ACS Advocates a Consensus Strategy to Prevent Injury, Disability, and Death from Firearms
The ACS COT’s Consensus Strategy views firearm injury and mortality in the larger context of violence toward oneself or others, which is a major cause of unnecessary injury and death in the United States, claiming on average 175 American lives every single day.*

“To reduce death and disability associated with firearm injuries, we have to think about the strategies that cover the entire spectrum of violence-related events: how firearms are stored in the home, recognition that people who are at risk of self-harm or domestic violence should not have access to weapons, and addressing the causes of interpersonal violence. These strategies don’t get a lot of attention. These are not controversial ideas. All are achievable and could make a huge impact in terms of reducing injury, disability, and death,” said Eileen M. Bulger, MD, FACS, Seattle, Wash., current ACS COT Chair.
Violent Intentional Injuries and Deaths Are a Neglected Public Health Crisis

In 2016, the most recent year for which data are available, a firearm was involved in 51 percent (22,938) of suicides and 75 percent (14,415) of homicides. Since 1999 there has been a 17 percent increase in firearm-related intentional injury death rates; over the same time period, there was a 22 percent decrease in traffic-related deaths.*

Since 2014, the ACS COT has been engaged in a firearm-injury prevention consensus-building project that involved surveys of its members and the ACS Board of Regents and Board of Governors, town hall meetings, and outreach to a broad group of stakeholder organizations.

Mass shootings: why do authorities keep missing the warning signs? | US news | The Guardian
behavioral experts know the basic psychological profile common to almost all mass shooters of the post-Columbine type, whether they claim to be swayed by white supremacy, radical Islamism, another ideology, or no ideology at all: they tend to be loners, with perilously low self-esteem and poor or non-existent family relations, and they are looking for a way to validate themselves and take revenge on a world they blame for their troubles.

CDC Ban on Gun Research Caused Lasting Damage - ABC News
The CDC conducted gun violence research in the 1980s and 1990s, but it abruptly ended in 1996 when the National Rifle Association lobbied Congress to cut the CDC's budget the exact amount it had allocated to gun violence research.

"It's worth pointing out that the language never specifically forbade the CDC from conducting the research," Wintemute said.

The 1997 appropriations bill stated, "None of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to advocate or promote gun control." Congress also threatened more funding cuts if the gun research continued.

"The message was really clear," Wintemute said.

After Newtown, does the US really want tougher gun control laws? | Comment is free | The Guardian
@hermionegingold - It seems to me that the way forward is to have no truck with this vague "right to defend yourself personally with a deadly weapon" crap, and instead insist on a proper implementation of the second amendment ["A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."].

Anyone that wants to have a gun will also have to be a member of a militia. The training requirements of these militias can be racked up over time, and gun ownership will naturally wane as a consequence. Add in a psychological screening process to regulate entry to and continued membership of the militia. Problem solved.

You're welcome.

Guns really do change the way you think | MNN - Mother Nature Network
"This is your brain on guns"
For nearly 50 years, scientists have been studying the "weapons effect," a phenomenon in which the presence of a weapon or a picture of one can stimulate aggressive behavior.

A 1967 University of Wisconsin study revealed that subjects acted more aggressively in the presence of a gun, and in 2006 researchers found that men exposed to firearms before an experiment had higher levels of testosterone and were three times more likely to act aggressively than participants who weren't exposed to a gun.

In 2009, the University of Pennsylvania examined the link between gun possession and gun assault and found that people with firearms were 4.5 times more likely to be shot than those who didn't carry a gun.

The paper states that one possible reason for this is that "a gun may falsely empower its possessor to overreact," and there's further evidence to support this.
fake gun
In a 2012 study, participants were given either a replica of a firearm or a neutral object, such as a ball, and asked to identify objects other people were holding. Those holding the replica gun were more likely to assume others had a gun and were more likely to "engage in threat-induced behavior"

Texas pro-gun group recreates Charlie Hebdo attack - NY Daily News
A Texas pro-gun group organized a re-enactment of the Charlie Hebdo massacre in a bizarre bid to test what would have happened if one of the murdered scribes was armed.

But the experiment set up by the group The Truth About Guns backfired — in no scenario was the “armed civilian” able to take out both “terrorists.”

Perhaps even more disappointing for the pro-gun activists, only one of the volunteers playing the role of the armed civilian even managed to survive — by fleeing the scene.

Florida toddler fatally shoots himself with father's gun while parents load car | US news | The Guardian
Kaleb, alone in the car, crawled across the seat and found the gun that was stored in the glove compartment, sheriff Bob Gualtieri of the Pinellas County sheriff’s office said during a Wednesday evening press conference.

Kaleb then grabbed the gun, turned the barrel toward his chest, and squeezed the trigger, Gualtieri said.

Woman at Walmart Is Accidentally Shot Dead by 2-Year-Old Son - NYTimes.com
shortly before 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday, as the store video cameras recorded the scene, the little boy found a gun in his mother’s purse and it discharged once at near point-blank range from where she stood, less than arm’s length away, said Lt. Stu Miller, a spokesman for the Kootenai County sheriff’s office. She died at the scene, he said, her death appearing to be accidental.

“He probably still doesn’t even know what has happened,” Lieutenant Miller said of the boy.
