The downfall of Theranos, from the journalist who made it happen
"More than anyone else, Carreyrou deserves credit for pulling the wool from so many credulous eyes regarding Theranos and its founder, Elizabeth Holmes. Outlets like Fortune and Wired were writing hagiographic puff pieces about this precocious college dropout and her plan to save the world; Carreyrou was pointing out inconvenient facts, like the company's inability to accurately conduct most of the hundreds of blood tests it claimed to have revolutionized. He credits pathologist Adam Clapper—who wrote the now-defunct Pathology Blawg—for tipping him off that something wasn't entirely right."

Beyond Bitcoin: Oracle, IBM Prepare Blockchains for Industrial Use
"For OpenWorld, Oracle launched a Blockchain-as-a-Service, to be released in early 2018. Review: Automation, Joblessness and the Vacuum of Tech Ethics - by @cote
"Increasingly, what people are finding is that it’s hard to find the types of jobs they know how to do, that pay what they’re expecting, and that aligns with their identity. The last two problems are especially vexing since so many service sector jobs are filling up labor growth curves. This space is full of social quagmires that, as Avent points out many times, we’re ill prepared as a society to easily solve."

The Rise Of Fake News Amidst The Fall Of News Media - by @tomforemski
"Googols of top neurons connecting over the Internet and we still haven't figured out a way to collect the true monetary value of professional news media so that it can be reinvested in producing more high quality media.

Since 2005, after leaving the Financial Times, I've warned that if we can't find a way to pay for professional media then society will pay for it in many unpleasant ways such as a rise of misinformation from special interest groups."

Review: New Books for Understanding DevOps - by @cote
"Where “Lean Enterprise” was an excellent sermon from the pulpit of DevOps (more like a sort of compendium thereof), the “DevOps Handbook” is more like a manual for putting The Good Work into practice. “Lean Enterprise” will sell you on why you should fix your organizations, help you understand a new way of thinking about organizations, and tenderize your mind to accept the instructions in the “DevOps Handbook.”

S&OP: Five Steps to Get Started - by @lcecere
"One of his dilemmas, within his organization, was the definition of the S&OP time horizon. The company had a strong manufacturing culture, and the focus was on the urgent. The S&OP process was currently owned by manufacturing leadership, and the focus was on a short-term duration of one-three months. We discussed the need for manufacturing leadership to cede ownership to the business and the organizational need to focus on S&OP as a tactical process from one-to-twelve months to drive the greatest business benefit."

Book Summary: Lesson 5 From Disrupting Digital Business – Build For Insight Streams - by @rwang0
"One of the biggest opportunities for monetizing digital business will come from insight streams. These insights will come from both least likely sources and the most obvious. For example, least likely sources include the amount of power consumer, water used, visitors into the building, foot traffic on the sidewalk, and density of the parking lot. These sources may seem mundane and useless information to most of us, but large insight brokers will take that data to drive contextually relevant information."

Book Summary: Lesson 2 From Disrupting Digital Business – Brand Promises In An Attention Economy - by @rwang0
"In fact, the impact is significant and now quantifiable with 52% of the Fortune 500 gone since 2000 and the average age of the S&P 500 company in 1960 is down from 60 years to a little more than 12 projected in 2020. That is a 500% compression that has changed the market landscape forever in almost every industry."
