The work by Google on manless vehicles or the department of defense’s work on ‘bad guy detection’ spawned early innovation. Despite the powerful and brilliant, IBM Watson marketing machine, realize that it is still early. Only 7% of manufacturers are experimenting with cognitive computing."

"So, getting back to the story, at the time, there were at least three different forecasts (sales/financial/production) and none were the same, and how would they be reconciled? Legacy technology applications were completely unaligned. I asked, how do we align these? We realized that there was a need for a single trigger. Point of sale data needed to drive all processes. If you knew what the retailer was going to sell (POS) then the calculation as to what the retailer would buy was a simple mathematical calculation. The way that we got there, was to abandon the push forecast for pull demand and replenish what the retailer wants to sell. We went from push planning to pull-based demand planning over the course of a year."

They are not the same, and the delivery of a demand-driven strategy does not mean the company will enable a customer-centric supply chain, or build/implement outside-in processes. These are three different, but complementary, concepts. It requires awareness and conscious choice."
