How to Estimate ERP and HCM Implementation Time
"Magnitude of change. The bigger the change this project will mean for your company, the longer it will take.
Number of locations. A higher number of locations requires more time to accommodate different operations.
Number of countries. A higher number of countries in scope requires more time to accommodate different cultures.
Complexity of your operations. The more complex and unique your operations, the longer it will take you to implement.
Your internal competencies. The less implementation experience and capabilities your internal team has, the longer the project will likely take."

ERP vs. HCM Implementations: Which is the Better Bet?
"HCM may affect a larger population of people than an ERP or CRM implementation, but they can actually deliver more value with less risk. For industries that spend too much on employee retention and morale-related issues each year, better performance management, learning and development, and other human capital capabilities can deliver much higher business benefits than having more efficient accounting or inventory management competencies."

What is an Agile ERP Implementation?
"ile is not an excuse to do less work. The real lesson here is that your project methodology is not the key determinant of success. Setting clear project objectives, defining effective organizational communication methods, and committing to an engaged and strong project governance structure are all crucial regardless of how you approach your project."

A Perspective on Data Migration in Digital Transformation
"The system integrator is typically only tasked with the main ERP system, therefore isn’t incentivized to ensure downstream systems/reporting are able to properly process the outputs. Many careers have been derailed when a CEO, COO or CFO is unpleasantly surprised by the poor condition of data appearing in their new executive dashboards and reports. Proper data readiness planning can significantly reduce post-project surprises."

Self-Serve ERP Software Please
"ERP software has evolved to the point where it can allow a self-serve methodology to work efficiently and potentially save companies money. Algorithms help point clients in the right direction towards ready-to-use pathways. When done right, this is a win-win. The client gets to interact/transact in their preferred way, and the company can redeploy its human assets."

Musings - What enterprises want from their HCM Suites
"The best practices of running payroll when ready and needed are by now archaic. Real-time payroll information has quickly become standard for both employees and managers who want and need to make smart payroll-related decisions. The “always-on” payroll allows better transparency into pay-related information and processes. Benefits for all constituents in the process are tangible, so it’s good to see technology progress—largely powered by cheaper computing in the cloud—enabling these next-level best practices."

Progress Report - ADP Analyst Day 2019 - Ready for Prime Time
"On the concern side, it is now for ADP to show that it not only can build very good and visionary products, but also sell them into the market – to both prospects and the install base. This is always the 2nd step after building product, and with an industry mostly building product (e.g. payroll), ADP is in the lead in terms of maturity and now needs to convert that lead into customers and revenue. ADP will also have to ramp up its partner efforts and move from its largely inhouse implementation to a partner driven model. This allows ADP to keep focusing investment into products."

Bridging the Gap Between ERP Implementation vs. Business Transformation
"Organizations generally struggle to unlock the value of their ERP implementations or digital transformations to their full potential. For many, it can be hard to deliver much more than mere incremental improvements as part of their transformations.

This problem isn’t necessarily due to lack of software capabilities. Though many are lacking the maturity of past legacy solutions, the current leading ERP and HCM systems such as S/4HANA, Oracle Cloud ERP, Microsoft Dynamics 365, and others contain advanced technologies that many will simply never be able to consume."

Why Do ERP Implementations Really Fail?
"This all leads us to the key question: why do ERP implementations really fail? It’s not because of the symptoms outlined above. Instead, ERP failure can typically be traced to three primary root causes:

Misalignment. If your team isn’t on the same page about what this digital transformation means to your company and how it supports a bigger-picture strategy, then it is likely to lead to the problems outlined above. Without alignment from the top of the organization on down, the project team simply cannot have clear direction and will struggle to gain consensus on decisions."

Fatal Flaws in the Digital Transformation and ERP Software Industry
"This is the first time in my career where all the major players are releasing relatively new and unproven flagship products. For example, while SAP spent roughly 20 years fine-tuning its R/3 product, S/4HANA has only been on the market for a few years. The number of customers successfully using this new product is relatively small. The kinks haven’t been worked out and the breadth of functionality simply isn’t there yet.

The same is true for Oracle ERP Cloud, Microsoft Dynamics 365, and other top ERP systems. In some cases, the vendors have rewritten the software from scratch (example: Oracle). In other cases, they have pieced together the “best of” older flagship products (example: Microsoft). In most cases, these products are not as ready for prime time as their predecessors were."

The Benefits of Business Process Framing
"In selecting and implementing a new enterprise system, business leaders have learned the importance of evaluating business processes. However, they often think that this means they should begin with detailed process mapping of their existing processes. We propose a better way: Begin with an exercise we call business process framing. In this post we provide a definition of process framing, explain the differences between process framing and process mapping, and outline the benefits of beginning with process framing before moving on, selectively, to process mapping."

Progress Report - Workday Innovation Summit 2019 - Workday doubles down on AI and Skills
"On the concern side, Workday’s move to the public cloud is … slow. When asked, Bhusri foresees probably two more hardware refresh cycles in the Workday data centers… translated, that means he sees full public cloud 4-6 years out. Operationally that maybe fine, but from the AI / ML perspective obstructional to implement any deep learning on customer data. Workday is to a certain point lucky, as HR and Finance are somewhat moving slower than e.g. Commerce, IoT etc. I also missed (at least a demo refresh / update) on voice as the new UX, as this is most transformation for the sporadic nature of HCM interactions.

Event Report - Ultimate UltiConnect - More mobile, more Zander and a new tech stack
"On the concern side, Ultimate needs to find the development speed to move all its offerings to a consistent UX. The ‘gamble’ of a mobile only approach may work out, but the next year will have to show if Ultimate can extend the mobile capabilities beyond employee, manager and (some) HR admin capabilities, of will have to go back to fundamental renovation / innovation of the browser UX. A leaner architecture is key, and we will see if Ultimate has the discipline to deliver towards that. That will make it easier to run in hybrid mode, though we would like a vendor not to spend on inhouse data center re-freshs in 2019."

The irony is that it usually predicts product issues and delays, and that is not the case for ADP at the moment. News Analysis - SAP keep - re-organizing - Fox-Martin in charge of ww sales, Enslin out, replaced by Morgan
"SAP’s board organization doesn’t come to peace, and with that stability that is key for execution. Except for Finance, HR and Services – every board area has been changed, re-organized in the course of 6 months. I can’t think of such a board level change happening at SAP … ever. And the next change is already announced, as Kleinemeier stayed an extra year to keep doing the work that Leukert was supposed to take over. Organization need stability on the top, and changes on the top have repercussions many levels down the organization, all the way to middle management changing. In a traditionally stable culture like SAP these changes are especially challenging, as networks have operated over decades, that are now changing. But change can be for the better, so we will have to see what happens."

Event Report - Ceridian Insights 2018 - Ceridian is on a roll
"On the concern side, Ceridian needs to push the envelope in the direction of Machine Learning / AI in general and voice as the new UI more. Last year at the user conference the vendor showed the most impressive voice demos of all HCM vendors in 2017 – a worker talking to Alexa (?) for an understanding of their shift situation and executing a shift swap. No demo this year, the vendor citing keynote time reasons… Behind an effective Machine Learning / AI strategy is the move to public cloud, to be able to leverage cheaper compute, spare capacity, low cost storage and overall compute elasticity. And Ceridian says the Dayforce suite runs on public cloud IaaS (I think Azure) but needs to move there for good. Progress Report - SAP SuccesFactors - More SAP (technology)
"SuccessFactors is making progress, but the pace seems to be glacial. Realistically using more of SAP technology, a good decision overall, means even more ‘plumbing’ work by R&D resources vs. ‘sun deck’ work (building SaaS capabilities). But it is an investment SAP should make, with the expectation of better productivity and more functionality being shipped in a few years – latest."

Event Report - NetSuite SuiteWorld 2018 - NetSuite goes Global and Oracle
"On the concern side, NetSuite may not be moving fast enough yet. It needs to move to 30, then 50 supported countries fast, to e.g. counter and lead vis a vis other large ERP vendors SMB products (starts with an S…). And while I always like when vendors go back and fix something (the Commerce offering), it does not make sense for NetSuite to play in the space, while e.g. not having a full HCM Suite, no clear CRM strategy , some holes in SCM and so on. So, NetSuite not only needs to move fast, but also smart, which the vendor is doing on most aspects, but needs to do more. For instance, NetSuite needs to announce the next 10 or better 20 target countries for its Globalization / Localization plans, so customers can plan their roll outs accordingly."
