Tech Goes to Washington - by @benthompson #facebook #google
"Still, Kennedy’s two lines of questions combined revealed the tech companies’ testimony for the paradox it was: on the one hand, their sheer scale means it is impossible to fully stamp out activities like Russian meddling; on the other, that same scale means they all have the most intimate information on nearly everyone."

Twitter’s stock plunges as user growth stalls
"That's not going to happen, and investors are cluing in. Twitter had 328 million average monthly active users, or MAU, in the three months ending in June, which is unchanged from the previous quarter. The company's shares were down more than 10 percent this morning on the news.

The poor showing comes despite Twitter's role in the daily news cycle being more prominent than ever, since the platform often serves as President Donald Trump's favored medium of expression."

A scary future for Twitter users - by @jbernoff
"Salesforce and Disney have given up on acquiring Twitter, citing its troll problems. To succeed in tech you need either profits or growth; Twitter has neither. So somebody’s going to buy it that doesn’t care about the users. As a result, if you’re a user, you can expect a very scary future — scarier than any ghosts you’ll see this Halloween."

Musings - Quo vadis Twitter? Who could, should buy Twitter - and what is Twitter really? - by @holgermu
"It is fascinating to see Twitter grow to its current usage level and still struggle with monetization, turning to a profit. There are many assets inside of Twitter that can be of value for an acquirer – but they are all not easy to unlock, leverage. To me Google makes the most sense – but not sure if the vendor has the appetite to such a large investment."

Salesforce, Google, Microsoft, Verizon are all eyeing up a Twitter bid - by @ron_miller
" Twitter continues to inch its way to a sale process, and the latest developments come in the form of alleged bids from potential buyers. Today CNBC is reporting, and we have also independently heard, that both Google and Salesforce are interested in buying the company. We have additionally heard that Microsoft and Verizon have also been knocking"

Requiem for Tay: Microsoft’s AI Bot Gone Bad
"Just days after Google artificial intelligence-based DeepMind technology defeated the world’s Go Champion, an experimental Microsoft AI-based chatbot was out-gamed by goofballs on Twitter, who sent the bot swirling off into an inflammatory rants."

Learning from Twitter's Decline
"Whatever statistical or financial report you choose to read, it's a sobering lesson for those creating new technology. An analysis of Twitter so far can provide something of a cautionary tales for those working in new media, wearables, IoT or any of the new technologies that are currently being developed. It demonstrates the importance of nurturing not only your product but also the ecosystem that surrounds it. "

Social Media Made the Arab Spring, But Couldn’t Save It
"The darkness has fallen. Half a decade later, the Middle East is roiling in violence and repression. Activists are being intimidated into restraint by governments that are, with the exception of Tunisia, more totalitarian than those they replaced, if any government as such really exists at all."

Here’s what long tweets will do for Twitter: nothing
"Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey suggested that he might allow long tweets — up to 10,000 characters. That’s fixing a bug, not fixing Twitter. It won’t change much. Twitter has limited Tweets to 140 characters since the start, a limit that arose out of length restrictions on text messages."

So Long Blogging. Hello—Yep, We’re Going to Say It—Plogging
"Last week, Facebook updated its little-known Notes feature to encourage users to write “more beautiful and customizable” posts separate from status updates. Medium announced a $57 million round of funding (on Medium, of course) and is holding a VIP event next week to reveal new features. Everyone’s favorite unicorn Slack relaunched its Posts feature to help users write longer at work. And Re/code reports that Twitter is building a product to allow users to share posts longer than the typical 140-character limit."

Twitter’s Quest to Be the Way We Yell at Customer Service
"Twitter had a great opportunity to build out customer-service tools for businesses and consumers. But it didn’t move quickly enough."

Twitter Needs New Leadership - by @monkbent
"This isn’t a surprise: Business Insider reported last year that Twitter likely had 697 million abandoned accounts (and that number, presuming it is correct, has certainly grown). The problem is that those 697 million users, having already decided that Twitter isn’t a useful service for them, are much less likely to even experience things like the new logged-out page or instant timeline, even though Twitter @-handles and hashtags continues to be plastered all over TV and the web."

Twitter and What Might Have Been - hy @monkbent
"It’s interesting to ponder why it is that Twitter is able to monetize effectively – and if they can keep it up – even as they are surpassed in active users by social networks like Instagram and (soon-if-not-already) Snapchat, never mind Facebook. I made this argument at the time of Twitter’s IPO offering:"

Twitter's Latest Anti-Harassment Measures Still Don't Do The Trick
"Twitter has taken some additional steps to help users deal with online harassment, it announced Thursday. Too bad they still fall well short of what's needed."
