US survey says shoppers want less automation, more human interaction with customer service
"The report revealed that, despite misconceptions of robots taking over, consumers still want human interaction while navigating digital assets. What’s more, they don’t expect, nor want technology to replace real people. It’s true consumers are open-minded about using technology like chatbots that save time and make life easier. But they still trust humans to help solve more complex problems and make experiences such as online shopping, filling a prescription or making a bank deposit — more enjoyable."

What’s Missing From Gartner’s 2018 Magic Quadrant For CPQ
"Magic quadrants and market analysis grids are designed to guide enterprise buyers to the best possible technologies for their needs. The recently published Gartner Magic Quadrant for Configure, Price, and Quote (CPQ) Application Suites, 2018 (client access reqd.) doesn’t address the most challenging problem enterprises face making CPQ strategies work, which is enterprise-wide systems integration. Members of the CPQ vendor landscape are growing complacent and need to intensify innovation efforts too."

The Era of Microsoft on Windows-Only Is Over – OMG - by @merv
"The momentum is clear. Gartner Software Market numbers show that Microsoft passed IBM in total DBMS revenues in 2014 and is now second only to Oracle. In 2016 overall DBMS revenues grew at 7.7 percent and Microsoft grew at 10.3 percent, strengthening its #2 position, while Oracle grew 3.3 percent – off a much larger base that includes the Linux workloads Microsoft did not compete for."

Event-Driven Architecture Is the Wave of the Future
"Gartner calls EDA a design paradigm. At its highest level, a software component, or event, executes a response to receiving one or more event notifications. A key feature is that the server component that sends the notification does not know which component is on the receiving end."

Google Cloud Spanner Enters With a Splash - co-authored by @merv
"Last week, Google launched its internal Cloud Spanner DBMS into a public beta. Claiming to be both strongly consistent (like a relational DBMSs) and horizontally scalable (like NoSQL DBMSs), Cloud Spanner’s internal use has given Google time to exploit unique physical characteristics of its cloud."

Gartner Purchase of Corporate Executive Board Would Address Changes in IT Advisory Market
"Despite their big advantages, the big IT analyst shops face disruption. They face perpetual accusations of pay-for-play bias. Many techies say they know more about the topics than the analyst briefing them. A three-part podcast hosted by Kea Company describes how many smaller companies address these shortcomings."

TNS Research: What We Know about Cloud Market Share
"Microsoft doesn’t break out its cloud revenue between Azure and Office 365, nor does Alphabet (Google’s parent company) distinguish between Google Cloud Platform and other cloud apps (now collectively called G Suite). Until this happens, most news about cloud market share is speculation or cloud-washing."

Bimodal IT: What’s Not to Like?
"“It’s a big fallacy,” he said, referring to how the bimodal concept breaks enterprise IT operations into two distinct camps — those supporting legacy IT applications where change is slow and hampered by corporate policy, and those building new cloud-based apps, where change is driven at a quicker pace by business development."

Microsoft Links Into a Treasure Trove of Information - via @merv
"So Microsoft will be limited only by its imagination. Oh, and an ability to execute. It must also tread carefully. Toeing “the creepy line” would be ill-advised. Monetization methods which could alienate corporate users or violate regional PII regulations will result in platform abandonment nearly as rapidly as teens jump from one messaging app to another in today’s consumer world. An opt-in model that respects its participants, or involves an obvious quid-pro-quo, will have greater long term B2B value."

Dissenting views on Windows 10 privacy
No, my dissenting view was not included here. :) It’s also worth noting that since I’ve published my Searchlight column on this topic, it’s already garnered two comments from people who believe the Windows 10 privacy “ruckus” was definitely not overblown: one from a software delivery consultant and the other from a director and producer."

Perspectives on Hadoop Part Two: Pausing Plans - by @merv
"In this post, Nick and I turn from Procurement to Plans and examine the buying intentions uncovered in Gartner surveys. We recently described some of our findings in the Gartner research note Survey Analysis: Hadoop Adoption Drivers and Challenges, and since its publication we’ve been inundated by questions about why “Gartner is so negative about Hadoop.”

Perspectives on Hadoop: Procurement, Plans, and Positioning - by @merv
"Examining that data provides a useful perspective on where Hadoop is today. One of the vendors – Oracle – measures its DBMS revenue in 10s of billions of dollars, while 4 others – Microsoft, IBM, SAP and Teradata – do so an order of magnitude lower, in billions. Collectively, they represent 92.1% of actual spending in 2014 on DBMS."

Hadoop Questions from Recent Webinar Span Spectrum - by @merv
"There were many questions asked after the last quarterly Hadoop webinar, and Nick and I have picked a few that were asked several times to respond to here. Just to be clear, we don’t generally give deep advice in blog posts – our blogs are descriptive, not prescriptive. Gartner clients submit inquiries, and justifiably think that since they are paying for the privilege, we should reserve that for them."
