News Analysis - Oracle Unveils New Programs that Transform how Customers Buy and Consume Cloud – Gloves Off - by @holgermu
"For the industry, its key to watch how well Oracle can move customers to cloud (or cloud at customer). For Oracle competitors, massive potential could disappear. As Constellation estimates that 30-40% of on premise systems are either Oracle systems, or systems so closely connected to an Oracle system – this is a key development to watch – to determine the overall move of the on-premise load to public cloud (the other one is the VMware / AWS partnership)."

Summer 2017 News Analysis - Workday announces its PaaS - by @holgermu
"Workday has long held the record of most closed major SaaS property in the market. The moniker was something along the lines that “SaaS knows no customization”. A valid point, but only to the degree that enterprises must be able to run their business. At the moment enterprises can’t run their business anymore the pressure on vendors grows very quickly to provide better extension, customization and sometimes even stand-alone software building options."

Summer 2017 News Analysis - Oracle invests in IaaS (or at least CAPEX) - by @holgermu
"You can’t build out a cloud in the real world without massive CAPEX investment. Look at the AWS / Amazon, Microsoft Azure and Google numbers. On the flip side Oracle execs are smart enough to not throw good money after bad money – e.g. put CAPEX $s in a non-working cloud infrastructure. So, at any chance given to me since 2014 I asked CEO Mark Hurd – when will Oracle spend more CAPEX? The answer has always been evasive… But at its OpenWorld conference, Oracle unveiled the 2nd generation of its IaaS solution. It now seems to get the CAPEX it needs to get real."

Event Report - SAP Capital Markets and S/4HANA Update - Good Plan - Execution matters in 2017
"On the concern side, talk is cheap and slides are patient. SAP must deliver and execute in 2017 to get S/4 HANA cloud out of a sleeping beauty style deep sleep. Bigdata capabilities, PaaS functionality and Machine Learning are quickly becoming table stakes for enterprises, so speed is of the essence."

Strategic Planning Is A Mindset! - by @infullbloomus
"Do you think this way naturally about every aspect of your life? Few people, including me, do so, but it is possible to train our brains to be analytical, to think critically, and to reflect carefully on how to get from where we are to where we want to be. Of one thing you can be sure: without exception, if you don’t know where you’re going, if you haven’t set goals quite firmly, then you sure as hell won’t know when you’ve achieved them and, even worse, you may waste your life wandering around without having accomplished anything."

Progress Report - Salesforce has a platform vision - 2017 it has to get real - by @holgermu
"On the differentiation side, we are not so sure if Salesforce has hit the mark, but that would require more detailed product roadmap / plan analysis than a 2 day analyst meeting can deliver. What is clear is that for the first-time Salesforce is offering a strategic path to rid itself of its in-house infrastructure. As founder Parker Harris correctly observed, IaaS was not around when Salesforce was started… but by now it is best practice for a SaaS (and PaaS) provider to be based on an IaaS and leave the heavy lifting (and investing) to the IaaS players."

Event Report - Kronos KronosWorks - Solid progress and big things loom - by @holgermu
"On the concern side Kronos must keep managing the transition and innovate in its product. The current architecture is adequate, but not how you want a workforce management product be for the next 10 years to come. The good news is that Kronos has done the heavy lifting, moving to an API architecture, even more interesting being used as an API layer for Workforce Management capabilities by large enterprises who have opted in building their own Time and Attendance / Absence Management."

Event Report - IBM World of Watson - IBM's bets its future on Watson - by @holgermu
"On the concern side, IBM needs to make sure not lose the eye on ‘bread and butter’ business, e.g. buried in the announcements was a new, HTAP enabled version of DB2. That by itself would have carried a conference by itself not too many years ago. And pretty much all the solutions talk general capability with a grey line between Watson capabilities, product capabilities and what smart consultants are making possible. Prospects and customers want and need to know what are product vs. services capabilities, as the mix creates a very different value proposition. Hiding behind ‘it’s all about the solution’ won’t work for long, as tangible AI platform capabilities are key to evolve solutions that are powered by them."

Event Report - Zenefits Z2 event - Good start for the very SMB - by @holgermu
"On the concern side, Zenefits has lost some time to restart its offering. In the meantime, the competition has not stood still, and has equally simplified its products (e.g. Paychex) or extended its footprint (e.g. partner Gusto). And payroll is crucial to get right for enterprises small and large. A bad payroll run derails equally all work at an enterprise of any size. So expanding payroll footprint should be a priority for Zenefits."

First Take - Microsoft Ignite - AI, Adobe and FPGA [From the Fences] - by @holgermu
"On the concern side Microsoft needs to stretch the rubber between where it needs to be vis a vis the competition (there most notably AWS and Google) and at the same time where its customers are. There is a lot for customers to digest, understand and bring back to their executive teams for the adoption conversation. Making the case to a CIO’s peers was something that Microsoft has room to improve on, and at the same time needs to make sure their customer base does not get overwhelmed. Sometimes less is more. But a good problem to have."

Progress Report - ADP Analyst Day 2016 - ADP has turned around Vantage HCM - by @holgermu
"On the concern side ADP cannot afford to rest. While the current UI is still appealing, it is no longer as fresh and in tune with the latest innovations in UI that are happening these days. Likewise its Data Cloud is on the right architecture and platform, given these decisions were taken 2+ years ago, but a fresh start today may consider other platforms, designs and architectures."

Event Report - Box BoxWorks - Box is on the run - now with a platform - by @holgermu
"On the concern side there was little progress and announcement on the machine learning side. As an overall trend the intelligence permeates the LCD, which means the intelligence and the actor is not the human anymore – but the software behind it. In many cases today already, software is the better ‘driver’ for content than humans, it is cheaper, never sleeps, does not make mistakes, and if programmed correctly is bias free."

Progress Report - IBM Alliances Insights - Deep Plans, now it is execution time - by @holgermu
"On the concern side, IBM now needs to execute on these plans, without falling back to traditional ‘professional services’ roots and deliver the more IP based, productized offerings. IBM has the DNA, resources and people to do that, but they need to come together at the right time. The Rubicon that the services business has to cross is not to only leverage existing product commitments from a services perspective, but to create lasting IP or even product offerings that create a flywheel effect between its services and these new products."

News Analysis - Workday, IBM Form Strategic Partnership on the IBM Cloud - The IaaS vendor race for SaaS load is on
"MyPOV – Describes well what is going – Workday ‘has adopted’ IBM Cloud (likely SoftLayer) but will become the foundation for Workday’s development and test environments. Development and test environments are usually of less interest to SaaS customers, but the cost of providing, provisioning and maintaining them is a large chunk of CAPEX for any ISV / SaaS provider."

Market Move - Randstad to acquire Monster Worldwide - Bridges a moat, now it has to work - by @holgermu
"This is an interesting move and may give the executives at Adecco, Kelly Services, Manpower, Robert Half and more some food for thought. If Randstad can become more strategic for HR decision makers and enterprises overall, then all will have to react. In the meantime, they may sit on the sideline and hope Randstad may get distracted and may not deliver, but that’s a risky strategy. There are enough Monster competitors with similar structural market challenges – their valuation maybe on the rise."

Breaking with the best practice of using standard software and starting to build you own next generation applications is a major internal transformation."

Market Move - Oracle acquires NetSuite - Oddly consolidation means more options for customers - by @holgermu
"This is likely not going to affect Oracle Cloud customers. Oracle has been a serial acquirer, the company knows how to do acquisitions, though this is the 2nd largest acquisition Oracle has done. And NetSuite has more overlap with many Oracle products than Peoplesoft had – e.g. NetSuite brings working CRM and Manufacturing applications to Oracle (something Peoplesoft did to a lesser extend). So Oracle will have to be very clear on where it sees the sweet spot for either product and what customers can expect to use depending on their size and use case"

Global HR Matters - How to get there - Part 1 - Why global is challenging, but critically important - by @holgermu
"On the software side, Global HR software on the contrary though, does exist, but as one can imagine it is a challenge to create and even more to maintain this kind of software. For an HR software vendor to be in the ‘Global HR’ system business, the vendor needs to understand the local content, the legislation and best practices that govern each of the countries the vendors wants to support."
