Planning a Digital Transformation: Perspectives from the User Community
"We’re still not using the system: One of the most common measures for success versus failure is system work arounds. If a majority or even reasonable percentage of people are still using old processes or creating their own spreadsheets, this is an indication of a lack of change management. There needs to be measures in place to test new processes and system adoption, as well as proper communication, training and alignment from the start."

Oracle Cloud ERP: The Sleeping Giant?
"While nearly ever ERP vendor in the market is promoting “cloud” offerings to the point of exertion, many of the industry leaders including SAP S/4HANA and Microsoft Dynamics 365 are still struggling to migrate their full legacy functionality to the cloud. Oracle is no different in working to bring E-Business Suite capability into its cloud offering. However, where Oracle is stepping up their game is in the development and integration of emerging technologies into their ERP offering."

Your Business Blueprint Should Dictate Your SAP S/4HANA Implementation – Not the Other Way Around
"If you talk to a sales rep from SAP or a system integrator such as Deloitte, Accenture, or Capgemini, they will tell you the opposite. They will say that SAP “best practices” should define your business and that your people should just change to adopt to software functionality. They will also push you to implement SAP as quickly as possible – not because it’s best for your business, but because it’s best for SAP and the system integrator."

Risks of Microsoft Dynamics 365 System Integrators
"Choosing a technical system integrator is an important decision for any digital transformation. But the risks of Microsoft Dynamics 365 system integrators are even greater than for other ERP solutions.

While SAP, Oracle, and other ERP vendors have tightly controlled their ecosystems, Microsoft Dynamics has traditionally taken a hands-off approach to their system integrators. This has led to a high degree of variation in the market and almost too many options to choose from. This can make it difficult for many organizations to select the best Dynamics 365 system integrator."

How to Avoid Losing Control of Your SAP S/4HANA Transformation
"One of the biggest mistakes is to hand complete control of the project over to your system integrator. Yes, they probably have a deeper competency in SAP than your team does, but you need to be the one to manage their resources, expectations, and deliverables. They should report to your project team rather than managing the overall project. And if things aren’t working out and can’t be remediated, don’t be afraid to fire your SAP system integrator."

How Edge Computing Will Deliver on the Promise of 5G
"That’s because it’s not meant for us. Like most technological advancements, industry will come first. The promise of 5G is in swarms of drones and fleets of autonomous vehicles. It’s in lightweight industrial wearables that process crucial information rapidly. It’s in robots. And, yes, it’s in the augmented reality game we’ve all been waiting for, “Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.”

This promise of 5G will be most likely delivered on the edge, taking it from conference marketing to real-world feasibility. In fact, 4G can already deliver a 5G-like experience with edge computing."

Google and IBM still trying desperately to move cloud market-share needle | TechCrunch
While becoming cross-platform compatible isn’t exactly a radical notion in general, it most certainly is for a company like IBM, which if it had its druthers and a bit more market share, would probably have been content to maintain the status quo. But if the majority of your customers are pursuing a multi-cloud strategy, it might be a good idea for you to jump on the bandwagon — and that’s precisely what IBM has done by opening up access to Watson across clouds in this fashion.

Clorox Successfully Implements a Program for Value Chain Segmentation
By piloting this approach with several businesses, General Managers began to understand the trade-offs such as “If you focus on speed, cost will be good, but likely not industry best.” A powerful part of the process is the trade-offs conversation to establish the predominant capability needed. We used the diagram in Figure 5 to illustrate the trade-offs with the leadership teams."

How WhatsApp Destroyed A Village
"The Indian government, however, had been hoping for more: It had asked for WhatsApp to develop tools to help trace the origin of messages, ostensibly to help authorities hunt down the creators of the fake videos.

Carl Woog, a spokesperson for WhatsApp, provided the following statement to BuzzFeed News: “We believe that building ‘traceability’ into WhatsApp would undermine end-to-end encryption and the private nature of WhatsApp creating the potential for serious misuse. As we go forward, WhatsApp remains committed to working with others in society on the challenge of misinformation though we will not weaken the privacy protections we provide.”

What I Look For When Reviewing Web Sites - by @barnes_hank
"What makes you special: This is about differentiation. Being clear about what sets you apart from competition (and, hint, it’s not your people) is critical. You have create contrasts that lay the groundwork for preference. What do I normally see? No comparisons, no terminology that starts to connect to differentiation. Or, vague statements of differentiation (like the people claim) that are made with no context of what the comparison is."

Bold Claims in Oracle’s FY18 Q2 Earnings - via @UpperEdge
"Customers who have done their preparation and have developed a sound negotiation strategy and approach will have significant leverage in negotiations with Oracle — not only buying Cloud subscriptions, but also on a more robust deal that may include on-premise software, hardware, and even services and training components. Oracle will be prepared to negotiate if customers know what to ask for and are not fearful of an audit because they have conducted the necessary due diligence to be confident they are in compliance."

Lassoing S&OP - by @lcecere
"A common mistake by business leaders is thinking that they know what good looks like. The research that I have done recently dramatically challenges my 1990’s paradigms. (When companies hire from outside, they will attract talent from many companies. Each defining S&OP differently. As a result, when they sit around the table to discuss the process without detail, they will spin. Each thinks they know what S&OP should look like, but the discussions need to be facilitated to drive alignment.)"

VTech: A Story of a Supply Chain Leader - by @lcecere
"So, getting back to the story, at the time, there were at least three different forecasts (sales/financial/production) and none were the same, and how would they be reconciled? Legacy technology applications were completely unaligned. I asked, how do we align these? We realized that there was a need for a single trigger. Point of sale data needed to drive all processes. If you knew what the retailer was going to sell (POS) then the calculation as to what the retailer would buy was a simple mathematical calculation. The way that we got there, was to abandon the push forecast for pull demand and replenish what the retailer wants to sell. We went from push planning to pull-based demand planning over the course of a year."

S&OP: Five Steps to Get Started - by @lcecere
"One of his dilemmas, within his organization, was the definition of the S&OP time horizon. The company had a strong manufacturing culture, and the focus was on the urgent. The S&OP process was currently owned by manufacturing leadership, and the focus was on a short-term duration of one-three months. We discussed the need for manufacturing leadership to cede ownership to the business and the organizational need to focus on S&OP as a tactical process from one-to-twelve months to drive the greatest business benefit."

How Can We Heal the Global Supply Chain? - by @lcecere
"As I travel the world, many companies struggle to understand what I do. For many who I meet in my global travels, the industry analyst role is a new concept. It is not a globally recognized role. As a result, at conferences I am often introduced as a consultant. When this happens I quickly dismiss the categorization. I explain that a consultant is sure that they know what drives supply chain excellence while I, on the other hand, am not so sure."

"Amazon provides a powerful example of how companies should approach their innovation portfolios. What aids Amazon in this case is a clear mission, a sense of what they want to accomplish and a CEO who continually acts on it."

S&OP: A Tough Nut to Crack - by @lcecere
"Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) is over thirty years old. I have been studying it as a researcher for fifteen years. With the rise of the global multi-national, S&OP increased in importance as a way to align and drive organizational balance. Companies struggle to do it well."

"Our research into the technology buying cycle continues to highlight how important buyers view influencers at all stage of their buying process. Whether an influencer comes from academia, the analyst community, associations, government, or the blogosphere, if customers trust them, then they highly value their advise and insight (Gartner clients-check out research that published recently “Tech Go-to-Market: Trust Drives the B2B Technology Buying Cycle“). How can sellers respect the buying process, but still meet their objectives? Waiting for buyers to contact you, particularly if you work for a brand that is not well known, is a recipe for failure.
