Event Report - AWS reinvent 2018 - Push, push - AI and hardware
"On the concern side, the AWS portfolio is broader and deeper than ever before. AWS keeps staying with the Chinese menu philosophy, and it means massive choice… but staying with the analogy, when a Chinese restaurant adds a full menu every year, even the most loyal customers will have a hard time to keep an overview of the menu – and manage to repeat-order the same dishes (aka products) at the next visit (aka implementation project)"

Predicting The Future Of Digital Marketplaces
"Competitive differentiation, buyer retention, buyer acquisition, and social media engagement and the four most common customer-facing challenges marketplaces face today. 39% of marketing execs say that differentiating from competitors is the greatest challenge, followed by buyer retention (32%), buyer acquisition (29%) and effective social media campaigns (29%) Further validation that today’s digital marketplaces are enabling greater digital transformation through personalization is found in just 22% of respondents said customer experience is a challenge."

Key Takeaways from Dreamforce 2018
"Bundling products and going to market with product platforms and/or bundles is a common tactic of IT vendors and especially cloud vendors. Even cable companies use this tactic to strengthen vendor lock-in and increase adoption. If more companies purchase the bundled offering, the vendor has the ability to report higher adoption rates of the products that make up the bundle regardless of how many companies are actually using that particular product. Bundles like Salesforce’s Customer 360 also make it significantly harder for customers to walk away since multiple aspects of their business now depend on Salesforce to function."

Event Report - Salesforce Dreamforce 2018 - AI, Apple & Customer 360 - but where is the CRM thought leadership?
"It was the usual mega event for Salesforce, it’s partners and its users. Attendees were optimistic and looking forward on innovation to come in 2019. Good to see the shift towards more neural network-based AI, which at the moment is clearly the AI technology of choice. Good to keep Einstein’s voice efforts cross platform. But details were not shared – where does Salesforce plan to build all these models, where does the data have to be, etc. Good to see what MuleSoft is ultimately about, pulling off Customer 360 – if Salesforce managed to implement this architecture (and get customer to pay for it) – it may justify the princely cost of MuleSoft. To be fair – that is little of concern for Salesforce users, who they want to see value coming form their vendor overall, across the product suite."

Why Microservices Will Become a Core Business Strategy for Most Organizations
"Microservices, by virtue of offering a well-structured way to engage and integrate with the world at large in scalable, digital terms, now appear to hold the answer to enabling faster digital transformation, lowering our levels of of tight coupling and technical debt, and substantially increasing much needed levels of IT integration. More centrally to business impact and growth, they also make it possible for us to build and cultivate bigger and more robust digital ecosystems with our stakeholders. This includes 3rd party developers and business partners to our very own workers and customers."

FinancialForce Leverages the Power of the Salesforce Platform
"Beyond the Lightning Experience, the Salesforce Platformmakes it possible to quickly and easily deliver microservices in any development language, including Ruby, Java, JavaScript, C++, Python, and Node.js. The result is a “Lego-like” component that can be easily plugged into FinancialForce as an extension without mucking around in the source code of the application, extending the functionality with minimal disruption."

Musings - Why splitting Windows is Nadella's first major mistake
"Platform Morphing beats Platform Abandonment. You don’t split a platform, even when it is old. You renovate it (see e.g. IBM with Z/OS), you re-platform it (see Microsoft with Windows 10), you innovate (see Apple OS X) or you morph it to where it needs to be and where to evolve towards. Nadella is right that in the very long run, the PC is dead. And certainly, the cloud and the edge are showing more growth. But the industry has not come up with an alternative to the PC - yet. You can call the Chromebooks something else than a PC, but the form factor, connectivity is practically the same device. This is where Windows may have to morph, to maybe a browser based OS, and Microsoft has very much the assets (and the ambition) in play with Edge. And a micro Edge browser could very well work on the IoT edge. Wait – we have even have a perfect branding head line – Microsoft Edge for the IoT Edge – with all the good Windows DNA should that IoT edge platform need to get a little more beefier. Wait there is also Windows Server… so morph, position… even “embrace and extend” – remember that? Why no more in 2018?"

Internet of Things Platforms: Microsoft Azure vs. Google Cloud Platform vs. Amazon Web Services
"Far in the lead in the cloud computing race is Amazon Web Services, Amazon’s own cloud offering. Among its main features are infrastructure as a service, cloud storage solutions, database system management, application and content migration, developer tools that make development faster, as well as machine learning capabilities. IoT-targeted features are available through the AWS IoT platform."

Kenandy Customers Find a New Home With Rootstock - by @erp_cindyjutras
"So, given the similarities between the two, this begs the ultimate question regarding products moving forward: Will the resulting combined company continue to develop, maintain and support two distinct products? And should it? Mr. Garrehy has already made it clear that the Kenandy product will live on, and has further speculated that the combined company will likely have two distinct product lines, serving at least somewhat different markets. While not cast in stone, perhaps the Kenandy ERP will move in the direction of light manufacturing and distribution, while the Rootstock product will support heavy-duty, more complex manufacturing."

Let the platform wars begin - by @denispombriant
"Other vendors, for instance Amazon with AWS and some others, see a different need and work to meet it. But primarily providing cloud infrastructure only addresses half of the challenge and amounts to saving money. That’s a great thing but when faced with making or saving money, 10 out of 9 (I said that right) executives who are given a choice will opt for making in money over simply saving it."

The Home Depot joined today as a Foundation Gold member, with two seats on the board. Unless you’re familiar with open source foundations and how they work, the 40% might not surprise you. However, while Aneel Bhusir, CEO Workday mentioned that they are working with ISV’s there are no actual announcements on applications. Summer 2017 News Analysis - SAP Leonard event July 2017 - by @holgermu
"CxOs know that the 20th century best practices will not keep their enterprise in the survival race of the early 21st century. Design Thinking work shops are nothing new, and have proven themselves in the past. What is new is that an enterprise software vendor of the caliber of SAP is ready to partner with enterprises to establish these new best practices. This ensures integration with the rest of SAP automation and the potential bonus of becoming part of the roadmap. In the traditional approach it was clear that the work would always remain a custom effort – with the associated integration burden and maintenance costs following from a custom effort"

Event Report - #GoogleNext17 - Google makes progress - but is it fast enough? - by @holgermu
"On the concern side, it is not clear if this will be enough, I asked the Greene leadership team on what they will do to catchup from ‘Bronze to Gold’ and they all came up with good and plausible answers (check out my Storify of the analyst event here). But in a year where we may see VMware running on AWS and Oracle making its cloud work first time – this may not be enough for Google to get on premises load of scale. So it all comes back to the speed of Google being able to attract enterprise load for the next few years, and the speed of the enterprise moving to cloud."

Platform as a Platform (PaaP) - by @denispombriant
"All vendors know they have to provide an elegant approach to integrating whatever is on a customer’s site. Of course, this goes double for the legacy systems every business runs. The legacy systems might have analogs on every vendor’s platform but legacy systems also go by the name of foundation systems, responsible for a business’s bread, butter, and profits. Businesses are thus naturally cautious about upsetting the apple cart so integration is a critical need."

Positioning Platform Businesses - by @barnes_hank
"My recommendation would be to start with positioning for the consumers–the ultimate customers. Create the model around what they need and want, your value to them and your competitive differentiation for them. A big aspect of that value and differentiation is likely (it almost has to be) intrinsic to the business model. For example, the value for Android phones are Android Apps—and an easy way to acquire them via Appstores."
