How to Digitally Sign a File in Linux using GnuPg (Digital Signatures)
As many organizations move away from paper documents to digital documents, digital signatures are required to manage any sensitive digital documents. Digital signatures can be used to authenticate the source of the message, such that the receiver can decide whether to trust the sender or not. Now-a-days it is most widely used for software distribution and financial transactions.

In public key cryptography, it is possible to use a private key to sign a file. Anyone who has the corresponding public key can check whether the file was signed by the private key. Anyone who doesn’t have the private key cannot forge such a signature.

Digital signatures can be used for sender authentication and non-repudiation. The signer can’t claim that they didn’t sign the document.

Working with PDF files on Linux
PDF documents which have been digitally signed with a security certificate are legally enforceable in many countries. This is very important in the medical field as it ensures that a patients medical documentation has not been altered since the doctor or consultant signed them.

In the clinic letters system I’ve developed (Open ALMA) I introduced a work flow allowing consultants to digitally sign clinic letters before being sent back to the GP. The final letter is rendered as a PDF file using the LaTeX publishing system. The publishing of these PDF files is done on a Linux server. Therefore, I needed to find a Linux command line utility which could sign each PDF file with a unique security certificate identifying the person who reviewed and signed the content.

I settled on using PortableSigner which is a Java application distributed under a free European Union Public Licence. What I like about PortableSigner, beside the fact it can be invoked from the command line, is that you can embed a comment, a reason and a location during the PDF signing process. The location field can be used to store the computers host name or IP address thus documenting which terminal the signer was sat at while signing the letter.

Bottom Bracket Basics - Velo Orange
BB threading
Let us begin with the French standard because this is, after all, Velo Orange. The French decided that BB shells should be 68mm wide, threading should be35mm x 1mm, and both cups should tighten to the right. Simple and effective! Of course, VO makes French Bottom Brackets.

The Swiss, improved the French standard by reversing the thread on the drive side. This became the Swiss standard and was adopted not only by Swiss manufacturers but also by a few French companies, notably Motobecane. (Motobecane also used French threading on occasion and later switched to British threading; good luck.) The BB shell is 68mm wide and also threaded 35mm X 1mm; but the left cup tightens to the right and the right to the left.

The reason for this improved standard was that the spinning of the crank was thought to loosen the right-hand thread non-drive BB cups. After a few decades, the Swiss noticed that French cyclists, in fact, were not stopping every few miles to tighten their cups. And so the standard was quietly abandoned. The only Swiss threaded BBs made today are the super expensive Phil Wood units. But VO does have a Threadless BB that is a less expensive alternative.

The French standard was also eventually abandoned and, to the everlasting annoyance of the French and of francophiles everywhere, the British/English (or ISO) standard became the world standard. If your classic frame was made in America, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, or Britain, it almost certainly accepts a English threaded BB. This standard is 1.375" X 24 tpi with the left cup tightening to the right and the right to the left; the BB shell is 68mm wide. All VO frames use an English Threaded BB.

Not leaving well enough alone, some British manufacturers, particularly Raleigh, came up with other standards that are outside of my understanding, as did some old American manufacturers.

Finally the Italians, who we reluctantly acknowledge do know something about bicycles, if only the racing sort, blithely ignored everyone else and stuck to their own standard. The Italian BB shell is 70mm wide and has 36 mm X 24 tpi threading; both cups tighten to the right. VO makes Italian Threaded BBs in sizes to fit our cranks.

Any experience of threadless bottom brackets ? - Google Groups
What I would do in this stripped-thread situation, to squeeze more
use out of the bike, is this: I'd clean all the grease out of the
bottom bracket and finish with an alcohol scrubbing. Then, I'd apply
some metal-mending epoxy putty (JB-Weld is good) to the threads, before
installing the inner parts. This would cause a permanent lock, so you
couldn't adjust the bearing cups or add grease later. I'd use the
standard putty, not the quick-set type, so I could properly set the
adjustable cup, before it hardened.
If only the right-side fixed cup is stripped, I'd use putty on it only
and the left-side cup could still be adjusted. Grease would need to be
added to the bearing cups, but kept out of their epoxied threads during

Steel bicycle frame repairs
Bottom-bracket threads stripped?

This problem is most likely to occur when working on the bicycle and is much more likely with an aluminum-alloy frame than a steel one. The classic repair is to rethread the bottom-bracket shell to the Italian dimensional standard -- 1 mm larger in diameter than the others -- but this requires professional bike-shop tools and Italian-standard bottom-bracket parts. Some bottom-bracket shells do not have thick enough walls to allow the rethreading. A Velo Orange threadless bottom bracket offers another solution. If only one side is stripped, you could secure the bottom-bracket cup on that side with plastic steel -- same removal issue as with the headset locknut, only worse.

Basic Thread Concepts | Park Tool
There is resistance to turning the bolt, as the fastener gets tighter. Some resistance comes from friction and rubbing between the internal and external thread surfaces. Because of this, it is common to prepare the threads with lubrication. This can take for form of liquid lubrication, grease, or an anti-seize compound. Even liquid threadlockers provide some lubrication during tightening. As a simple rule of thumb, if the thread size is small, such as a derailleur pinch bolt, a liquid lubricant is adequate. If the thread is large or the torque relatively high, such as a pedal thread or bottom bracket, use a grease or anti-seize compound. There are situations, however, where a manufacturer may recommend no lubrication on the fastener. If is useful to lubricate the threads and under the head of the bolt, especially when the bolt head is turned during tightening.

Bottom Bracket Service: Cartridge Type | Park Tool
Begin by preparing the threads of the bottom bracket. A thread locker may be used when the frame shell is steel and the cups are either aluminum or steel lockrings. A mild thread locking compound such as Loctite® #242 that is considered “service removable” is preferred. This means that the parts are removable with normal tools, without taking extreme measures. If no thread locking compound is available, grease threads heavily or ASC-1 Anti Seize Compound. For more on thread preparation see Basic Thread Concepts.

Tool Tips--Installing a Cartridge Bottom Bracket
Velo Orange sells a clever cartridge bottom bracket with expanding sleeves that press against the inside of a bottom bracket shell with damaged threads. This cartridge will work with all common threading standards except Italian, whose threads have a larger diameter than the others. A shim of 0.5 mm or .020 inch steel will probably adapt this cartridge to with an Italian shell. The bottom-bracket shell should be between 68 and 71 mm wide. Some Raleigh bicycles and mountain bikes have a wider bottom bracket shell; the expanders unfortunately can't be extended far enough apart to work with these.

Shimano Road Bike Headsets - the Buyer's Guide, 2015
The 105SC headset is made using steel pieces and an aluminum alloy head lock nut. The head lock nut is silver cast aluminum which is then threaded, with a snap in plastic stem seal. The upper race is cast and threaded steel with a recess for the stamped, silver colored, steel head key washer to make the headset loosening up more difficult. Shimano gives the bearing cups their silver color by enclosing the cup in silver colored plastic. The upper cone race is cast steel with a ground bearing surface that is then painted Black. The fork crown race is cast steel with a ground bearing surface. The 105SC has snap in dust seals located under the bearing cups to protect the bearings against contamination. The two steel bearing retainers each have twenty 4mm ball bearings. This Road Racing headset is made in the 1" size only, has a weight of 116.5 grams, with a stack height of 32.7mm and uses a 32mm headset wrench to tighten both the upper cup and head lock nut.

Hilary Stone Campagnolo Headsets
Stack Height An important consideration with choosing a headset is to ensure that your new headset has a stack height the same or less than your current headset. Before removing the headset measure from the bottom of the fork crown race to the the top of the lower head race where it fits into the head tube. Secondly measure the height from the lowest part of the top frame race to the top of the lock nut. Add the two dimensions you have measured together and that is the stack height of your current headset.Your new headset must not have a stack larger than the old one.
For a frame without a fitted headset measure the length of the head tube (A). Then measure the length of the fork steeer tube from the base of the crown race seat to the top the column (B). Subtract A from B and that is the maximum stack height headset you can use – you can use a headset with a smaller stack height.

Fork Crown Race Seat Diameter and Head tube Insert Race Diameter Campagnolo settled on a standard crown race seat diameter of 26.4mm with an insert race diameter of 30.2mm. Japan with the JIS standard settled upon 27.0mm crown race seat diameter with an insert race diameter of 30.0mm which was virtually identical to that used for the most part in the UK prior to about 1975 unless a Campag headset was fitted. However most frames from the last thirty years use the Campagnolo standard and even the Japanese manufacturers mostly made headsets to the Campag dimensions. If your frame and fork has JIS dimensions it can easily be reamed and cut to accept Campag dimensioned headsets by a good bike shop or framebuider.

Sheldon Brown's Bicycle Glossary St - Sz
The stack height is the vertical space taken up by the headset. With a conventional threaded fork, the steerer tube is longer than the head tube by some amount. If a headset is chosen with a stack height greater than this difference, there may not be enough of the steerer free above the upper bearing race for the keyed washer and lock nut to be installed. In the case of threadless headsets, the stack height also includes the height of the part of the handlebar stem that clamps to the steerer.

Saddle Height and Cadence Effects on the Physiological, Perceptual, and Affective Responses of Recreational Cyclists - Alberto B. Kruschewsky, Rodolfo A. Dellagrana, Mateus Rossato, Luiz Fernando P. Ribeiro, Caetano D. Lazzari, Fernando Diefenthaeler, 201
Saddle height influences cycling performance and would be expected to influence cyclists physically, perceptually, and emotionally. We investigated how different saddle positions and cadences might affect cyclists’ torque, heart rate, rate of perceived exertion (RPE), and affective responses (Feeling scale). Nine male recreational cyclists underwent cycling sessions on different days under different conditions with a constant load. On Day 1, the saddle was at the reference position (109% of the distance from the pubic symphysis to the ground), and on Days 2 and 3, the saddle was in the “upward position” (reference + 2.5%) and “downward position” (reference − 2.5%) in random order. Each session lasted 30 minutes and was divided into three cadence-varied 10-minute stages without interruption: (a) freely chosen cadence (FCC), (b) FCC − 20%, and (c) FCC + 20%. We assessed all dependent measures at the end of each 10 minute stage. While there was no significant interaction (Saddle × Cadence) for any of the analyzed variables, torque values were higher at lower cadences in all saddle configurations, and the FCC + 20% cadence was associated with faster heart rate, higher RPE, and lower affect compared with FCC and FCC − 20% in all saddle positions. At all cadences, the saddle at “downward position” generated a higher RPE compared with “reference position” and “upward position.” The affective response was lower in the “downward position” compared with the “reference position.” Thus, while cyclists perceived the downward (versus reference) saddle position as greater exercise effort, they also associated it with unpleasant affect.

The Prime Machine – a new concordancer in town – EFL Notes
One of the impulses behind The Prime Machine was to help students distinguish similar or synonymous words. Recently a student of mine asked about the difference between “occasion” and “opportunity”. I used the compare function on the BYU COCA to help the student induce some meaning from the listed collocations. It kinda, sorta, helped.

The features offered by The Prime Machine promises much better help for this kind of question. For example in the screenshot below the (Neighbourhood) Label function shows the kind of semantic tags associated with the words “occasion” and “opportunity”. Having this info certainly helps reduce time figuring out the differences between the words.

A New Year's Resolution to Commit to Bike Monogamy | Outside Online
Do I manage to ride all these bikes? Sure. But I also probably lose like two weeks worth of riding time a year to fleet maintenance alone, and that's reason enough to simplify my cycling lifestyle.

Of course, making the decision to ride just one bike for a whole year is easy. The hard part is deciding which one it’s gonna be. It has to be one you can ride on and off road, and be reasonably enjoyable in either scenario. And while that might seem to imply some sort of cyclocross bike, the truth about bikes like that is that they're really best for one thing—cyclocross. Oh sure, you can ride your cross bike on mountain bike trails, but it's kind of like cleaning your toilet bowl with a toothbrush.

No, what I need is a bike that can really go anywhere, and to that end I've decided to go with my rigid, 27.5+ mountain bike. It's steel, it’s capable, and it carried a retail price of under $1,000. Not only can it handle pretty much anything, but now that I've fitted it with some Jones H-Bars it's comfortable for longer, non-technical rides, too.

Translator Tools / TransTools for Word / Reference / Document Cleaner
Document Cleaner is a collection of tools for preparation of badly formatted documents for translation.

We all have to translate badly formatted documents. These can be produced by OCR and PDF conversion software such as ABBYY Finereader, ABBYY PDF Transformer, Nuance Omnipage, etc., or by inexperienced users of word processing software. Incorrect formatting causes many problems in translation, including:

Excessive tags in your CAT tool. These tags may be caused by hard-to-see changes in text formatting, excessive bookmarks, unnecessary text backgrounds, etc.
Inability to see all text after translation. This usually occurs in tables, frames or textboxes.
Difficulties in further editing, translation or formatting. OCR and PDF conversion tools use a lot of special formatting tricks to ensure that the Word document resembles the original PDF document or scanned image. Some of this special formatting makes it incredibly difficult to edit the document: for instance, the document layout may “fall apart” as soon as the text expands or shrinks during translation.

How Document Cleaner can help you

Document Cleaner provides several tools to help you process badly formatted Word documents:

But like Karpathy's system, its recursive character means that it's capable of turning meaningless input into complex and seemingly unpredictable hallucinations that nevertheless evoke aspects of its experience.

An introduction to Mastodon |
It solves the ownership problem in both the literal and emotional sense: the code, being open source (AGPL), is owned by everyone, and the nodes themselves are so numerous that users can shop around to find a community that best suits them, or start a personal node.

Each node, being independently run and managed, can be used as a private node, or it can be open to other users, it can block users or feeds, or it can accept feeds. Control is truly placed in the hands of the users, and yet the end result is a truly social network.

Mastodon is one implementation of GNU Social focusing on a good, clean user interface and a low barrier-to-entry for self-hosting.

And it's spreading like wildfire as the premier Twitter alternative.

Yes, this is us. – LineageOS – LineageOS Android Distribution
You’ve probably read the news articles today. If you haven’t, please see the following: archived version

So, yes, this is us. LineageOS will be a continuation of what CyanogenMod was. To quote Andy Rubin, this is the definition of open. A company pulling their support out of an open source project does not mean it has to die.

My /boot partition is nearly full and I get a warning every time I reboot my system. I already deleted old kernel packages (linux-headers...), actually I did that to install a newer kernel version that came with the automatic updates. After installing that new version, the partition is nearly full again. So what else can I delete? Are there some other files associated to the old kernel images?

How Scientists Can Protect Their Data From the Trump Administration
To get started, you need to install a BitTorrent client. There are many options, and I like Transmission because it’s open source and minimalist, but you can use whichever one you like best — the instructions are similar no matter what client you use.

Open Transmission, and click File > Create Torrent File. Then browse your disk until you find the data you’d like to share (for this example, I’m sharing a folder with over 5 gigabytes of climate data that I downloaded from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). Then you’ll need to cut and paste some trackers, which are odd-looking URLs that help facilitate peers finding one another in a swarm. There are many public trackers out there, but I’m using the ones suggested by OpenBitTorrent to paste into the trackers box.

PythonEffectTutorial - Inkscape Wiki
Effect extensions in Inkscape means a simple programs or scripts that reads an SVG file from standard input, transforms it somehow and prints it to the standard output. Usually Inkscape sits on both ends, providing the file with some parameters as input first and finally reading the output, which is then used for further work.

Mimsy: Write an Inkscape extension: create multiple duplicates
That’s a little tedious, though, and, because I’m easily distracted, prone to error.1 I decided to look into making an Inkscape extension to do what I wanted.

Inkscape extensions consist of two parts: a configuration file that defines how and where the extension appears in the GUI, and a script file that does whatever the extension is supposed to do.

The configuration file is a simple XML file. It needs to end in .inx and it needs to go in your personal extensions directory. The example says “~/.inkscape/extensions” but it looks like this has changed, in Inkscape .47, to “~/.config/inkscape/extensions/”.

Aegisub • View topic - How to create a video with built-in subs from a .mp3?
[this doesn't actually work, but it was still deeply helpful]
Re: How to create a video with built-in subs from a .mp3?

Unread postby Amaya » Wed Oct 23, 2013 2:08 pm
A little late, but since I had to work on something similar just a while ago there is another solution using fmpeg that I'd like to share:

Choose/create a picture of whatever you want as background in the final resolution of your video (e.g. 1280x720) and type something like this in your console (or create a batch file, whatever you prefer):

Code: Select all
ffmpeg.exe -y -loop 1 -r 24000/1001 -i input_image.jpg -i input_music.mp3 -acodec copy -shortest output_video.mp4

Of course you can adapt this to whatever output you want (e.g. -r 24000/1001 sets fps to 23.976, but you can choose -r 25 as well, or you want not only to copy the music but use another codec, in this case you might use -acodec aac, or you might want to get an avi, then just name the outoutfile whatever.avi . Well, you get the idea: read ffmpeg manual for the settings)

Air Quality Sensor: Series 500 Portable Air Monitor
The Series 500 air quality sensor enables accurate real-time surveying of common outdoor air pollutants, all in an ultra portable handheld monitor. Air quality professionals typically use the Series 500 for short term air quality studies and carrying out checks on pollution “hot spots”. The Series 500 can also be deployed for short term fixed monitoring by adding an optional outdoor enclosure.

Data is stored on board the Series 500 with a maximum 8,188 records available. To download the data a USB cable is supplied for connection to PC. Free PC software provided with the Series 500 takes the data and presents it in a chart or table view. Data can be downloaded and viewed in Excel.

Like all our handheld monitors the Series 500 portable air quality sensor takes advantage of the unique sensor head format. Sensors are housed within an interchangeable cartridge (“head”) that attaches to the monitor base. The head can be removed and replaced in seconds, allowing users to measure as many gases as they wish. Sensor heads feature active fan sampling which ensures a representative sample is taken and therefore increases measurement accuracy.

Other features on the Series 500 include monitor ID and location ID. Monitor ID identifies the monitor uniquely and ensures that all data from it are tied to that monitor. Location ID can be used to tag measurements to a specific location which is helpful when sampling at a number of sites over the course of a day or week.

Panopticlick | About
Setting your browser to unblock ads from websites that commit to respecting Do Not Track rewards companies that are respecting user privacy, incentivizing more companies to respect Do Not Track in order to have their ads shown at all. By preserving privacy-friendly ads, sites that rely on advertising funding can continue to thrive without adjusting their core business model, even as they respect users’ privacy choices.

Over time, we believe we can shift the norms on the Web to ensure privacy and respect for users comes first. But that can only happen if online advertisers are incentivized to respect user choices.

You can help us by installing EFF’s Privacy Badger.
Is it possible to defend against browser fingerprinting?

Browser fingerprinting is quite a powerful method of tracking users around the Internet. There are some defensive measures that can be taken with existing browsers, but none of them are ideal. In practice, the most realistic protection is using the Tor Browser, which has put a lot of effort into reducing browser fingerprintability.

The Libreboot C201 from Minifree is really really really ridiculously open source | TechCrunch
Open source laptops — ones not running any commercial software whatsoever — have been the holy grail for free software fans for years. Now, with the introduction of libreboot, a truly open source boot firmware, the dream is close to fruition.

The $730 laptop is a bog standard piece of hardware but it contains only open source software. The OS, Debian, is completely open source; to avoid closed software the company has added an Atheros Wi-Fi dongle with open source drivers rather than use the built-in Wi-Fi chip.

Open source is not just fun, it’s also wildly important. While Linux on the desktop is still years away, Debian is already fully featured and fun to use and the Libreboot project goes the last mile by ensuring everything is open source from boot time to shutdown.

The laptop itself simply runs a quad-core 1.8GHz ARM CPU (Rockchip RK3288) and has 4GB RAM with 16GB built-in eMMC storage. You can add more storage with a microSD card. It has an 11-inch screen and a three-year warranty.

I'm giving up on PGP
All in all, I should be the perfect user for PGP. Competent, enthusiast, embedded in a similar community.

But it just didn't work.

First, there's the adoption issue others talked about extensively. I get at most 2 encrypted emails a year.

Then, there's the UX problem. Easy crippling mistakes. Messy keyserver listings from years ago. "I can't read this email on my phone". "Or on the laptop, I left the keys I never use on the other machine".

But the real issues I realized are more subtle. I never felt confident in the security of my long term keys. The more time passed, the more I would feel uneasy about any specific key. Yubikeys would get exposed to hotel rooms. Offline keys would sit in a far away drawer or safe. Vulnerabilities would be announced. USB devices would get plugged in.

A long term key is as secure as the minimum common denominator of your security practices over its lifetime. It's the weak link.

What you’re aiming to do here is cover all the hard plastic surface inside the box with the sound-absorbent foam. We did it by cutting out a piece to line the bottom first, then two longer strips for the sides.

And the recordings at the beginning of this post were done directly via, where you can record and store up to two hours free or — and this is kind of awesome — you can record and download unlimited sounds. (And in fact, the first time I recorded in the box, my Henry V voice was just way, way too loud and I had to tone it back a couple clicks.)

Why does Twitter reject my updates for exceeding 140 characters, when I know they have fewer than 140 characters?
Twitter automatically re-shortens all links with their shortener, whether you want it or not. They also automatically convert all hashtags (#hashtag), all Twitter usernames (@username) and all domain names (, and any other clickable item into links. Each of these automatically generated link takes up 23 characters instead of the actual number of text characters. Twitter performs this conversion to links and only then counts the final number of characters in the tweet text. That sometimes causes the tweet length to exceed 140 characters. They reject the tweet even if your pre-conversion text was less than 140 characters.
