Event Report: Apple Formally Launches Services Strategy #AppleEvent
"In Apple’s case, the have to put content, network, and technology together. Today, they have a dominance in devices (technology) and a distribution network (retail and app store). Apple’s services initiative bring the missing content piece to drive the percentage of revenue from 15% to 20% by the end of 2020. Should Apple activate its 10% of its 50M subscriber base to add $20 to $30 per month in services, they could catch up with Spotify (96M) and Netflix (140M) in three to five years time. While hardware will always remain important, it’s hardware plus services that will serve as the foundation of these digital experiences. Apple and Tim Cook must bring the right talent in to orchestrate one of the biggest transformations at one of the world’s most valuable companies."

Musings - Apple Services Event 2019
Today, March 26th 2:56am
· Holger Mueller (
· apple
Apple had its long anticipated services event in Cupertino on the 25th of March. Not surprisingly, Apple announced a news, TV service. The gaming service was expected somewhat. The real surprise was the card.

I collected my notes and thoughts in a Twitter Moment (if it doesn't render - you can find it here):

Apple Services Event [FtF]

Tech companies do not get media, so I am sceptical that Apple can pull of anything of real substance around News and TV. Most people get these services already and often for free (as bundled with other services). Granted - Apple can throw billions at this - and showed the star power at the event. But the stars will take the money, but not guarantee success. It all reminded me of Yahoo! signing Katie Couric to go into news. Why will it work today for Apple? The challenge is also to convert a free offering (Apple News) to a paid one - never easy."

Event Report - Salesforce Dreamforce 2018 - AI, Apple & Customer 360 - but where is the CRM thought leadership?
"It was the usual mega event for Salesforce, it’s partners and its users. Attendees were optimistic and looking forward on innovation to come in 2019. Good to see the shift towards more neural network-based AI, which at the moment is clearly the AI technology of choice. Good to keep Einstein’s voice efforts cross platform. But details were not shared – where does Salesforce plan to build all these models, where does the data have to be, etc. Good to see what MuleSoft is ultimately about, pulling off Customer 360 – if Salesforce managed to implement this architecture (and get customer to pay for it) – it may justify the princely cost of MuleSoft. To be fair – that is little of concern for Salesforce users, who they want to see value coming form their vendor overall, across the product suite."

Event Report - Mobile World Congress 2018 - 5G and more #MWC18 - by @holgermu
"5G everywhere – I thought I saw a 5G sticker on my Iberic Ham sandwich… 5G was everywhere, slapped on everything… ironically the debut demos were all about… phone calls. And that’s what 5G is not about, but about bringing networks to 21st century standard in throughput (high def video), latency (<1 ms) and density (over 100+ devices on a square meter). These are all key specs to enable a more human (visual), a more thing driven (density) and a more AI driven (latency) next generation application for enterprises, all very hard to do on current 4G / 4G LTE standards."

Apple’s enterprise strategy begins to take shape - by @ron_miller
" When Apple announced its partnership with GE this week, it would have been easy to dismiss it as another random collaboration from a company people don’t generally associate with the enterprise. After all, Apple killed off their enterprise server product years ago. You might rightly ask, what exactly do they have to do with the enterprise these days?"

Tech sector begins legal assault on Trump immigration order
"Several major tech companies are organizing in opposition to the Trump administration’s executive order that restricts entry or re-entry of citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries. Review: Automation, Joblessness and the Vacuum of Tech Ethics - by @cote
"Increasingly, what people are finding is that it’s hard to find the types of jobs they know how to do, that pay what they’re expecting, and that aligns with their identity. The last two problems are especially vexing since so many service sector jobs are filling up labor growth curves. This space is full of social quagmires that, as Avent points out many times, we’re ill prepared as a society to easily solve."

Tim Cook and other Apple execs miss out on bonus pay after disappointing 2016
"Apple raked in $215.6 billion in sales in 2016, but it wasn't enough to keep the company from reporting its first year-over-year sales decline since 2001. According to the company's definitive proxy statement filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the company's sales declined from $233.7 billion in 2015, and its operating income likewise fell from $71.2 billion in 2015 to $60.0 billion in 2016. The decline in these two metrics was enough to significantly cut incentive-based pay for Tim Cook and a number of other high-level Apple executives."

Why A Bi-Modal Approach to Digital Transformation Is Just Stupid - by @rwang0
"Like fake news, the over hyped, bi-modal approach to IT and digital transformation is a flawed fallacy perpetuated by ivory tower, non-pragmatic legacy research firms. Lessons learned from successful digital transformation projects emphasize an organizational design comprised of six key virtual or physical teams."

"Anticipatory analytics, catalysts, and choices interact to power mass personalization at scale. Anticipatory analytics allow customers to “skate where the puck will be”. Catalysts provide offers or triggers for response. Choices allow customers to make their own decisions. Each individual or machine will have their own experience in contexts depending on identity, historical preferences, and needs at the time."

Apple’s latest foray into the enterprise involves deeper integration with Cisco - by @ron_miller
"Lost in the hubbub of today’s two hour-plus Apple WWDC keynote was an announcement of deep integration between Apple and Cisco in the upcoming release of iOS 10 — yes, you read it correctly, Cisco.

When it comes to enterprise partnerships, IBM has gotten the lion’s share of the attention. More recently, SAP made a high-profile partnership announcement of its own, but last August Apple and Cisco also announced an agreement."

2016 Mobile World Congress was All About the Virtual Reality
"The possibilities of VR and AR seem endless and rather compelling. When the education system catches up to the technology, we could live vicariously through Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon or walk among the Great Pyramids. If the world’s top physicians were able to simulate the resources available in the most remote parts of the world, they could then teach those village doctors life-saving techniques, offering the next-best-thing to hands-on, real-time experience."

What to Make of Amazon’s Work Practices? - by @msuster
"There is much discussion about this weekend’s article in the NY Times regarding Amazon’s work practices. People seem polarized between, “that’s what it takes to succeed” to “I can’t believe what a heartless, intolerant and misogynistic company culture they’ve built.” I’ve heard the gamut from reading opinions online and even hearing the debate in circles of my close friends and family."

Apple Music and Apple’s Focus - by @monkbent
"Two weeks ago I wrote about how Google I/O (members-only) was two separate keynotes: the beginning was about Google doing stuff primarily, at least as far as I could tell, because they were big; the second part was about Google furthering their original mission and doing what they do best — “Organize the World’s Information” — and it was incredibly compelling and exciting."

Apple Watch and Continuous Computing - by @monkbent
"That said, I do think there will be a bifurcation when it comes to the Watch’s relative importance vis-à-vis the smartphone between developed and developing countries: in the long run I do think that convenience trumps all, but there’s no denying a smartphone is already pretty darn convenient. To put it another way, if you can afford it I do think that there is a sufficient delta between Watch and iPhone functionality to make the former worth owning despite its dependence on the latter"

As such we track the events in the industry that may affect the FoW – and one key player in the space are technology vendors, e.g. Apple given the pervasiveness of iOS powered devices in the enterprise and its popularity with today’s workers."

The Evolution of Steve Jobs
"What emerged from these exclusive interviews—with Jony Ive and Tim Cook, Bill Gates and Bob Iger, and others, including Steve’s widow, Laurene Powell Jobs—was a very different picture of Jobs. Steve was someone with a deep hunger for learning, who breathed in an education wherever he could find it, from his youthful pilgrimage to India to his key mentors and his longtime colleagues at NeXT, Pixar, and Apple. Powell Jobs goes so far as to call him a "learning machine."
