Arduino Controlled Dishwasher
This is COMPLETELY cool, and exactly the sort of thing that we should be able to do with programmable tools like the Arduino. $30 Arduino + some code == $150 proprietary board.

Doctors and dentists tell patients, "all your review are belong to us"
Informative article on this issue; I've read several very general discussions about this practice, but this article really lays out what's happening, and pulls in plenty of supporting info.

Bond Market Shows Why Boehner Saying We’re Broke Is Only Figure of Speech - Bloomberg
Good overview of the real issues with debt, including a historical perspective (Hamilton). It's more complicated than both sides make it out to be, but I think that currently, the GOP is guilty of more political shenanigans re: this issue. (this may change with election results, Congressional makeup, etc.)

Trent Reznor on his Golden Globe nomination, what's wrong with the Grammys, and what it really means to be 'independent': An EW Q&A | The Music Mix | EW.com
FTA:". If you can use a search engine, you can find any piece of music that’s been recorded for free. I’m not saying that’s right but it’s a fact, and I’m surprised that more people don’t accept or acknowledge that, and try to adapt in some way."

Google Claims Orphan Books, Raising Alarm in Academia
FTA: 'While the registry’s agreement with Google is not exclusive, the registry will be allowed to license to others only the books whose authors and publishers have explicitly authorized it. Since no such authorization is possible for orphan works, only Google would have access to them, so only Google could assemble a truly comprehensive book database.

“No other company can realistically get an equivalent license,” said Pamela Samuelson, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and co-director of the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology. ' -- This is exactly where I start to get uncomfortable with it. It is indeed kind of an end run.

Facebook Connect for iPhone: Friends Now Included
Followup for blogpost - issue is that my friends and associated privacy settings in any given site don't necessarily match any other site (esp. if one is Facebook...do I care/want my middle school friends included?) FB Connect attempts to dumb down my selectivity to only their settings.
