industrial landscape."

Highlights from Host Perform 2019 General Session
"Since the CFO already has a seat at the table, I think Ron’s more talking about reframing the role and the vision of the CFO. I agree – particularly when it comes to being able to answer questions that help improve business performance. And, I believe, that if the CFO can’t migrate to being the CAO (chief answers officer) then the chief data officer (CDO) might well do it instead via data science and operations teams. To be a bit paranoid, it’s a threat — not an existential threat, but a threat nevertheless — to the power of the office of the CFO."

S&OP: Can You Make Decisions at the Speed of Business?
"Invest in Descriptive Analytics. Allow business users access to data through the use descriptive analytics. Layer technologies like Microsoft Power BI, Qlik, Spotfire, Tableau, and Thoughtspot on top of planning technologies. To improve S&OP execution, focus on helping business users access data at the speed of business. This means less focus on traditional reporting, ERP and portal strategies. Make discussions data-driven using descriptive analytics layered on top of complex technology landscapes. The average company has five-to-seven S&OP processes and seven-to-eight advanced planning technologies. As a result, getting to data is a barrier."

Progress Report - Workday Innovation Summit 2019 - Workday doubles down on AI and Skills
"On the concern side, Workday’s move to the public cloud is … slow. When asked, Bhusri foresees probably two more hardware refresh cycles in the Workday data centers… translated, that means he sees full public cloud 4-6 years out. Operationally that maybe fine, but from the AI / ML perspective obstructional to implement any deep learning on customer data. Workday is to a certain point lucky, as HR and Finance are somewhat moving slower than e.g. Commerce, IoT etc. I also missed (at least a demo refresh / update) on voice as the new UX, as this is most transformation for the sporadic nature of HCM interactions.

Who Will Win?
"The wider market is decision support. The goal is to improve organizational decision-making by unleashing the power of analytics. The supply chain planning market is narrow and used by only 3-5% of back office personnel. The new goal is decision support for the masses. The new solutions deliver answers better, faster and easier. Today’s solutions are expensive, long to deploy and hard to use. The greater the M&A activity, the worse the issue. (JDA, E2Open, Infor, and Logility grew through acquisitions.)"

Control Towers: If Only There Was A Clear Definition
"Companies are drowning in data, but struggle to get insights. As shown in Figure 3, companies struggle to get data to make decisions. The focus is on functional metrics, but most are unable to get to overall supply chain metrics. For example, only 29% of manufacturing companies can access total cost data and 31% struggle to see the impact of business decisions on inventory. So, one business use case for control towers is accessing supply chain key performance indicators. The average company has five-to-seven Advanced Planning Systems (APS) and twelve Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Solutions. While performance monitoring is not the most common use case for a control tower project, the gap exists."

Rebooting analytics leadership: Time to move beyond the math
"CAOs often find themselves doing this heavy lifting with a limited sphere of influence. They typically do not have the profit-and-loss or revenue accountability that would grant them due power in the organization. Moreover, like chief marketing officers a decade ago, CAOs need—but typically lack—a true seat at the C-suite table, placing them at a disadvantage when trying to obtain adequate funding or resources to power the analytics agenda. What Value Are You Getting From Planning?
"Why should you care? Today market turbulence abounds. Spiraling transportation costs, tariff shifts and increased expectations for customer service sparks new interest in supply chain planning. Operations complexity coupled with the rise in demand volatility increases corporate risk. (Reference Figure 1. The larger the bubble, the greater the risk.)

Outsourcing–procurement, manufacturing and transportation– decreased visibility and increased data latency. As a result, we introduced black holes into the supply chain. Additionally the move from regional to global supply chain management decreased visibility. Yet, companies continued to invest primarily in ERP systems."

SAS exposes the contradictions in Analytics and the true nature of AI
"Understanding the context and role that AI can play today and in the future is crucial in recognising the true opportunities that it offers. This is akin to owning a plot of land in the City, as yet unbuilt upon. As it exists it is nothing but a piece of empty space. But what could it be?"
