National Public Radio's Digital Makeover
FTA: 'This is an organization that's in transformation into becoming a fully functional news content organization, not just a radio company. As part of that, we've been training our journalists to become multiplatform journalists, not only radio—not that radio is not important to our core.'

Circulation Revenue Only Thing Growing at Newspapers : CJR
This is a good 3-part article (link to part 1). I don't agree with everything Ryan is saying, but it's very much worth discussing.

PressThink: "Where's the Business Model for News, People?"
FTA: 'It’s worth going back to the first business model in reportage: the merchants, traders, and other “men of affairs” in early modern Europe who employed letter-writers in cities where the man of affairs did not happen to be located. These letters—the most famous example is the Fugger Letters from the latter 16th century—conveyed much the same news that a trader would want today: prices, conditions for trade and transport, what the local authorities were up to, rumors of war, court news and gossip, natural disasters, and anything the people were seriously buzzed about.'

Mediactive: A Users’ Guide to Media in a Networked Age.
FTA: 'My goal is to help people become active and informed users of media, as consumers and as creators. We are in a media-saturated age, more so all the time, and we need to find ways to use media to our — and our society’s — best advantage.'

Post Reporter Says It’s Not His Job to Check the Accuracy of People He’s Quoting
FTA: ' Someone tell Media Matters to get over themselves and their overblown ego of righteousness. We reported what Olympia Snowe said. That’s what she said. That’s what Republicans are saying. I really don’t know what you want of us. We are not opinion writers whose job is to play some sorta gotcha game with lawmakers.'

January Carnival of Journalism - How to support journalism online financially
FTA: 'Community funded reporting is one angle which I am bias towards and I had to get my peace out. The real answer: we don't know. I think there will be lots of splintering and every news organization will have to figure this question out for themselves. There are no more cookie cutter business models.'

Hostile Takeovers or Good Corporate Governance?
Good basic background on the Somali pirate info, if you haven't followed it. FTA: 'Piracy has its origins in the organized communities of the Puntland coast. In the 1990s, a group of fisherman in settlements there banded together to prevent illegal fishing and the dumping of toxic waste off their shores. This harmless community action inspired many analysts to designate Puntland a model for Somali civil society. When some ships illegally fishing were boarded in attempts to police the region, the reward offered for the boats return was enormous—amounts that were many times the monthly income of entire villages. Piracy took off as an attempt to gain income from this type of civic policing..."
