Smart Machines Are The Future Of Manufacturing
"Capturing IIoT’s full value potential will require more sophisticated integrated approaches than current automation protocols provide. IIoT manufacturing systems are quickly becoming digital manufacturing platforms that integrate ERP, MES, PLM and CRM systems to provide a single unified view of product configurations and support the design-to-manufacturing process."

Seven Things You Need To Know About IIoT In Manufacturing
"IIoT platforms are beginning to replace MES and related applications, including production maintenance, quality, and inventory management, which are a mix of Information Technology (IT) and Operations Technology (OT) technologies. IoT Analytics is seeing IIoT platforms begin to replace existing industrial software systems that had been created to bridge the IT and OT gaps in manufacturing environments. Their research teams are finding that IIoT Platforms are an adjacent technology to these typical industrial software solutions but are now starting to replace some of them in smart connected factory settings. The following graphic explains how IoT Analytics sees the IIoT influence across the broader industrial landscape."

How Edge Computing Will Deliver on the Promise of 5G
"That’s because it’s not meant for us. Like most technological advancements, industry will come first. The promise of 5G is in swarms of drones and fleets of autonomous vehicles. It’s in lightweight industrial wearables that process crucial information rapidly. It’s in robots. And, yes, it’s in the augmented reality game we’ve all been waiting for, “Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.”

This promise of 5G will be most likely delivered on the edge, taking it from conference marketing to real-world feasibility. In fact, 4G can already deliver a 5G-like experience with edge computing."

Xage introduces fingerprinting to protect industrial IoT devices
"You may be wondering where the blockchain comes into this, but imagine a honey pot of these fingerprints were stored in a conventional database. If that database were compromised, it would mean hackers could have access to a company’s entire store of fingerprints, completely neutering that idea. That’s where the blockchain comes in."

Sticky Robo-Bees Could Help Artificially Pollinate Plants As Bees Die Off
"Created by researchers over from the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Japan, this pollinating robot uses a readily available $100 plastic drone with four propellers. On the underside of the device is a small patch of horsehair, which allows this rob0-bee to gingerly picking up pollen from a plant, using a sticky ionic liquid gel that been spread on the hair. The idea is to mimic how pollen gets stuck on the bodies of insects when they visit flowering plants, which is then transported to cross-pollinate the next plant."

‘Robot Tamer’ Reprograms Industrial Robots to Be Curious about Living Creatures
"Hoping to counter this somewhat irrational fear of robots, Gannon’s most recent collaboration (with the development team of Julián Sandoval, Kevyn McPhail and Ben Snell) is the creation of Mimus, an one-ton ABB IRB 6700 industrial robot that has been reprogrammed to respond to human interaction with an animal-like curiosity, currently on exhibition at London’s Design Museum."

Is the IoT hype justified? Will it change everything, or is it a passing fad? - by @tomraftery
"But the smart home Internet of Things is not yet living up to the hype. The Google Nest, for example only sold 1.3m devices in 2015. All these Things are supposed to offer more convenience, so why aren’t they flying off the shelves?"

GE Digital Provides a Report of Progress on Digital Industrial Efforts
"GE Digital executives went to great lengths to point out their belief that industrial based IoT applications and network opportunities will be a far larger market segments that consumer focused IoT applications, pegging the latter segment as greater than $225 billion by 2020. That stated, during open Q&A, executives indicated a belief the 2017-18 timeframe will be the point of industry inflection in IoT enabled efforts. From this author’s lens, that is fairly consistent with comments and observations we’ve heard from other IoT focused technology and services providers."
