5 Proven Ways Manufacturers Can Get Started With Analytics
" I believe they’re in a tough situation with customers wanting short-notice production time while supply chains often needing to be redesigned to reduce or eliminate tariffs. They’re turning to analytics to gain the insights they need to take on these challenges and more. The graphic below is from Gartner’s latest survey of heavy manufacturing CIOs, it indicates the technology areas where heavy manufacturing CIOs’ organizations will be spending the largest amount of new or additional funding in 2019 as well as the technology areas where their organizations will be reducing funding by the highest amount in 2019 compared with 2018"

The Costly, Damaging, and Futile Myth of Business & IT Alignment Replacing nonsensical ‘business and IT alignment’ with a newer, better environment
"Now is the ideal time to partition business and IT in such a fashion. The emerging viability of what has been somewhat arbitrarily grouped into ‘digital transformation’ assets (Big Data, Machine Learning, Internet-of-Things and Analytics) can only be successfully adopted by an organization with an efficient and credible foundation of integrated business applications. With business stakeholders firmly at the wheel, such efficiency and credibility are more easily achieved than through an alignment effort that has been a dismal failure since the days of manual typewriters, hi-fis, black & white television, and rotary telephones."

Why Microservices Will Become a Core Business Strategy for Most Organizations
"Microservices, by virtue of offering a well-structured way to engage and integrate with the world at large in scalable, digital terms, now appear to hold the answer to enabling faster digital transformation, lowering our levels of of tight coupling and technical debt, and substantially increasing much needed levels of IT integration. More centrally to business impact and growth, they also make it possible for us to build and cultivate bigger and more robust digital ecosystems with our stakeholders. This includes 3rd party developers and business partners to our very own workers and customers."

Zero Trust Security Update From The SecurIT Zero Trust Summit
"Identities, not systems, are the new security perimeter for any digital business, with 81% of breaches involving weak, default or stolen passwords. Tom Kemp, Co-Founder, and CEO, Centrify, provided key insights into the current state of enterprise IT security and how existing methods aren’t scaling completely enough to protect every application, endpoint, and infrastructure of any digital business. He illustrated how $86B was spent on cybersecurity, yet a stunning 66% of companies were still breached. Companies targeted for breaches averaged five or more separate breaches already. The following graphic underscores how identities are the new enterprise perimeter, making NGA and ZTS a must-have for any digital business."

The Commodity Container Story - by @fintanr
"This actually raises one of the thornier questions around using bleeding edge software such as Kubernetes. Enterprises, even the most forward looking, are somewhat conservative – and as such are generally going to be running at least one release behind (in areas such as operating systems we frequently see upgrades, beyond security patches, running out at least 18 months and beyond). There is a reason long term support is a lucrative source of revenue for vendors."

Voice and the Future of the Platform Companies - by @fintanr
"We have entered into an era where massive scale is a differentiator – and companies are happy to share the underlying work that has facilitated them operating at scale. Much of the emerging technology landscape, from cloud native to artificial intelligence, is being shaped by projects that companies, like Google and Facebook, have had a hand in either inspiring or creating. But if their revenue streams begin to be threatened will the model of openly publishing research and contributing to various projects change?"

Cloud Native Technologies in the Fortune 100 - by @fintanr
"Container usage, which, at its most basic level ostensibly maps to developers using Docker, is running at 71% across Fortune 100 companies. Kubernetes usage is running in some form at 54%, and Cloud Foundry usage is at 50%. In terms of public references with commercial suppliers Cloud Foundry leads the way, with twelve of the Fortune 100 publicly stating they are using Cloud Foundry, Docker and Kubernetes both have two public references. It is important to note that while public references are an interesting proxy, they are but the tip of the iceberg and in our conversations we hear of substantially more usage of the gambit of cloud native technologies."

Strategic Technology: Cloud Native Data Science - by @fintanr
"But there are serious difficulties. Standing up and maintaining Hadoop infrastructure is not for the faint hearted. As my colleague, James Governor, recently noted “that giant sucking sound is the sound of Hadoop being sucked into the cloud”. To paraphrase the “infrastructure as a product” mantra that we heard from the team at OpenAI, your big data infrastructure needs to be self-service and easily extendable. We have noted in the past that your big data infrastructure is just dial tone. The ability of your team to use it efficiently is far more important."

When It Comes to Digital Transformation, Change Agents Matter Most - by @dhinchcliffe
"This post was inspired by an inspired Twitter discussion this morning between myself, Tim Crawford, and Jim Canto about what the attributes of a change agent are. My take is shown above in the visual, and can be summarized as:

Can identify or develop valuable new ideas. Change agents don’t necessarily need to have ideas about change, they just need to recognize good ones.
Has social capital to spread ideas. Change agents have some resources to take their ideas and convince others to join in to help realize them, especially as CIO David Chou says, to navigate the political waters.."

The CIO is dead. Long live the CIO. -by @dealarchitect

Five Reasons Why Every CIO Needs An Integration Roadmap In 2017 - by @louiscolumbus
"The difference between CIOs who lead and those caught in never-ending reactionary cycles is often a strategic IT plan and integration roadmap. It’s the CIOs who take the time to create and pursue an integration roadmap that has the greatest chance of breaking out of always reacting to IT projects and leading them instead. That’s because the majority of inbound requests center on data, reports or analysis only deliverable by integrating two or more systems together."

Strategic Technology: Utilisation versus Business Velocity - by @fintanr
"here are four common problem threads that generally emerge once you start to dig into the companies. The first two are almost always immediately obvious – a very traditional IT department and business units operating in very discrete silos. The third is a little more insidious, it is the culture of blame embedded in the overall organisation. Most companies will talk of openness and transparency in their culture, but few companies have organisations that genuinely facilitate this openness and transparency. The final thread is that of mistaking tactical projects for strategic initiatives."

It’s Time to Transform ERP into a Systems of Engagement - by @dhinchcliffe
"When I look at most enterprise IT today however, it’s clear that the buyer is not the end-user but IT departments and other stakeholders who won’t have to use the systems themselves. The traditional ERP system, which runs much of the mission critical infrastructure, is possibly the worst offender and most in need of remediation in today’s era of highly consumable personal IT, which runs rings around most enterprise technology when it comes to usability, personalization, fitness to purpose, and responsive design."

Tuesday’s Tip: Seven Universal Factors Why Technology Firms Fail - by @rwang0
"Innovation. Vendors who fail to move to new platforms, slow the pace and quality of innovation, or not adapt to new trends would fail to make the transition to the next era. In many cases, the pile of technical debt from failing to innovate holds back the vendor’s ability to innovate. Slashing of R&D and innovation budgets, departure of key founders and executives, and the failure to attract new talent signify impending failure."

The cloud will demote the CIO in 2017 - by @davidlinthicum
"Second, CIOs are considered obstacles to productivity and are now often left out of the loop. In the past, CIOs had to be in the loop because the departments got their applications and compute resources through IT. However, given the time required to get needed systems up and running, departments have become good at working around the CIOs—typically with the CEO’s and board’s at least tacit blessing. The cloud has enabled this as well."

News Analysis: Plex Adds Supply Chain Planning With DemandCaster Acquisition - by @rwang0
"Prospects can keep Plex in the short lists for Manufacturing Cloud. While large vendors such as Oracle and SAP try to move down market, prospects continue to complain about the high cost of ownership and complexity despite a cloud delivery. Smaller competitors Rootstock and Kenandy still lack the full functionality of Plex. Netsuite’s acquisition by Oracle may cause some distractions during post-merger integration. The result – limited players in the space."
