If you just want to remove a few path segments, then --strip-components=n or --strip=n will often do:
<code class="language-bash">
tar xvzf tgz --strip=1

unp installation and configuration in debian | http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/
You can download the script itself from https://packages.debian.org/stretch/unp; with slight modifications (about two minutes of work), you can adapt the "install" target in 'debian/rules' into a usable Makefile.

See also https://martin.ankerl.com/2006/08/11/program-e-extract-any-archive/, written in Ruby. Does not have built-in help, though.

PSTDisableGrow and the Enterprise Vault Outlook Addin 9.0.1 – Things I Learned Today
I’ve just finished working on an issue with the folks in Support, relating to PSTDisableGrow. A customer had the key set per :

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954268

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Office \ 12.0 \ Outlook \ PST
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
Type PstDisableGrow, and then press ENTER.
Right-click PstDisableGrow, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
Exit Registry Editor.

Unpack
I think this is probably *not* the utility that provides 'unp' on Ubuntu. At least not anymore.

Alternatives to tar (in Ubuntu repos)
The complete details are in the note itself, but basically the ones I've found so far are:

* dtrx
* unp
* atool

So far, I like 'unp' just fine becaues it's easy to type (one hand), it's written in Perl, and it gets the job done.

linux - How to "undo" unzip command? - Super User
use this:

unzip -l filename | awk 'BEGIN { OFS="" ; ORS="" } ; { for ( i=4; i<NF; i++ ) print $i " "; print $NF "\n" }' | xargs -I{} rm -v {}
Use this if you are skeptical (will prompt for confirmation)

unzip -l filename | awk 'BEGIN { OFS="" ; ORS="" } ; { for ( i=4; i<NF; i++ ) print $i " "; print $NF "\n" }' | xargs -I{} rm -iv {}
