Yowza! A Nine-Step Decision Process to Help Guide Supply Chain Planning Selection
"A business decision for supply chain planning should focus on the selection of the technology that can drive better business outcomes. This often in direct opposition with the solution that minimizes the IT budget. For example, there are very few planning pilots where Oracle or SAP beat the competition on capabilities. I often tell clients, “What good is a cheap solution if it does not solve the business problem?” A focus on IT standardization is one of the primary reason for low business user satisfaction in the recent study shown in Figure 5."

Parts Are Not Parts
"Today, management of the supply chain is harder. Supply chain management is more complex. It requires the oversight of a nonlinear, and often very unpredictable, system. Systems thinking is tough for people with a transactional mindset. And we find many teams within a company are very transactional."

How Can I Drive Lights-Out Planning? - by @lcecere
"Yesterday, I facilitated a group of business leaders attempting to drive innovation in supply chain practices. The last five years were tough for the group. With five serial years of Draconian cost-cutting efforts and downsizing, the team has been heads-down trying to survive. For many years, the focus was overcoming day-to-day hurdles. In addition, the company, for the first time in a decade, is struggling to grow. As a result, there has been little time for reflection. Conferences, external training, or educational forums took a back seat."

Trust, But Verify - by @lcecere #scm
"Avoid a System Integrator’s Recommendation. System integrators usually get a commission on the sale of the software. They are usually not a neutral party. Ask your system integrator for details on their arrangement with the software provider. Buyer beware!"

Mining Supply Chain Data for Insights - by @lcecere
"So if a technology vendor in supply chain planning promises improvements in costs and inventory, be wary. Pour the coffee strong. However, do not throw the baby out with the bath water. Planning can drive results if the organization has the right DNA. Focus on defining supply chain excellence and the appropriate use of the technologies. Test and verify results and build planning into data-driven processes. Do not treat supply chain planning as a typical technology project focused on implementation. Instead, refine the data model and test outcomes."

Cognitive Computing: Getting Clear on Definitions - by @lcecere #scm
"A hype cycle starts with a technology trigger. In the case of cognitive computing, the trigger is the use of sensor technologies along with in-memory processing to sense, learn and act. We are witnessing the evolution of analytics for pattern recognition, and unstructured text mining along with the redefinition of architectures to enable streaming data and real-time process innovation. The work by Google on manless vehicles or the department of defense’s work on ‘bad guy detection’ spawned early innovation. Despite the powerful and brilliant, IBM Watson marketing machine, realize that it is still early. Only 7% of manufacturers are experimenting with cognitive computing."

"The biggest and most detrimental shifts in market drivers occurred in the Technology Value Chain. Post-recession negative market winds blew strong in this value chain. It is a case of when the going gets tough, the tough get going."

VTech: A Story of a Supply Chain Leader - by @lcecere
"So, getting back to the story, at the time, there were at least three different forecasts (sales/financial/production) and none were the same, and how would they be reconciled? Legacy technology applications were completely unaligned. I asked, how do we align these? We realized that there was a need for a single trigger. Point of sale data needed to drive all processes. If you knew what the retailer was going to sell (POS) then the calculation as to what the retailer would buy was a simple mathematical calculation. The way that we got there, was to abandon the push forecast for pull demand and replenish what the retailer wants to sell. We went from push planning to pull-based demand planning over the course of a year."

Supply Chain 2030: Forge a New Path - by @lcecere
"The supporting data will be self-correcting. I believe that we will have no master data managers in the age of Supply Chain 2030 and that the systems will be self-correcting with continual learning. It will be easier. The supply chain planner’s role today is too hard."

Is A Customer-Centric Strategy the Same as Demand-Driven? Outside-In? - by @lcecere
"I asked the group to think of demand-driven concepts as the enabler of customer-centric strategies. They are not the same, and the delivery of a demand-driven strategy does not mean the company will enable a customer-centric supply chain, or build/implement outside-in processes. These are three different, but complementary, concepts. It requires awareness and conscious choice."

Go Horizontal! - by @lcecere #scm
"By definition, the silos struggle to align. Substantial gaps exist between the operations teams and finance, the operations teams and new product launch, and the operations teams and the sales/commercial teams. Closing these gaps is essential to driving a growth strategy. In our research we see that the successful implementation of horizontal processes helps to close these gaps."

No Easter Bunny? - by @lcecere #scm
"Build a scrappy, cross-functional team to test and learn using new forms of analytics. Give this team a mission. Don’t let them drift. Build the charter of this cross-functional team with the goal in mind. Give the team something that is mission critical, and then market the impact of their contributions."

Three Reasons Why I Love Hadoop, and You Should Too! - by @lcecere
In essence, what we built through these first and second generation applications, that we term forecasting is order prediction not market forecasting. Why is this a problem? The tactical processes of forecasting in this conventional analysis cannot sense markets fast enough to slow or speed up processes."

Seven Thoughts to Build a Customer-Centric Supply Chain Organization - by @lcecere

Gaining Clarity on Inventory Effectiveness - by @lcecere
"In business there are many drivers of inventory, and the management of inventory levels requires discipline and a cross-functional focus. The rise of the global multinational has greatly impacted inventory requirements. How so? In today’s global supply chain there is more in-transit inventory and complexity."

Using the Bits: Building Digital Outside-In Processes - by @lcecere
"CRM and SRM Are Not the Adapters to Build the End-t0-End Value Chain. Customer relationship management (CRM) and supplier relationship management (SRM) are enterprise applications. They are not suitable connectors for B2B networks. The connections to B2B networks need to be based on trading partner synchronization and harmonization of data through the use of canonical infrastructures."
